Both share one vital thing in common - both companies are VERY gifted at marketing in their respective fields.
I don't think Apple really had too much of an impact on history, where there is a need for something, someone will show up to fill it... In addition, Apple computers were never good, they were always inferior to the competition and Apple's success ( which by the way began with the iMac and not with the iPod ) was due to the fact that they sold their computers as fashion ( aka clever marketing ) and it of course also helped that the Internet was becoming very popular at the time... And I think the Pope would have taken it easy and forgiven them for that little joke (overall, he forgave the guy who shot him)

If there was no Apple ][ then Visicalc would have been made on the TRS-80 or Commodore Pet (that development started prior to the Apple ][) or the SWTPC 6800 that already was on the market when the Apple I came out. As for the GUI, AT&T also took note of the Xerox Alto and gave Unix a desktop in late '84
Pretty much spot on except that the success of emergent tech in the 1980s was not (very much) due to nor did it (in any wise) vindicate so-called 'Reaganomics.' That sector's success -softened- the blow of the utterly hollow failure that were Reagan's economic policies.
Also, Microsoft's defense is baseless, given that Apple -did- pay Xerox in the form of stock options. Apple played by mutually agreed rules, Microsoft coat-tailed (or acquired otherwise unauthorized goods - see the complete history of MS-DOS) and got away with it, repeatedly.
I'm NO Apple fanboy. There's a ton I would criticize the company for. But a world without Apple would be a NIGHTMARE. Apple products and services have served me well in the past 3 decades. My journey wouldn't even have been possible. And that I will always love the company for!
