Robbie is my all-time favorite guitarist. I have been to well over a dozen Band concerts, starting with their first Fillmore East performance in 1968. I was introduced to Robbie by a mutual friend in L.A., at a screening of Last Waltz in 2003 which, Robbie had recently remixed and remastered. The screening was in celebration of the 25th Anniversary re-release of the concert film. Robbie said he “hoped that I enjoyed his new mix”. Are you kidding me?! Some time later, our mutual friend delivered a copy of the Band’s “A Musical History” boxed set, autographed by Robbie(!), with the inscription- “To Donnie, Thanks for listening”. What a gracious and brilliant man he was… I am blessed to have met my hero.
I am a huge fan of Robbie Robertson and the band, watched this movie dozens of times. One thing that has always struck me, Eric is having addiction issues at this time, guitar strap breaks, almost knocks the mic in the beginning. But his phrasing and solo construction is amazing. He will play a phrase, pause then build the idea, just like any jazz great. Like how Richard Burton could be a bottle in and play Hamlet.
Great job, Michael. Having spent a lot of time talking about this film over the years, it's always great to see a guitarist go over such an iconic performance.
my favorite live show of all time. have this on vinyl and rock it all the time. Definitely one of my favorite performances from the whole show. love how Robbie takes over immediately for Eric when his strap falls. 2 legends. RIP Robbie. My brother in law got to film an interview with Martin Scorsese about the 40th anniversary of the film, and I was so jealous.
There is a group of Balitmore musicians that do a Last Waltz tribute every year on the night before Thanksgiving at the Polish Home Club on Broadway in Fell's Point. They try to recreate the whole thing. Even some songs that weren't included in the documentary. One of those was another Clapton song. He also sang All Our Past Times at that show along with Rick Danko, but it wasn't included in the documentary. This year is the tenth anniversary of the tribute. It's always a fun time and it's alway for charity. There are usally at least 25 musicians involved every year that just come out for the fun of the party.
Robbie is a great guitar player in his own right. He always seems more focused on phrasing than a lot of changes though. Something I love about him. Also I think Clapton is smiling a little bit thankful that Robbie saves him during that opening solo, which is why he is all smiles.
Sounds to be that Clapton's phrasing is so much easier to transcribe because they're all blues licks we've heard so many times before. Robertson is excavating as he goes.
Dig your channel man… youre a cool Dude….. love your approach to teaching…. Im a Clapton worshiper and have been since 67 when i played in my band in tulsa called The Society….. back when the record players took a dime to play a song ay the pizza hut after a gig we would put in 5 bucks worth and listen to the real rock and blues till 2 o’clock closing…Young Clapton being the most listened to… Oh God those days are priceless…. Wish you’d been around to hang with us and felt what it was like to have your soul filled with the greatest music ever made on this planet!!!!! Thanks for your teaching Mike this old has been knowes the value youre bring to our guitar learning lives.. Godspeed Brother..until the next time may you and your loveones keep safe…..
Please react to one of these Clapton videos below. They are some of his Best work: - Groaning the Blues (at his channel) - Have you ever loved a woman (at his channel) - Edge of Darkness - I shot the sherriff MSG 2004 - Best version BY FAR - Old Love Accoustic or 1992 at Mountain View - While my Guitar Gently Weeps Concert for George - Double Trouble 1978 (my all time fav version of any song by him)
I heard Robbie describe this performance from The Last Waltz. He noted Eric's sudden, strap snafu and how he jumped in immediately to cover the strap-gaff. He then describes the adrenaline flowing and how his filling in became a quitar challenge of sorts? became an unplanned, flat out shootout? Robbie was his charming self describing how he saw Eric raise an eyebrow with a look of ... Really Robbie,? OK then... it's ON old pal. It's ON. ;-)
My dad was born in 1951 and passed away at 68 years old. He started playing guitar at 14 years old, so its safe to say he played over 50 years, he was unbelievable at the instrument. His favorite artist was Clapton and this was his favorite performance. He said Clapton was at his best here. Robbie was playing out of his mind and it got Clapton going and you can see him smiling at Robbie like ok lets do this. And my Dad always said Clapton's solo was the best he's ever heard and you can see the crowd going nuts too. Just thought I would share that story, thanks for doing this video, I'll always associate this particular performance with my Dad
Hey, Michael! Lifetime subscriber here. Love this tune (I even suggested it a for a “reacts” video a while back). Thanks for noticing Levon - one of my all time favorites - one of the greatest voices in Rock n’ Roll. We had the pleasure of attending one of his Midnight Rambles in Woodstock a couple of years before he passed. Such a humble and friendly man! One of the highlights of my concert-going life. You would have loved it!
Both the Stones concert Shine A light and The Band concert The Last Waltz were directed by master director Martin Scorcese. He also did some camera stuff for the classic concert movie Woodstock.
That is what I love about live music from people as talented as this. No maybe not technically correct but sounds great. Live music is not perfect but it's the imperfections from the creativity that makes it so good. Love the music from this era.
Wonderful run through, Michael! Agreed, always much to learn from Clapton. (And Robbie) What gets me each time I hear Clapton’s performances is his singing. Expressive but with a vulnerability underneath that is a bit unusual in blues. His timing always impeccable too. Keep the great vids coming!
One of the greatest movies...saw it when it came out. I remember purchasing the three disc LP when it came out back in the 70s. So many great performances.
ive watched this every couple years ever since i first watched it with my parents when i was about 10. im way to young to know this on my own so im glad my parents showed me this great movie. i love the neil young helpless part
Great analysis. If you want to get an idea of how legendary The Band was just look at who showed up for this performance. Clapton, Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Hawkins, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Dr John, and even with all those guests The Band still had a butt load of their own hits to play in between the guests. And The Band is the only group that could and would play backup to all these artists. I saw them live 3 times and they were just such great individual artists that came together as a totally cohesive group whenever they performed live. You should also listen to the double live album Rock of Ages. It's a classic live album by a legendary rock and roll band.
I started using Music Man Amps after seeing this concert. I still have my HD 130 head and it still rocks. I have used it for over 30 yrs. By the way Joan Jett also used Music Man amps for a while in the 80s. Great amps.
music from big pink changed the direction of rock. Eric even went down to see the band in upstate ny to see if he could join. Robbie was no randy rhoads but he sure left his mark and left us with some incredible music. Rip
Just came across your channel and saw the 5 sacred songs offering. Tore my heart. Wanted to check out what you usually do. I have a music background and really enjoy your comments. Thanks
If you're a fan of the Last Waltz, you should come out to Colorado to go skiing around the first week of Thanksgiving and then catch the annual "Last Waltz Revisited" show. It's such a good time and Polytoxic does an incredible job with it. Local Colorado artists come on for a song or two and fill in for all the guest appearances (Buddy Guy, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, etc.). I could maybe even help you get up on that stage with them if you want play, too!
I read somewhere that Robbie went back with Scorcese and overdubbed some of his guitar parts when editing the film. Probably from Levon's book so who knows but if it's true some of what you see may not completely match what you hear.
@michael, checkout the Albert Lee solo on One More night. A major and totally unique. I went to school with Levon's daughter at UW-Madison. Really nice girl. Had to bite my tongue to avoid fanboying out and asking her all The Band and Steely Dan questions. Her mom remarried Fagen.
I'll just go there, when what could happen? Mike is way friggin' hot as hell. There, i said it. What a catch, ladies. Go after him.. . . .. . . . . . . . . .. . . . HEY, ANYBODY: ARE THERE ANY SHIRTLESS VIDEOS HERE ?
I Luv Eric Claptons Blues playing even with a toned down sound. Michael Could you do possibly review Adrien Moignard and Gonzalo Bergara swapping licks playing Djangos Tiger its here on RUclips you better put on your seatbelt for this one,LOLL! thanks Glenn
Dude, thank you! I'm such a fan of the band. Levon did a great album called spend it All with bow Thayer before he passed .. I rarely have met anybody that knows it, but it's such a good album. Wingless angels for the win?
Michael any update on the To Pimp a butterfly reactions? I rewatched part 1 like 50 times by far my favorite reaction to that album ever and I was not fortuante enough to see part 2 BUT now i see even part 1 is gone! Im sad!!!
I'm going to ask for a reaction to "Paul Thomas Saunders - Appointment in Samarra official live video" There's an accoustic version as well which is just himself on guitar and a friend on an old keyboard (which is how I found him so many years ago). Amazing artist who just, still, hasn't blown up the way you'd think after such a stunning opener.
In a recent interview, Eric Clapton mentioned he wasn’t particularly proud of this performance. His guitar strap is flipped up, and it pops off right when he starts the first solo so he hast to give it right back to Robbie! Still a killer performance, if you ask me…
Hi Michael,i have seen no one reacted yet to Steve lukather 's Little wing live in 91..amazing taste, insane tone and great vocals to,you should try it will be an amazing content !have a good day
Haha. Agreed, however I think it’s because the Hendrix team is one of the worst for copyright. That’s why you really just don’t see much Hendrix stuff on RUclips at all.
Blues scales are boring. Btw the best concert ever released? Not even close. Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is legendary. The Grateful Dead Movie of some Oct 1974 shows is amazing. Pick Floyd live at Pompeii. 3 examples that are worlds ahead of this simple bar room blues music.
Robbie Robertson is great, the Band is great! And yes, this might be best rocknroll movie ever! However, Clapton is probably the most overrated (boring) guitarist of all time, including that he hasnt done anything in decades.
Have to agree that this is probably the greatest concert movie ever made. Right up there with The Closing of Winterland and The Song Remains the Same.
Stop Making Sense
@@robertleggett1557 that too!! Good catch.
It’s the film the started all music videos.
Robbie's guitar solo on It Makes No Difference in this movie is one of the most emotional and tasteful guitar solos in history.
Robbie is my all-time favorite guitarist. I have been to well over a dozen Band concerts, starting with their first Fillmore East performance in 1968.

The depth of individual talent in that concert was spectacular

Great job, Michael. Having spent a lot of time talking about this film over the years, it's always great to see a guitarist go over such an iconic performance.
The Band is just so good live. They can play with anyone.
Rick Danko... “Happy Thanksgiving”! Epic concert. Great review.
my favorite live show of all time. have this on vinyl and rock it all the time. Definitely one of my favorite performances from the whole show. love how Robbie takes over immediately for Eric when his strap falls. 2 legends. RIP Robbie.

My Father's Eyes from Staples Center: One More Car, One More Rider ... most incredible solo!

Perfect description, love watching these two geniuses going at it. It is obvious they enjoy each others playing.
If not mistaken, that was the "Once We Were Brothers" doc. They also talk a lot about Robbie and Levon falling out.
My dad was born in 1951 and passed away at 68 years old. He started playing guitar at 14 years old, so its safe to say he played over 50 years, he was unbelievable at the instrument. Hey man. My dad was the same. He was 76, and loved Clapton, Beck, Marvin, Page…even the contemporaries like Satch and Slash. He just loved the guitar.
Hey, Michael! Lifetime subscriber here.

RIP to a great songwriter, Robbie Robertson.
I saw this first in 78 and have watched the last waltz many times at least once a year
Wonderful run through, Michael! Agreed, always much to learn from Clapton. (And Robbie) What gets me each time I hear Clapton’s performances is his singing. Expressive but with a vulnerability underneath that is a bit unusual in blues. His timing always impeccable too. Keep the great vids coming!

Just came across your channel and saw the 5 sacred songs offering. Tore my heart. Wanted to check out what you usually do. I have a music background and really enjoy your comments. Thanks
I learned the lead to this tune note for note years ago. A wealth of knowledge in blues playing and mixing major and minor pentas.

The last waltz is the best concert dvd I have ever seen. Well that and the led zep dvd with the desert in the front
Really love your work Michael, good luck in life chief.
hi i just gotta say i really really loved your tpab reaction and wish you all the best with your guitar content!

Winterland was my go to in the 70's
I forgot how much Freddy king Clapton was into. Keep hearing hideaway in it which I believe Clapton covered as well
I Luv Eric Claptons Blues playing even with a toned down sound. Michael Could you do possibly review Adrien Moignard and Gonzalo Bergara swapping licks playing Djangos Tiger its here on RUclips you better put on your seatbelt for this one,LOLL! thanks Glenn
"Maybe the greatest concert"
It is the greatest concert! ✌️🙂
Didn't break the strap it slipped off😊
Thank you MP!

It's happened to the best of us!
Hi Michael,i have seen no one reacted yet to Steve lukather 's Little wing live in 91..amazing taste, insane tone and great vocals to,you should try it will be an amazing content !have a good day
I think the video is a cut version from the actual concert. The song is longer on the box set.
Oh, man. Thanks. This and the Mayer - Urban are the two greatest guitar duels I know of. SRV and Albert King are close.
You should do Clapton & Knopfler acoustic version of Layla video.
That's the best you can do.
Greetings from Finland.
Check out RL burnside if you have never heard of him
You should checkout Through the echos, Paolo Nutini.
How good was Paul Butterfield / Mystery Train in the Last Waltz
The night they drove old Dixie down.
Best of the best. LH for life.
Do a Big River video
Try something else Focus with hocus pocus. With jan akkerman
Love your videos but the fact that you have one Hendrix "Reacts" video is criminal
Haha. Agreed, however I think it’s because the Hendrix team is one of the worst for copyright. That’s why you really just don’t see much Hendrix stuff on RUclips at all.
@@NickJardine^^ he’s looked at Hendrix covers I believe but I doubt any originals would be able to be posted here.
can you react to abim finger bro.. he's a guitar player too and i want to know what you think...🙏
When it's Clapton, it's "syncapated".
When it's me it's "out of time"
:( bummer
& also Talking Head's. Stop making sense
