    My aunt got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last week, one of the most deadliest and inoperable cancers. She turned 68 years old today, lived an incredibly healthy life, but the doctors gave her 5 months left to live. If she chooses to do chemo (which will only slightly slow down the growth of the tumor), she gets 4 months more. Yesterday she chose not to do the treatment, which I understand. This talking pillow scene did hit harder now that this is actually going on in my life.
    It's just crazy how this goes. She went to the doctor with mild complaints, such as tiredness and stomaches or something, nothing special. A week later it was certain. Cancer. Inoperable. I'm gonna miss her like crazy, and i cannot imagine the moment i am gonna see her for the last time, and say goodbye for good. My brain just cannot comprehend it. Sorry for ranting all of a sudden, i've been crying all day about this and this episode just hit extra hard.

    The majority of my family has died of cancer. They all did treatment, and while it did buy them a little time, they all regretted it. The complications from surgeries and sickness from the treatments made those few years miserable. So when my dog, who was the absolute love of my life, got cancer; and the vet said there was a surgery that had a very slight chance of giving him a few extra months (which would be painful recovery, then decline again), I decided against it. I’d give ANYTHING to get even 5 extra minutes with him, but I knew that was my selfish wishes. I couldn’t do that to him. And should I ever get cancer, I bought my home in an “death with dignity” state. I can choose to avoid that kind of ending if I want.

      @@TampaCEO thanks but Finnick died a little over a year ago. From his diagnosis we had a little over 2 weeks, then I had my vet come to my home to put him down, so he wasn’t in a scary, unfamiliar place. I painted a pink heart on the floor where he died. Now I have a new puppy, rimshot. Going from an old dog to a puppy is quite a life change :P

    Steejo let me just say so far you are reading the characters very well. This show is pretty clever about not always showing its hand and directly explaining character emotions. A lot is implied by seeing visuals and picking up on implications. Got a feeling you will catch a lot of things as the show progresses!

    True story, I was 24 and discharged from the Army. I partied with old friends, one night I was on alcohol and glass. I started throwing up blood and it didnt stop. I went to the ER. I had my stomach pumped and the bleeding didnt stop. I was losing consciousness when they asked if I wanted to notify loved ones, I refused because I was embarrassed of my situation. The bleeding eventually stopped and my family never knew my situation, Im still embarrassed to tell them how my end almost came in such a pathetic way, I've lived a good life since.

    This is, in my opinion, the most important episode of Breaking Bad. Not that it’s the best or the most well written or the most action packed, not even close, but because it establishes something incredibly important to understand for the rest of the show - Walter is the author of his own misery.
    The very strong implication of the first episode was that Walt was a weak meaning, good natured, hard working chemist who karma just hadn’t been treating well. The universe, it seems, has it out for Walter by cursing him with a dead end job, an emotionally distant family and no way of improving his situation - the cancer diagnosis was just the straw that broke the camel’s back to force him to seek means outside the law to pay for his treatment and provide for his family.
    And then along comes this episode and tells us “Lol no.” Walter was not done hard by, he had the opportunity to be a partner with a huge corporation. Walter was not shut out of a good life, he threw the opportunity for that away of his own free will. Walter is not some poor, impoverished victim of the system who never had a chance, he sacrificed that chance on the altar of his own spite. It’s Walter’s fault he’s not wealthy, it’s Walter’s fault he works at a run down high school and it’s Walter’s fault he can’t provide for his family on his own.
    More than that, in spite of everything he’s done to earn his situation in life, Walter has the chance to make amends and solve all his problems in one fell swoop. With one handshake, Walter’s troubles could be over. All he has to do is swallow his pride and ask Elliot for help… but that is something he can never do. To Walter, his pride is more important than getting the money he tells himself he has no other choice but to make meth to obtain.
    What’s particularly genius about the way the show handles this is that they gave us that false impression before we saw Walt do a murder. We had no idea Gretchen and Elliot existed, we sympathised with his decision to make meth, we felt we understood his reasoning and justified his decision to kill Krazy Eight because we believed he had no choice when he actually did… but now we’re in it with him.
    If you justified making meth, if you justified killing Krazy Eight, then you’re already justifying his decision to reject Elliot’s offer and continue to pursue illegal means to get the money because Walter has convinced you to go along for the ride with him.
    But at any point, Walter can swallow his pride, admit he needs help and get the money from them no problem. But, like when he walked away from Gray Matter, that would mean acknowledging there is something more important than his pride and no matter the consequences, that is something Walter White cannot do.

    When all is said and done, Breaking Bad could not be set in any European and almost every developed country because the situation would not arise. Walt would get his diagnosis and he would get treatment for free or almost, would probably stop working but as a government funded school teacher still get full pay for a decent amount of time, would be able to claim some kind of non-means tested social security payment (like PIP in UK) and thus money would not be in the top 10 of his problems.

If I remember correctly, Vince Gilligan (the show’s creator) has been asked if he meant for this show to be so critical against our healthcare system and he said he never intended it that way. The reality of medical costs is so normal for us Americans that we don’t really consider it until we hear a foreigner’s perspective.

      Walt's doctor is conveniently out-of-network, the one in-network said it was terminal. It's also set in 2006, pre-ACA. It's definitely a bit exaggerated for drama, but just for the record, insurance typically doesn't cover everything. You have deductibles and copays, and the insurance company will avoid paying for everything they can get away with. Realistically it would have probably cost him something like $10k annually, maybe with higher out of pockets for certain treatments or drugs if they weren't covered. You could probably find out the specifics of a 2006 New Mexico teacher's health insurance options pretty easily but I barely have the energy to figure out the details of my mom's medicare, so I'm certainly not gonna recreationally figure out Walt's lol

    So with the healthcare in the UK is oncology included with free or subsidized healthcare and what are the survival rates and availability of care seriously curious idk if anyone would know

    • @SuzySteejo
      @SuzySteejo  7 месяцев назад

      100% free, survival rate depends on which type of cancer but generally the same or higher than any modern country and you get treatment depending on the severity but no longer than 2 months after identification for anywhere in the UK. You can check the NHS stats online or check Cancer Research UK. - Steejo

    Everyone i know who did chemo and radiation died or got the cancer back within 5 years and died from it anyways but the people who chose not to do it that i know and did alkalining the body and changed their diet had the cancer go away and not come back ten years in now

    • @suzannemartin776
      @suzannemartin776 7 месяцев назад

      There's stories of ppl with the opposite outcomes as well though, like my friend who thought she would die within 2 years of all her treatment. Her cancer was pretty advanced and here she is kicking back in her own little place in the country 15 years later, with no relapse as yet. She is in her late 60s now. My sister-in-law also got treatment in her 30s because her youngest was only 2 when she was diagnosed and she had 4 kids. It gave her another 7 years which she felt was worth all the suffering because she could be there for her kids a lot longer. It's not clear cut and each person has to make up their own mind about it.

    The NHS isn't rubbish it's just underfunded because we spend too much on other things RUclips wouldn't like me to mention. We're lucky to have it. Our American counterparts will bankrupt themselves for a toothache unless they earn triple figures.

      Look up Medicaid and Medicare. Medicaid is literally for poor people and covers most expenses, dental included. There are also insurance plans through the state or federal. I had to have endoscopic surgery last year and Medicaid completely covered the cost of it in the ER. So your statement is just blatantly false. It's when people are uninsured because they don't want to spend the money on a plan where they go bankrupt if an emergency happens.

      @@censortube8662 Yeah well we don't have to worry about that. Apparently US health insurance is on average $420 per month or £330. That would be about a quarter of the monthly income of somebody on minimum wage.

    People saying the NHS is rubbish or we couldn't afford to provide healthcare are idiots. The reason we don't have socialized healthcare is the insurance industry and lobbyists. Our healthcare system isn't even good anyway, and healthcare is worse in red states where the government puts less funding into it. I live in Texas, the hospital in my mom's hometown wasn't profitable enough so they ended all inpatient care, it's now just an emergency room and appointment-based wound care and PT. And they just shut down their helicopter pad, so if you're in a serious emergency and need to be taken to a proper hospital, it has to be done by ambulance or you have to wait for a helicopter from another nearby town. Literally got a flyer in her mailbox basically advertising a medical helicopter subscription so you can get prioritized access to this company's helicopters in an emergency. So if that's the state of for-profit healthcare in our country, don't tell me we're better off.

      @@SuzakuX If you are using the source I think you are, you left out public health which FL is #13 and Texas is #23. Not saying it's great . US health care isn't great. But it's something. We have Medicare and medicaid and other programs for sick people if you look for it in your state. You can get help its not great but it's something. Look at other country's Healthcare and not Europe's health care which I agree is better and the US 🇺🇸 should adopt... if we stop spending billions on sending weapons to Europe and took that money for our Healthcare we would be #1 .we spend so much money on the millitary if we cut 15% of the millitary budget for Healthcare it would be a a great leap and we still be a millitary powerhouse.

    Our healthcare system is a touchy topic. It is absolutely ridiculous to be bankrupted just to live. But also the competitive nature of the cost somehow means people get better care than what I’ve heard from my friends and family that live in countries like Canada and Sweden.
