Being a black man born in the 50s, I never realized that my caucasian cousins had such rough lives until I taught school in Columbus, Ohio. In the 1990s, I had white middle school students whose only dream was to be the first person in their families to graduate from high school. I had thought all caucasians finished high school. As a child and onwards, my perception of whites was Leave It to Beaver, and Father Knows Best and The Brady Bunch. Never in my wildest imagination could I have envisioned lower class caucasians. Old men on the porch in their wife beaters leering at young prepubescent girls walking to scool and with 40 ozs of beer to boot. I didn't know that class of whites existed until I was in my mid 30s. Today, I realize it is not a race thing. The struggle is real for so many. Get educated, be strong, productive and please don't do drugs.
There is a narrative about all of us and it's usually false. Narratives are a multipurpose tool. I know many white and black that believe what they're told regardless of what they see and experience.
I grew up in a very poor rual area and you sir are right. Poverty crosses all racial lines. My dad had a six grade education and my mother only had a third grade education. But they had survival skills you don't learn in school. I firmly believe that if everyone started life out poor we would have no racial problems.
@@madmikemackas Invisible to whom? My whole county and most of my state were poor and we certainly were not invisible. We had love and lived life, we just did it with less and I am richer today as a result. Money will buy you a lot but it will not buy love, happiness or peace of mind. I had all these things a a child, I do not as an adult.
As a Mom, this interview really got to me. When I heard the pride in Zach's voice about being a high school graduate - I wish I could have given him a hug. This young man has not had an easy life, but he really seems dedicated to keeping himself on the right track. Keep going, Zach ! You have your whole life ahead of you!
Absolutely this part tore at my heart. I’m from a family where if you don’t get a least a bachelors degree you’re considered “uneducated”. It makes me aware of the privilege I had being from an unbroken home, with a stay at home mom and a dad with a secure job. Some people are just given a handicap from day one through no fault of their own. Getting a high school diploma was probably very hard in his situation and I’m happy for him and I hope he continues his education.
The dude was so proud to say that he was a high school graduate. To most that’s not a big deal but to people that we’re dealt shitty hands like this young guy, it’s an amazing feat. Being abandoned by his mom and losing his dad in 9th grade is some heavy heavy shit for a guy that age. The emotional burden that puts on you is unimaginable for most. School becomes secondary because I’m sure survival was his goal. The fact that he kept grinding and finished is impressive to me. Hope he’s able to keep grinding and can eventually find success. He’s obviously got potential.
I agree, I'm very successful but I quit school in 8th grade at 16 yrs old and went straight to work. It's been 40 yrs of hard work in construction. This guy is quite the dude to have went all the way through school and graduated, it makes me jealous that I never graduated.
Man, Zach is something ELSE. His wisdom comes from his experience- not theories. The struggle isn't with others, it's with ourselves. He KNOWS that. May he continue on his way, stay strong and resilient.

I was brought up the same way. Always taught to walk away, but if push came to shove, be the last man standing. Fortunately, (knock on wood), it's never quite come to that, but I've never backed down either.

Amazing how our initial perceptions of someone can be influenced solely by a first impression. If you watch only the first few seconds of this interview you can come away with a completely different perception of Zach than if you watch the whole interview. The kid seems very perceptive and seems like he wants to do right by his son and himself. I wish him the best.

Hey Jameson. Love your channel. Sadly these kids need to confront their demons to break the cycle. Keeping all that raw emotional stress bottled up leads to a self destructive anger angry lifestyle that will keep a man/woman from seeing the simple happiness in day to day life. It’s like a cancer that overtakes your mind.

Zach, your final words were very touching and gave me something to think about. I'm 30 and also a person in recovery from alcohol addiction, my mom left me when I was a small child due to drugs, and my single dad raised me and just moved over 1,000 miles away. I'm a nurse and I just rearranged my schedule to be able to fly to go see him every couple of months because I know the money comes and goes but we are not guaranteed time. Thank you for the reminder that I need to cherish my few loved ones deeply, invest in them earnestly, and spend our precious gift of time with them.
Don’t always trust your first impressions. I’m a doctor interested in psychiatry. The comparison between the superficial testosterone fuelled energy in the first scene and the calm dark and honest reality of the interview is such a powerful example of how there’s so much more than meets the eye.

Ive never seen so many Naive Karens' in one place that literally have almost 0 life experience and offer up their "advice" or their fake ass caring comments, etc. And 85% of them are basically the same comment, maybe worded slightly different, on every video. Ignorant ppl dont realize they are ignorant and it can be seen a mile away. Sure, like they always wanna repeat here, "dont judge ppl" (which they do in the same breath) but its actually interesting how much you can sometimes tell about people from a simple little comment of written words. Strength comes from suffering. Where he lives, are some of the finest people on earth. They see a lot of tough times, but they love hard and are fiercely loyal. West Virginians are mostly Irish, Scottish, and Italian.
So well spoken, so full of wisdom beyond his years. This guy is a true inspiration. His positivity is infectious. I believe if he continues with that positive outlook and the confidence in himself and his decisions, once he is an old man with little time left, he can and will look back on his life with pride, serenity and acceptance!

I grew up throughout middle school and high school with him and graduated same year as well. His dad was one of poca little leagues football coaches. If you really talked to him ever you would know Zach is a great guy that sadly didn’t have it as good as the rest of us . I really hope he gets everything he needs in life and can use his experiences to make great decisions moving forward. You can never undo your past , but you can always set up your future . Zach , I believe in you brother just keep on pushing and never settle for less than what you’ve set your mind to & I’ll keep you in my prayers brother .
Wow! Such a kind testament to this young man's fortitude! I think he has excellent character for seeing the perils around him, & choosing to rise above! Anyone who turns their life around like that has a purpose, & it becomes greater than themselves! For him, I think fatherhood is his catalyst for change, growth, & positive choices in life. I, too, hope he succeeds! I grew up in NC, & saw many friends waste away, & a lot of ppl didn't make it. Sometimes the only thing to do in a rural area is to get in trouble, & do stupid, irresponsible things. Now, most everyone I went to high school w/has kids, & most seem to be doing really well! But, time catches up w/all of us, so time will tell how this young man's decisions have changed his circumstances. Lost many people young my mom being one,my relationship deteriorated,didn't wanna be here anymore,turned to drugs...mostly h*roin,everyone I know is on drugs( everyone is in WV),lost so many ...ugh. anyway been clean for 9yrs myself now and my kids are my higher power for sure. I admire this dude so much for his strength when I KNOW how much easier it is to just keep using...not having to care...not having to "deal" with the pain and grief! Keep it up man..you're a badass!

@@EkonRekon As an outsider, my family moved from England to the Southeastern US in the early 80s, and I was shocked and unprepared for the racism I saw. BTW, I am white. I was shunned by a lot the white students because I would speak up whenever I heard a derogatory term used to refer to a minority, mainly black students. I have lived all over the US and I find the South to be the most prejudiced against others for things than have nothing to do with a person's humanity, personality, character, etc. However, the good 'ol boys and gals do love each other.

He's a very astute person, who is very insightful about why we are all a victim of the human condition. This is one of my favorite interviews because it doesn't feel exploitative, he's not a person to rubberneck at. He's just a man. Born into a different family, with access to higher education he could have been anything he wanted to be. Good looking guy, too. It hurt my heart to hear he wanted his mommy so much that it's a wound that may scar over but will never heal.
The is my favorite one so far. At the beginning, I was expecting a much more darker story. I was elated to hear the positivity come out. It’s easy to tell how incredibly smart he is through his words in this interview. I met him at Rough N Rowdy and he was incredibly nice and humble. As someone who is from Appalachia, I am so proud of Zach for how far he’s come. Beating a drug addiction is MAJOR, especially around here where it’s impossible to escape from. Also, glimpse into what jobs around here are like: coal mining, factory, or fast food.

There is a narrative about all of us and it's usually false. Narratives are a multipurpose tool. I know many white and black that believe what they're told regardless of what they see and experience.
I grew up in a very poor rual area and you sir are right. Poverty crosses all racial lines. My dad had a six grade education and my mother only had a third grade education. But they had survival skills you don't learn in school. I firmly believe that if everyone started life out poor we would have no racial problems.

We had love and lived life, we just did it with less and I am richer today as a result. Money will buy you a lot but it will not buy love, happiness or peace of mind. I had all these things a a child, I do not as an adult.
As a Mom, this interview really got to me. When I heard the pride in Zach's voice about being a high school graduate - I wish I could have given him a hug. This young man has not had an easy life, but he really seems dedicated to keeping himself on the right track. Keep going, Zach ! You have your whole life ahead of you!
Absolutely this part tore at my heart. I’m from a family where if you don’t get a least a bachelors degree you’re considered “uneducated”. It makes me aware of the privilege I had being from an unbroken home, with a stay at home mom and a dad with a secure job. Some people are just given a handicap from day one through no fault of their own. Getting a high school diploma was probably very hard in his situation and I’m happy for him and I hope he continues his education.
The dude was so proud to say that he was a high school graduate. To most that’s not a big deal but to people that we’re dealt shitty hands like this young guy, it’s an amazing feat. Being abandoned by his mom and losing his dad in 9th grade is some heavy heavy shit for a guy that age. The emotional burden that puts on you is unimaginable for most. School becomes secondary because I’m sure survival was his goal. The fact that he kept grinding and finished is impressive to me.
Hope he’s able to keep grinding and can eventually find success. He’s obviously got potential.
I agree, I'm very successful but I quit school in 8th grade at 16 yrs old and went straight to work. It's been 40 yrs of hard work in construction. This guy is quite the dude to have went all the way through school and graduated, it makes me jealous that I never graduated.
Man, Zach is something ELSE. His wisdom comes from his experience- not theories. The struggle isn't with others, it's with ourselves. He KNOWS that. May he continue on his way, stay strong and resilient.

Amazing how our initial perceptions of someone can be influenced solely by a first impression. If you watch only the first few seconds of this interview you can come away with a completely different perception of Zach than if you watch the whole interview. The kid seems very perceptive and seems like he wants to do right by his son and himself. I wish him the best.

Of all the interviews I've watched, Zach moved me the most. At first I thought- who is this nutty guy. But then... What a wise man at such a young age. A hidden jewel. He could teach us all a little something about our humanity. What a lucky little boy to have such a father. I'm very impressed Zach, that you took what you've learned and used it as a tool to be better. So many use the past as an excuse to behave badly. Bless you and your son.

Hey Jameson. Love your channel. Sadly these kids need to confront their demons to break the cycle. Keeping all that raw emotional stress bottled up leads to a self destructive anger angry lifestyle that will keep a man/woman from seeing the simple happiness in day to day life. It’s like a cancer that overtakes your mind.

Zach, your final words were very touching and gave me something to think about. I'm 30 and also a person in recovery from alcohol addiction, my mom left me when I was a small child due to drugs, and my single dad raised me and just moved over 1,000 miles away. I'm a nurse and I just rearranged my schedule to be able to fly to go see him every couple of months because I know the money comes and goes but we are not guaranteed time. Thank you for the reminder that I need to cherish my few loved ones deeply, invest in them earnestly, and spend our precious gift of time with them.
Seems like a clever guy. Hope he throws off the shackles of his upbringing and makes a happy future for himself and his son.

My heart goes out to this young man. So much suffering, yet so much strength.
Strength comes from suffering. Where he lives, are some of the finest people on earth. They see a lot of tough times, but they love hard and are fiercely loyal. West Virginians are mostly Irish, Scottish, and Italian.
So well spoken, so full of wisdom beyond his years. This guy is a true inspiration. His positivity is infectious. I believe if he continues with that positive outlook and the confidence in himself and his decisions, once he is an old man with little time left, he can and will look back on his life with pride, serenity and acceptance!

I grew up throughout middle school and high school with him and graduated same year as well. His dad was one of poca little leagues football coaches. If you really talked to him ever you would know Zach is a great guy that sadly didn’t have it as good as the rest of us . I really hope he gets everything he needs in life and can use his experiences to make great decisions moving forward. You can never undo your past , but you can always set up your future . I grew up in NC, & saw many friends waste away, & a lot of ppl didn't make it. Sometimes the only thing to do in a rural area is to get in trouble, & do stupid, irresponsible things. Now, most everyone I went to high school w/has kids, & most seem to be doing really well! But, time catches up w/all of us, so time will tell how this young man's decisions have changed his circumstances. I hope for the best, & that he raises his son to become a good man w/a heart like his Dad's

I was shunned by a lot the white students because I would speak up whenever I heard a derogatory term used to refer to a minority, mainly black students. I have lived all over the US and I find the South to be the most prejudiced against others for things than have nothing to do with a person's humanity, personality, character, etc. However, the good 'ol boys and gals do love each other.

He's a very astute person, who is very insightful about why we are all a victim of the human condition. This is one of my favorite interviews because it doesn't feel exploitative, he's not a person to rubberneck at. He's just a man. Born into a different family, with access to higher education he could have been anything he wanted to be. Good looking guy, too. It hurt my heart to hear he wanted his mommy so much that it's a wound that may scar over but will never heal.
The is my favorite one so far. At the beginning, I was expecting a much more darker story. I was elated to hear the positivity come out. ZACH, you're an inspiration to have faced the struggles, loss, and difficulties you did and come out on top. Quite frankly, you're a bad ass bro! Thanks for having the courage to share your story. Zach, I was so blessed last night to watch your interview. It wan't just how clear and articulate you are but how you answered some of the tougher questions Mark asked. I noticed how you looked down briefly when you said you worked at Wendys. Please, please never be ashamed of working anywhere when it's to support yourself and your sweet little man. He' going to be so proud of you someday. You're doing great in this life. You've overcome addiction, you're very intelligent and insightful, you have your own home, a job and it sounds like you have some supportive family and family. I can’t imagine how hard this man’s life has been. Huge credit to him for making it past everything he has gone through and being able to talk about it. It’s easy to tell how incredibly smart he is through his words in this interview. I met him at Rough N Rowdy and he was incredibly nice and humble. Thank you for making this and allowing him to show us his life.
As someone who is from Appalachia, I am so proud of Zach for how far he’s come. Beating a drug addiction is MAJOR, especially around here where it’s impossible to escape from.
Also, glimpse into what jobs around here are like: coal mining, factory, or fast food.
He is very articulate. His world failed him. Imagine if he had the opportunity to go to college or move out
