Thanks for a great video! I went to my local LP gas distributor's office. They sold me a kit with different sized orifices. We're at 6000' and tech told me to use the 55 instead of the 54 although both would work. The kit comes with a new cap screw with a plastic piece. He explained that the plastic plunger holds the regulator wide open for LP installation. The advice and explanation for how it works was well worth the $19.95 for the kit. Edit: I read the package and 55 is for Butane. I will go with the 54. BTW, I picked up this second gas dryer because dryer #1 had failed. (I replaced parts on it several years ago. More in a minute.) It was set up for natural gas. The flame was wild! I didn't know why. Dryer #2 also failed within a day or two of operation. Time for the temp clothes line! Bought repair kits for both dryers, wheels, belts, tensioner, thermal fuse, drum felt, etc. That's when I came across this video. Thanks! They are easy to take completely apart. I am glad I did. Both dryers had tremendous amounts of debris in the lint filter assembly. Just 4 screws in the back to remove. Dryer #1 motor bearings were loose. Went to the local ReStore and picked up an electric dryer for $10. The motor wiring connections were different but the color code was the same. Still, I spliced in connector #1 in case motor has to be replaced. Dryer #1 is up and running well. Dryer #2 now has new orifice and plunger and drum felt. Belt, wheels, tensioner, motor and thermal devices still good. This is now my spare.
Great video Jim. Here's a couple of tips I've learned over 15 years of working on these Whirlpool dryers. The door switch wires only plug in one way, no need to pay attention to the wire colors. Lean the dryer back against a wall or post or even a chair at a 30 to 45° angle and it will make getting the front panel off, the drum belt off and the drum out of the dryer far easier. Same goes when putting all the parts back together. I hold the belt in place with a couple of pieces of 6" long masking tape. I also leave the two screw retainer clips in the front panel in place and put a small piece of tape on then to keep them in place. Before replacing the two screws line the cabinet hole and retaining clip hole up by inserting a very small punch through the holes. I loved you video and now I know what it would be like to work on a new machine without piles of lent. Cheers, stay safe.
Thanks a million. I have the Maytag version of that machine and everything was spot on. I couldn't fine a 3/8 open end to get the orifice out, so you can take the 2 screws out under the gas tube, slide it out of the way and to get to it.
I followed you all the way to the vent tube, but mine didn't look like that... It had a silver cover with a white cap underneath, and inside is a black plug. Any ideas?
Looks pretty straight forward, thanks Jim! Now, after that is all said and done how would I go about hooking the dryer straight into a 7 gallon propane tank?
+joshua taylor Consult with a local propane distributor... they may be able to give you some valuable advice about pressure regulator requirements and they may have some of the fitting you would need... but be cautions because I think some natural gas fittings and propane fittings may be different.
The conversion (in this video) is to switch from natural gas supply to propane supply. If your dryer runs on either natural gas or propane, I would say your source of ignition has failed. If your dryer is totally electric then your heating element is likely gone bad. You might need to have a local appliance tech take a look at it....
Jim, How do i know when it is too much tightening ...while tightening the blocker thing for the conversion kit...i tightened it finger tight...then a 1/8 turn with the screw driver...however it still feels like it can turn more...Is by the blocker tube where i check for a leak?... When putting back the drum...if it was not put on correctly...the drum would not turn or it would sound different...right?...just not confident i got the felt on the outside like u stated?
Keno, Best to follow the instructions that should have come with your conversion kit. The blocker tube is fairly small and you could damage it if you get to heavy handed with it. The dryer drum, if installed improperly, will look off center and the front will not fit back on properly, or the drum will bind up and not turn at all if forced into the wrong position. Best wishes !
Thanks for this video! it is so ridiculous that these factories assume that everyone and everywhere have natural gas when only 39 % of the population do. At list they should include the LP kit with the dryer ! instead one has to go out and spend the extra money to buy one and then the manual tell you to hire "an expert" to do the conversion??! yeah right so you would spend - probably- a few hundred dollars on it?!? Ridiculous!!! Wait a minute! and it has a PLASTIC belt tensioner?! I be sure to change that too!
No. Propane clothes dryers can be converted to Natural Gas and vice versa by changing out the plumbing orifice. But electric clothes dryers will always be ONLY electric clothes dryers.
Even electric clothes dryers can have a fire hazard due to faulty wiring, but overall, I'd say the electric clothes dryer would be a bit safer than the gas dryer.
It's cool though because I can turn that flame up and make it look like a crawfish boil inside the dryer, it's supposed to be a yellow flame with a slight blue color on the end of the flame, you have to turn your regulator down
I bought a brand new smart maytag dryer and the regulator doesn't have it adjustable were u turn it to LP but it does say it can be converted to LP but yeah regulator is same but top of it is blank amd not turntable that's how I found the screw to tighten. But thanks I understand
I want to see you hook the gas line up and watch it turn on with propane. how come you always stop when you finish working on it but you'll never show it operating
This unit was used in a rent house... and it worked just fine after the conversion. But with the cover back on you would not be able to see the flame anyway.
Thanks for a great video!

I was hoping you'd have a video on this.

What a fine gentleman you are to take the time to show us how to do this. Your video is very clear and well lit. Much appreciated.
+Brian Cummings Thanks Brian. I appreciate you taking time to comment :-)
Now, I feel confident in converting my nat gas dryer to pro. Thanks for posting this video, Jim.
Thanks for your comment Jubilation !
Thanks Jim! This video really helped - so glad you took the time to put it together.
Thanks Samantha. I appreciate you taking time to comment !

Carl, That's great. Glad it worked out for you ! Thanks for the comment. Best wishes !
Thanks Jim. We just finished and it only took us 1 and 1/2 hours. this was just the help we needed.
Thanks for the comment Ben... glad it worked out for you !
Jim - thanks so much for this video! I had to convert 2 dryers to propane and this was a lifesaver.
Aaron, You are welcome and thank you for the comment. I hope both the dryers serve you for many years. Best wishes !
great video i have been looking for something like this for a while and at one moment I thought it wasn't possible.
great job sir you are the best in the world when it comes to dryers.
Jim, my dryer doesn't have the open screw on the regulator block, just a metal cap and plastic plug inside.
Old video but super helpful. Thanks
very nice video, very well explained nice job sir
good job,Mr. i have done this before with Chinese instructions and had everything upside down and back ass wards. you done good.......thanks
Golden! Thanks from Austin, TX
Ha ha ! Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment !
Excellent instructional video. Thank you!

Clete Flanagan GAS dryer Will the natural gas dryer work with propane Gas Dryer Conversion to Propane GOOD JOB Jim Thomas
In order to use propane, the gas dryer must be converted to propane using the appropriate conversion kit for your model dryer.
Very helpful video - thanks!
Had one that wasn't converted and it stopped working.. If I switched that Orpheus will it start working again? It turns just doesn't heat.

Thank you. Great información.👍👍👍
You can see the flame on the bottom left side it has a peak hole,
Thanks for this video!

Is LP more efficient than NG? Or comparable?
What kit did you order? I don't have the same brand but the parts look exactly the same. Thanks for the video.
It has been so long now that I don't remember, but I think that I just searched for my brand of dryer on Google to find the conversion kit.
Jim thomas is it safe to use propane on electric appliances ??

That true thanks for your help I appreciate it !
LuAnn Hanning Thank you so much you saved me 125.00 by doing it myself woohoo !!!!!!
No problems with it years later?
The dryer was in a rent house that has since been sold.
Gracias! 🇲🇽
THANKS JIM
I have the same dryer and I had to adjust the flame
How did u adjust flame i have to do that as well. Flame is wild and yellow. ?
You have to have a adjustable regulator for your dryer. A regulator that just goes from 0 to 10 psi. Mine has been working good for a few years now
It's cool though because I can turn that flame up and make it look like a crawfish boil inside the dryer, it's supposed to be a yellow flame with a slight blue color on the end of the flame, you have to turn your regulator down
@@stephenmckee6439 turn it clockwise right ? I noticed when I turn my clockwise it seemed to help alot may have to adjust it one more time but thanks
I bought a brand new smart maytag dryer and the regulator doesn't have it adjustable were u turn it to LP but it does say it can be converted to LP but yeah regulator is same but top of it is blank amd not turntable that's how I found the screw to tighten. But thanks I understand
Question : Can this be accomplished by installing a nozzle in the hose feeding the gas to the Dryer?
***** NO ! It can only be placed in the specific place where it was designed to fit.
Jim Thomas Thanks for replying
Preguntó porque la secadora arruga mucho la ropa
Debes sacar la ropa antes que pierda el calor y doblarla
Thanks u rock!

Unfortunately "finger tight" is a matter of perspective.
How much propane is used per dry? Alot? A little??
