0.20 is about to be released in 2 weeks, I've seen thru FB the TechDrawTools addition, I imagine its been a long road to get to a spot where you rival Onshape & F360. Must be a very proud moment for the team. A big well done & Thx u to all.
09:40 What a missed opportunity to finish the whole thing with "... that we're viewing". Joking aside. Great, helpful and well delivered tutorial. Thanks.
Thank you for the video. And also to use a good resolution for the screen so I can see all the details. :-) I've seen many videos with a high resolution so it is sometimes difficult to follow. It looks like a pretty good start to TechDraw WB, I'll follow up and watch the other ones.
Just a bit of technical feedback on the video production side of things: Your audio levels for your mic are quite quiet... to the point where I'd turned things up enough that 0:53 was borderline painful. Perhaps you've already addressed this in future videos, but in case not, just thought I'd let you know that it would be very helpful to have more consistent (and ideally higher, for your voice) levels. Thanks!
Please, can you teach how to insert a quantitative table of elements into FreeCAD? For example, I have a wall and on it 3 windows and two or more doors. and the inserted table describes the object and quantity automatically
Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately when I request a print, FreeCAD responds with 'print to file'. I am using FreeCAD 0.19 and my os is 'Kubuntu 20.04' . Should this be considered a 'bug' or is there a 'work around'?
Good Video. Is there anything anything explaining HLR Parameters in the Data tab with more detail? I'm getting some unusual and unreproducible results depending on what I'm drawing...
The issue I have is anything over 12 inches becomes feet and % of a foot, and that means I have to break out a calculator to be able to machine that dimension on the lathe! I need every dimension to be in inches.
Thanks for this informative video. Being able to print a sketch at 1:1 is indeed very useful for me, however I am not able to configure freecad to print directly to my system printer. How can I do that? Currently freecad only wants to print to a file which might be usable except that the scaling information is lost.
Select Custom for Scale Type, then in Scale type "=" and a box will open up that you type 1/100 for scale ( or 1/50, 1/250 etc). Note, the "=" does not show up in the box.
I'm watching on a phone without access to the program at the moment. If someone were to create a drawing to be inserted and printed on a page within a book at a later date but the physical size of the book is yet undetermined, is there a way to insert a scale reference like technical drawings had in the past? I don't know if they even make those triangular wooden rulers I used as a draftsman to scale drawings anymore. People today probably would not know how to use one?
Every tutorial I look at claiming to be for beginners always starts with a part already drawn. Or some other previous knowledge of FreeCAD such as macros or templates. How do you start a tech drawing from absolute zero ? I have ZERO knowledge of FreeCad other than to start the program. I just want to learn how to do simple 2D drawings from scratch. Please point me to sources of these kinds of tutorials. Thanks !
In the good old days when I grew up, drafting was about making 2D drawings. You started with a blank sheet of paper and drew the part, view, elevation, plan, etc. But the world moved on to CAD. These days, we don't start with a blank drawing. First, we model the part. Technical drawings are an output and If they are needed, we generate them directly from the modeled part. That's the job of TechDraw. Like the Path Workbench for CAM and the FEM workbench for Finite Element analysis it's only useful downstream from the modeling process.
Also, there are several very different techniques used with FreeCAD and other CAD tools. Drawing architecture takes a pretty different workflow from modeling a small part for 3D printing. And there are different techniques even for each of those. When you need to design multiple parts that fit together, it's another set of techniques. There are several good books, including mine, that start at a simpler conceptual level and build up from there.
You can create as many pages you need. This error message apears when you haven't choose and open the page where you want to insert the view. Per page you can insert some views depending the size of your drawing.
Do you know of a way to go into the line weight file and change line weights? I just go into the combo-view and change it there. Those lines when printed are extremly heavy.
Techdraw is a core workbench so it is included in the release. You will need a recent version though. 0.18 at least. It has gotten even more upgrades since the videos were made.
Is it also possible to do a drawing with an assembly instead of a part? I did an assembly with the a2+ workbench and wanted to make a quick drawing with some dimensions, but I didn't get it running. on the other hand, when I build it in part design, to make the drawing with dimensions, there will be no partlist.....catch-22 :-(
Good question. I just tried it and it worked perfectly. I created a new page, Selected all the parts of the assembly and inserted them into the page as a new view. I didn't go any farther with it - I'm not an expert on A2+ - but I see no reason that dimensions and other functions won't work the same as any other view.
Is there any way to avoid techdraw doubling lines in the resulting SVG when I export?
5 лет назад+1
yes - use the dxf export - import in inscape and save as svg... the lines are not really doubling - there is also a fill - till i found the dxf export works as i want i did (in inkscape) - mark all black lines (select by same strockcolor) → delete - seems you have a blank page left -thats not the case - select all (Ctrl+A) → there are selection frames shown. - go to colors option: remove fill - and set outline to black. → now you have a closed path of your part (most of the time... ) the dxf exports seems to use a complete different 'engine' - but i did not dig deeper yet.. ( i would like to have a option to save as 'machine compatible svg' → i use this as output for laser-cutting..)
Ready to dive into the rest of these videos. The first one was great! Very clear. Thanks so much!

Very relaxed demo with detailed description. Highly recommend for beginner.
Thanks for video.

For those who may not able to find default path in Windows, here it is.
C:\Program Files\FreeCAD 0.#\data\Mod\TechDraw\Templates
thanks for this videos,You are a good teacher, I hope you show more tutorials
Still the most usefull tutorial!

Muy bien organizado y explicado el video. Gracias desde España.

How to scale up or scale down a view in the template? The 'centre scale' in View properties does not work.
how to indicate the area of the object and the number of such objects in the plate?
Thanks, just what I needed to know! :)
Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately when I request a print, FreeCAD responds with 'print to file'. I am using FreeCAD 0.19 and my os is 'Kubuntu 20.04' . Should this be considered a 'bug' or is there a 'work around'?
Thanks! These videos are very useful :)
how to position the projection 10 m from the edge of the sheet, and the second projection 15 m from the first? how to do it*
how to make the contours 0.35 and the cross section 0.7mm?
Good Video. Is there anything anything explaining HLR Parameters in the Data tab with more detail? I'm getting some unusual and unreproducible results depending on what I'm drawing...

I need every dimension to be in inches.
Of course what do I do if my part is too big for the page?
Scale it down.
My barrel was more than double the paper size and had to scale it to .3 to get it to fit.

There's nothing special in how FreeCAD prints. It uses the OS defined print system. When you hit the print button, you should get the os print dialog.
is it possible to make the scale representation classical? 1:1, 1:5, 1:20, 1:50, 1:100, 1:500, 1:2000, 1:5000...
Select Custom for Scale Type, then in Scale type "=" and a box will open up that you type 1/100 for scale ( or 1/50, 1/250 etc). Note, the "=" does not show up in the box.

The problem is that you can only create one page, more than one and you get the error *"Can not determine correct page"*!
You can create as many pages you need. This error message apears when you haven't choose and open the page where you want to insert the view. Per page you can insert some views depending the size of your drawing.
Is there a way to include GD&T symbols?
Do you know of a way to go into the line weight file and change line weights? I just go into the combo-view and change it there. Those lines when printed are extremly heavy.
I think you want to adjust the line group. Check this page: www.freecadweb.org/wiki/TechDraw_LineGroup
Great Video. How do I get the 3d cube you have on the top right of your screen?
It is available in 0.18 under Edit->Preferences->Display->Show navigation cube.
Thank you, that's why i never found it, I'm still on .017 :-(
How to add this techdraw workbench in free cad....?

@@sliptonic thanks a lot!!
I marked the assembly and that won't work.
I'll try to mark all single parts as soon as I'm at home.
Thanks!!

yes - use the dxf export - import in inscape and save as svg...
the lines are not really doubling - there is also a fill - till i found the dxf export works as i want
i did (in inkscape)
- mark all black lines (select by same strockcolor) → delete
- seems you have a blank page left -thats not the case - select all (Ctrl+A) → there are selection frames shown.
- go to colors option: remove fill - and set outline to black.
→ now you have a closed path of your part (most of the time... )
the dxf exports seems to use a complete different 'engine' - but i did not dig deeper yet..
( i would like to have a option to save as 'machine compatible svg' → i use this as output for laser-cutting..)
~3:25 er that depends on your printer settings ...
