3:30 I've been told that, when asked why Kirby was so bad in Melee, Sakurai said that it was because fans of 64 kept claiming that Kirby was powerful because of favouritism, and some even confronted him about it. He made sure to make Kirby as awful as possible so that it would never happen again.
Z/L-cancelling was added because the devs wanted players to be able to use a defensive option really quickly after using an attempt. The original purpose was just shielding, but players realized if you tapped the button quickly, you would have the reduced lag but not be stuck in shield.
For Coney, Z-Cancelling is actually referred as a technique in the original Smash 64 manual also called smooth landing. This was implemented into Melee but there wasn’t any actual documentation into the game whatsoever on L-cancelling, so no it’s not am accident.
There's always that one guy who doesn't read the room and tries the grimiest strats during friendlies. I used to help run my university's Smash Club back in the Wii U days and one person would always choose Bayonetta. Would scare away newcomers who wanted to have fun
What are your thoughts on footstool combos in Smash 4? Are they grimey or is it fair because Mario can Up-Tilt you like 6 times into 4 Up-Airs into Up-B?
I think Z-cancelling was intended to make getting into shield after an aerial quicker, they just didn't expect people to press it and then not shield afterwards.
Lmao I remember that blizzard in Maryland, was living in Silver Spring at the time. Same mentality of “Yeah we’re not going outside for a week.” Also that fucking Lupe Fiasco “The Cool” just threw my head BACK in time.
@@saturn6277 2009, 2010. I just remember sleeping over and old friends house for a night then I woke up and had to somehow get myself back home cause we just moved in in August and the snow was up to at least my hips just walking through it.
Smash 64 is fun, but it's also very difficult to play, as you're constantly fighting with the controls. It might even be better to play via an emulator where you can use a more modern controller. Most N64 controllers are pretty beat up so movement becomes difficult (because you probably destroyed the analog stick playing Mario Party lol). But it IS something I recommend trying out if you're a youngin' who wasn't around when it came out :) I still remember seeing the original commercial with the Turtles song playing, and I fell in love with the franchise after convincing my grandma to let us rent it back in 1999.
“Sakurai knew what he was doing” I always wondered what he did exactly for development. Did he tell them how to make the characters? I know he’s the main director but a lot of people think he does everything lol
Not gonna lie, my favorite thing about Smash 64 all these years later is how fucking dangerous it is. No air dodging, no spot dodging, you can get put in block-stun for like a thousand years before you can do anything else, grabs are insane, some moves do stupid amounts of knockback compared to the later games and all this and more creates a game where one mistake has a high chance of killing you regardless of your damage percentage.
2:30 If I were to guess its probably similar to L canceling, im 99% sure sakurai said in an interview that it was originally added to make the transition from aerials to shield faster.
Coney talking about Brawl Minus... I am in love, I play it and got into one tournament. Missed another but I'm a decent player. The game has changed a lot and I actually make a couple of TAS videos. The game is fun
Brawl minus was actually the first platfighter I played competitively. Modern brawl minus is very different from what is in this vid. For example wario is based around pressing buttons a second time to fart boost. Wario also has his full waft on up b, and normal full waft is replaced with a rolling crate which wario can ride on
3:19 yeah here's the timeline: Sakurai makes his character, Kirby, good in Smash 64 then makes Kirby awful to lead people off the trail then he makes Meta Knight OP in Brawl then again, doesn't make any of his characters super good in Smash 4 but then in Ultimate he's back with Palutena.
Reminds me of someone who I went over to their house and played them in starcraft, and he got SO MAD when he just couldn't win. He would give up so easily too, the moment anything bad started happening to his base or if he lost a few units he would just give up. The guy was just so mad at himself and started yelling so loudly at himself, kept repeating things like "I SUCK" "IM THE WORST PLAYER EVER" things like that over and over, made things so awkward, I had to just leave at some point after he had a particularly nasty tantrum after one game. Like what dude lol
I have played every installment in the Smash-Series, and Even tho i am not a Pro, i feel That every smash has its Kind of charm to it. Smash 64 with its Doll-graphics and OGs, Melee With its Brutal engine and speed, Brawl and its story Mode/(i really enjoy Brawl Doubles), Smash 4 With Miis, amiibos and Unbalanced trash (my Cousin and I used to Play Random with Costum moves and Badges, and it was hilarious.) and Smash Ultimate With its Amount of Chars and Spirits and World of Light
Given Sakurai's more recently discovered love for fighting games like Fatal Fury, I have to believe L and Z Cancelling were just him wanting to add random tech into Smash for fun.
Two people I play with in Smash Ultimate take the game way to seriously and sweat like in a tourny when they are just in their underwear in their room. No talking, no getting to know eachother, or having fun.
Smash 64 is so broken that it loops back to being the second best balanced smash game (after ultimate) because every single character can do all sorts of crazy combos and stuff

Sakurai made a post talking about L-cancelling in 64. It's to look cool. It's even called "smooth landing".
I unironically pop off everytime when I see a Coney video in my feed. This is my "before they got huge" channel I swear.

It’s funny to think all this stuff would’ve been patched out if it came out today. Glad we have the happy accident that is Melee
For smash 64 at least half of it was intentional
“Sakurai knew what he was doing” I always wondered what he did exactly for development. Did he tell them how to make the characters? I know he’s the main director but a lot of people think he does everything lol
You know for a fact that he had more involvement in the earlier games than the later ones, though.
So that's worth factoring in.
WHAT? GIMR STANDS FOR "GOD IS MY ROCK"? Thats the most shocking thing I got from this video holy shit thats insane
I'm a zoomer and I played 64 as a kid and did not realize how high the hitstun was until I saw Heeew's video
You can’t convince me that the Luigi infinite guy sounds like something m2k would do
It doesn't sound like M2K wouldn't do it if it's optimal
That infinite is exactly what M2K would do

There ain't no way GimR stands for "Godismyrock" I am actually in denial rn
As a smash 64 player, thank you.
i love how coney reveals what gimr stands for to thousands of viewers and then absolutely refuses to acknowledge it at all
The fact that Isai is still winning tournaments is nuts
Seeing Luigi move around in the air like that is so weird considering his air mobility is hot garbage in the unmodded smash games.
10:00 there is a timeline where this become Smash's version of The Hateful Eight
3:19
yeah here's the timeline:
Sakurai makes his character, Kirby, good in Smash 64
then makes Kirby awful to lead people off the trail
then he makes Meta Knight OP in Brawl
then again, doesn't make any of his characters super good in Smash 4
but then in Ultimate he's back with Palutena.
