  • In this video, I unbox and give my first impressions of the Kmise tenor scale banjolele (banjo ukulele). For full disclosure, Kmise sent this to me for review. My first impressions are positive! This tenor banjolele is a well-built banjolele with no apparent finish or construction flaws on first inspection.
It is available on eBay at this link:

That looks like a cool instrument. I think your idea to tie a bead to the end of the strings is smart.

Definitely! The A strings are so thin, you would have to tie a whole ball of string to keep it from pulling through without a ball. It should certainly also prevent the string from getting cut by the tailpiece.

If you get a chance to watch my video you will see that I didn't realize that they tied the strings together so when I was stretching the 2nd treble string they tied it to the first string. And I popped the high A. Very frustrating so that I had to change the string and it sounded awful. That's why I played a tune first. I already mentioned this to the folks at kmise.

Yes! As I tried to show in my video, the A string is scraped thin and I fully expect it to pop. I plan to cut it away from the E string and use a small silver bead to keep it from pulling through the tailpiece.

That is one of the coolest banjo ukes I’ve seen. I love the look and the sound. I hate it when they tie the strings together like that though. I’ve seen that before. It’s frustrating!

I agree! I plan to separate the A from the E and put a bead on the A string.

The neck is said to be okume and the sapele is the back and sides. (It's very similar to mahogany but less expensive). :)

Thanks! I realized that when I checked the Ebay description. Sometimes there are disconnects between product descriptions on different pages. I will clarify it in my full review.

Sounds great ! Thanks for this video. Looks like it will not be difficult to place the bridge, hopefully. Thinking about getting one like this (will be a birthday present from my husband, in July), or else an Ohana TK-120BUC Tenor Banjo, for more money with no accessories. I read that the Remo drum is ideal, (which the Ohana has),but this one sounds good.

Bridge set up is very easy. Just measure from the nut to the 12th fret, then place the bridge the same distance from the 12th fret to the drumhead. Then tune it and test to see how close the note is by plucking the open string and then fretted at the 12th fret. If the not is sharp, move the bridge closer to the tailpieces. After a couple of adjustments, you should be good to go!

I want to exchange my 5-string banjo for one of these and fit it with nylon guitar strings to make a budget Irish tenor banjo.

I believe Aquila makes a GDAE set of strings. That should do it for you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
