    • @malzergski
      @malzergski 2 года назад +7

@@Dboy3504 It is easier at the very beginning when you understand about nothing in the language you are trying to learn. If you don't already have basic knowledge it is pretty much useless to watch anime with Japanese subtitles. That's why I think it is a good recommendation to start with subtitles in your native language.

UGH I WAS WAITING FOR THIS! I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for a few months now but I remember you said to avoid anime to practice because it’s not how natives talk but now I see there are ways to still use anime to learn. THANK YOU, adding anime to my schedule 😂❤️

From my experience anime will throw you off, mostly because of the use or rather the absence of honorifics. That's not true for all anime though(generally speaking school life / slice of life anime seem to be better at that). Some things remain though, you might know from English "anime" that voice actors tend to speak very clearly and without any slang. For example you might hear them say "Do you want to play basketball with me" but in reality a native speaker would likely use slang, especially younger ones and just say "Wanna play basketball?" leaving out most of the sentence and manipulation "do you want" into "Wanna".
This happens in Japanese day to day conversations on a regular basis. I also found that some sentence structures might not work in real life Japan, while they are fine in anime. -That said, for the first steps and even beyond I feel like anime is a good source to learn the language, it has its downsides but what doesn't. You might want to check out some Japanese reality shows as well to understand the language and how it's used more, I'd recommend "Terrace House".

@@theprophet2444 incorrect. When you are in an infancy stage of learning something as abstract as a new language you need as much listening practice as possible regardless of how it's taken in and in what form. No matter what you consume be it text book canned phrases or anime yakuza characters you need large amounts of spoken input to form a proper schematic of the laguage when spoken in real time. Anime is great at laying a frame-work for this. regardless learning something like a new language as grammatically different as Japanese will take around a year or two for this to even begin to take shape into something like speaking issues. I feel like you should be focused on understanding Japanese in the moment when it's being focused before you should even begin to speak Japanese. This is with two years of experience studying Japanese via immersion through anime, dramas, reality shows etc. You MUST have a varying diet of immersion and listening practice many hours a day if you want to reach any solid level of comprehension

@@maegalroammis6020 It really is not. This may sound rude, but I feel like the people saying that are being condescending to people wanting to learn. Because they will say stuff like "Well, IRl everyday Japanese people don't speak like in in shounen anime or like in Jojo" and it's like, Yeah, literally any person with a bit of common sense will know that IRL people are not shouting their attacks nor monologue all day nor speak like if they were from the Edo period (if the anime in question takes place then). The exact same thing happens in every single language. If you are watching a western Tv show centered around, let's say, the cartels, and they are using a lot of weird slang, it is obvious that that's not how people take every day. Like I said, it is just a common sense thing. However, just because 1 or 2 characters talk in a certain way, that doesn't mean NO ONE EVER talks like that in real life. Nor that the way they talk is wrong. Go to any place on earth, let's say USA, and you'll see hundreds of people talking differently to each other. Some being more formal, some using more slang, some using such heavy accents even other native speakers will have a hard time understanding them. People who act like how they talk in Anime is wrong act as if there was ONE single specific way to talk not just Japanese, but any language, when that's not true. Just like Cowboy said, when learning a language, any, you need lots of input, and you get that by listening to lots of people speak. With time, you start picking up what's normal, what's slang, what's more formal, and so on and forth. Telling people "Don't watch anime to learn" is like saying Japanese people "Don't watch American Tv shows to learn", it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever, both kinds of entertainment are made for their own countries population. If the way they talked in them was so outlandish, wrong or weird compared to IRL, then no one would watch them nor understand them in the first place.

What alot of people forget is the time they take to find the perfect way to learn something can be used on learning it the non perfect but fun way. I believe that there is no wrong way to learn anything. yes sometimes it can be unefficient and time consuming. But the consistency and the non procsination coming from a way you love to do will make a huge different on your learning process. Good luck to everyone here and Lets all learn and enjoy anime

Its crazy how I’m actively doing this and this video comes at the perfect time to highlight or just inform me on the things I need to do to practice more and reach some sort of fluency. Also currently watching JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure because of you and やれやれ😂. I know the Japanese within the show is not realistic but just so funny. It makes a lot of sense like you were saying with animators they do this for a reason to give the anime more characteristics or life. But I’m currently using Language Reactor for Netflix watching Super Crooks, which is so aesthetically pleasing and I’m learning so much already. I need to go back and rewatch AOT and Demon Slayer (all time favs). Also, I’m listening to Japanese songs (able to sing the chorus of a song without fail lol) and slowly but surely getting into podcasts. Thanks for this video and everything るりさん!😭

Thank you ruri! Anime is really helpful to learn japanese because you will get constant japanese input easily, it really helped me with my listening skills, i can translate japanese 80% of the time, even if I don’t understand 1 or 2 words i can tell what it means from the context, everything is thanks to 7 years+ of Anime. Once i was able to communicate with a real native japanese in twitter space, he talks in japanese and i can understand everything he said even though i reply with a machine translation. The problem that i always had is just writing japanese cause kanjis and hiraganas are hard, and i’m trying to study them now!

@Ruri Ohama This video is great Ruri-san!! Such great resources and recommendations! I was learning Japanese from mostly anime for about a year, but recently, I started listening/watching a lot more J-dramas, and they're great. While I actually agree with your recommendation of listening to anime at fast speed, personally, I don't want to do that because I prefer to listen to a good story in the speed it was intended. However, when I started watching J-dramas, I noticed that the speech is faster, more slurred, and more difficult to hear than anime. In fact, when I started watching anime again, I was surprised at how much easier it was to hear. So I guess watching J-dramas at normal speed is sort of my way of watching anime at high speed, without actually having to do it. Thanks again for the great video!

Having something you love and you're trying to connect to is a powerful incentive for learning a language.
I learned English by myself (school gave me the primary tools, though) because of my love for cinema.
Japanese video games are also something REALLY useful for learning Japanese, as you have tons of more dialogue and information (that mostly repeat themselves at least a couple of times). One day, dare to change the texts of your Japanese video game to Japanese (along with the dialogue, of course), and you'll have a hell of a fun and effective ride learning the language. Also, whenever you feel confident enough, change your devices interfaces to Japanese (or the language you're trying to learn).
Would you make a video about that too...? I'd love to watch it coming from an expert as I'd love to have you as a teacher. :-)
Thanks for all the knowledge you share and the effort put in your videos.

Knowing a lot about Excel and having had to deal with my wife's (Japanese) work computer for creating spreadsheets for her -- changing your interface is indeed probably a good way to learn but frickin' frustrating as hell! 😅😅

Fortunately I'm watching 2 hours of anime daily 😂 tbh I don't know if I'm making progress or not but I'm now able to get the simple sentences and even make ones. I also did learn kana and a little bit of Kanji and it helped me out sooo much

Ruri-chan's English is great to listen to -- smooth and well-paced -- not too fast and not too slow. Her pronunciation has a little bit of "thickness" to it that's really nice to hear (rather than a thin, clipped sort of voice, she has a voice with "body" to it, if you know what I mean?).

Thank you for the video. Guess you didn't have the time to add the list of recommendations in the description or a comment. I need to sleep right now but I will write down each one of your recommendations in a comment tomorrow.
