  • We shoot the Steyr Scout. At 6.5 lbs is this a very cool and fast handling rifle.

    That beauty is on the top of my "someday" gun list.

    Why take the rifle off your shoulder each time you reload when the point of your demonstration seems to be quick shooting? Nice rifle.

    Michael Douglas sported this rifle in "Beyond the Reach." It looked pretty sick.

    It would be nice for Steyr to include a muzzle brake with the price.

    You mentioned this on your (more recent) review of Ruger Gunsite Scout but I was wondering if you have plans to do a head to head comparison? Which would you get and why?

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  8 лет назад

      +13noman1 I think I would lean to the Ruger. Less money and therefore you can get a good optic. I also like the large capacity mags for the mission of this rifle.

      I own the original Ruger Gunsite Scout (16" barrel, laminate stock, flash hider) and have several of the 10rd polymer magazines and mounted a 2-7x leatherwood long eye relief scope-- the only things I wanted improved on the rifle seem to have been remedied in future versions that are available now:
      1. Moving to a lighter synthetic stock vs. the heavier laminate stock to reduce overall weight
      2. Increasing barrel length to an 18" barrel for better ballistics with the .308 cartridge
      3. Replacing the flashhider with a muzzle break to tame the .308 and a short/lightweight rifle
      All that being said, I still really enjoy the rifle and it is robust as you'd expect from a Ruger with a mauser-copied bolt. The 16" barrel makes it rather handy and using a safari ching sling it is a great combo to carry around for hunting and be able to bring up quickly and securely for a shot.

    I think Ithaca beat Cooper in the concept. He just applied the original "Ithaca Deerslayer" to a rifle.

      +Kane Jones I don't know. I know the Ruger Scout is available in both .308 and .223.

      +Guns, Gear & On Target Training, LLC I would be more interested in buying a Ruger if it came in .243 or .270, are the scout scopes easy to use?

    • @ddyoder
      @ddyoder 8 лет назад

      the scout scopes are easy to use and can use both-eyes-open aiming method when on lower 2-3x power ranges.. but once you magnify 4-7x you'll likely be squinting a bit or have critical eye relief. I've used a 2-7x leatherwood LER scope for a few years on my scout rifle but your mileage may vary. Cheers.

      The Ruger M77 turned out to be a very poor rifle, in terms of accuracy... maybe their other models are better, but I wouldn't bet on it... get yourself an older Browning A-Bolt, or the best rifle for the money, a Savage 10FP LE2. JMHO.

      Agree, Steyr's are NICE... but if the 10 round mag and bi-pod blows your hair back... why not an AR10 with a 30 round mag in .308? Add a Harris Bi-pod and you are ready to rock... that is the Scout's problemo, IMHO... it is not a hunting or long distance rifle, nor is it near the best option for a combat weapon... but nice? Yes it is.

      @@GeorgeKnew ...because no one looking at this gun is looking at an AR10. Not the same buyer really. Also, this was never meant to excel at any one thing, but be more broadly practical.

    • @GeorgeKnew
      @GeorgeKnew 3 года назад

      @@alpsalish More "broadly practical"?? roughly the same barrel length, far more capacity in the AR10, similar accuracy for its use. similar weight...
      Anyone NOT considering a AR10 when thinking about a Steyr Scout is either a newbie or a moron. JMHO.

      @@GeorgeKnew Where is the gun market in the US? Competition shooting and tactical. The scout was never meant to fit into those areas of growth. In any case, I am not the only one to point out your misunderstanding.

    • @GeorgeKnew
      @GeorgeKnew 3 года назад

      @@alpsalish Sounds like you agree, the AR10 is a far more versatile choice for competition or tactical... the Scout is a "niche" product... but YOUR misunderstanding is typical of the uninformed.
      BTW: The gun market in the US is predominantly personal defense... a category you ignore... Competition shooting is not even close, another misunderstanding by you. What you mean by "tactical"? Who knows... you refer to LE purchases? AR purchases? Again, FAR behind personal defense handgun sales.
      Sounds like you need to listen more than speak.

    First, that bolt looks really bad... hanging up on almost every stroke. Next, the forward mount on the scope might be nice for "tactical" or fast, close-up shots (where a tactical AR10 type would be far better) but who would want it for long game shots? Light, yes, but looks bulky. IMO, my 30.06 Steyr Mountain Rifle is a better, more useful design. the bolt is very smooth, it is a pound heavier, but a 20" barrel, "normal" scope setup, great trigger, less bulky, probably much more accurate at over 200 yds.

      +Tucson Jim Thanks for your comments. Remember this rifle was designed to Col. Jeff Coopers specifications as a combat bolt gun not as a hunting rifle. Like you I would prefer a AR type carbine (AR10) for tactical applications. I agree with you that the Mountain Rifle makes much more sense for the hunting mission you describe. Never-the-less, the gun was a joy to shoot and certainly one that some people might find useful. Thanks again for your insight and perspective.
