I'm not sure if characters for the game differ from regular minifigures but I hope there's at least some kind of marker on them. I highly doubt you can just use any old minifigure or vehicle you got laying around
Depends on the pod the minifig stands on, I'm not sure, as I don't have the game yet, but what I saw in some videos so far, those pods are labeled with the name of that character, you can't swap these (or maybe you can, can you?), the pods have some sort of chip in there and when you put them on the portal pad, they activate and voila. So unless you have pods for those old minifigs (and unless they are coded into the game properly), they shouldn't work. Or maybe they do work, but instead of showing the actual character you've put on it (one of those older ones), they would port into the game the characters, they are meant for originally.
+mjdog96 I'd recommend Cyborg, so you can melt golden objects. And the Simpsons level pack, to get a new vehicle, a character with sonar blast capabilities, and an exploding TV, so you can blow up some objects.

Is this game really great? Like can you spend a lot of time on it, is it as great as other lego games or even smaller? Want to get it too and I want to know how big it is and I don't want to watch RUclips-Videos of it because then im going to be spoilered.
It's your preference. I would go with the "Doctor Who" level pack, "Mission Impossible" story pack, "Gollum and Shelob the Great" fun pack, "Jurassic World" team pack and probably more. But I don't have that much money, so I will go only for the "Starter" pack, Doctor Who pack and Gollum. Ordered them already, just waiting for them to arrive.

Yeah, but in those, you use the portal thing only to port characters into the game. End of interaction. In here, you actually use the portal pad to also control the game, doing actions, spells and stuff. I guess that's what they mean.
False, you have enough to only complete the story and get the achievements. In order to fully complete everything (all minikits and character rescues), you're going to have to buy more of their packs.

I wonder though. Some characters have some unique abilities, but some upgraded vehicles have those abilities as well, so do you still need to buy the pack with those figures, or you can use those upgrades to get the bonus stuff (minikits, golden bricks and co)?
