    Hey guys, I'd like to give you some PRO tips on the aluminum tank.
    Unless you're welding both sides of the aluminum, you should never grind an aluminum weld, they are not strong enough.
    You need to weld in bulkheads to give the tank internal support and control fuel slosh which can actually blow an end out just from the fuel weight.
    Make sure you add a rollover valve/vent with a loop in the tube.
    That tank will never need to hold 100 psi. Anything over about 15 is more than good enough. Radiator tanks are only good to 20 or so in general and under pressure all the time. 100psi is a shit ton of pressure for any kind of welded assembly to hold, especially an aluminum one.

    • @blakekenley1000
      @blakekenley1000 5 лет назад +7

      Ill further this, use TIG on fuel cells, it's almost all open corners, which are easy to TIG. You'll have more luck. I've welded the stuff using push pull guns, spool guns, pulse and TIG. Spool guns are made for high production, low quality. They are affordable, but not very versatile (you need 65cfh of pure argon as well, only 12 to 17 with TIG). Your material needs to be almost food grade clean to guarantee a seal on the first pass.

    • @ragedigital
      @ragedigital 5 лет назад +1

      Do you mean weld in some baffle plates, not bulkheads?

    • @AZBADBOYz
      @AZBADBOYz 5 лет назад +2

      @@ragedigital I use the term "bulkhead" because most people understand a bulkhead encompasses or partitions if you will one section from another. A baffle doesn't necessarily have to touch all sides. Of course said bulkhead needs to have provisions(holes) for fuel to transfer and or equalize in a slower fashion than without but also hep keep a reserve of fuel at the pickup point.

      just cut the tank 3 inches all directions and rubber mount it! and add ribs to the surface, so it has some strength.

  • @lawrenceveinotte
    @lawrenceveinotte 5 лет назад +90

    I like to pressure test my tanks, and go over them with soapy water, just a regulator set to low, don't seal it to tight just so it will hold one psi, your tank needs to be vented anyway, you can do it I have faith.

    • @AddictedtoProjects
      @AddictedtoProjects 5 лет назад +3

      I agree. You don't need a lot of pressure to test a gas tank after welding. I used to test mine at 5psi. 10psi *MAX* because they will distort. A gas tank in the sun will probably never experience more than 1-2psi internal pressure.
      So @grindhardplumbing if your tank can hold 5 psi, and it's strong enough to hold up to the vibration, you're good! 💪👌

    • @comethiburs2326
      @comethiburs2326 5 лет назад +3

      @@AddictedtoProjects i'd still rubber mount the thing and make something to hold it up from underneath.

    • @pagravel90
      @pagravel90 5 лет назад +2

      When you think about it, the force that only 1 psi will put on a large surface is quite impressive. The bottom part of that tank looked like a surface of about 12x30" which is 360 square inches. That means for each psi, they add 360 pounds of force on those seams.

    • @wotever99ninynine
      @wotever99ninynine 5 лет назад

      @@comethiburs2326 yeah thats what i thought when watching the video. it needs ribs to strengthen it, a mount in the middle at the bottom, and all mounts need to be rubber. wouldnt hurt to make some baffles internally to stop fuel slopping around either. just some mesh or plates with holes. also having the bottom sloped down to the lowest point for the fuel would be best.

      ikr, it would have been hard to do. sooo much work, time and effort. the dude knows his stuff, and that includes knowing when something isnt working.
      (although, from other comments, that tank was pretty near good enough, and with more reinforcing, ribs to strengthen it, center mount at bottom, all rubber mountings, plates with holes inside tank to stop sloshing, and a breather hose fitted to the cap (preferably strong meshed hose routed away from exhaust) it would have been more that enough. general consensus is 100psi will never be encountered, more like 3-5psi max.. but with it that close to exhaust cant blame him for wanting it overbuilt. a raging inferno certainly doesnt sound like fun to me either..)

    I actually came across (by accident) a 2 Cylinder 2-Stroke built 60-ish Horsepower (Arctic Cat Snowmobile Motor) swapped Odyssey and that thing was terrifying. I got it on a good trade, played with it a little, realized it was a deathtrap and tried forever to trade it. Wound up trading it for a heavily modified 350 Warrior that was worn all the shit but was definitely built right and well. I will never forget that Odyssey though, its take-off was sad, but after it started winding out it would just try to spin the tires out on big knobby balloon tires and could do AT LEAST 60MPH+ when we tested it with a car riding right beside it. After 60+ on road, with no suspension and balloon tires, I chickened out and it wasn't even cranking out 9k RPM and I know for sure it could turn well over 12k. Scares me to think how fast that deathtrap could go, and if the next owner is even still alive if he tried to find out.

    The hour long slowmo welding video would be great, I'd watch it. It's too bad about the aluminum gas tank, I'd cut some of it apart for a skid plate that way it's not a complete loss for the build. But you did learn something, and that's what counts! 😁

    Freakin' love your videos! Showing real world, home garage engineering is so refreshing. Your editing and music are excellent! Can't wait for the next episode. What's the next build idea? How about port-a-potty go-cart? LOL

    How are you going to keep the motor cool?
    I thought about putting a Rotax 800 in my golf cart, but (like most snowmobile motors), max engine temp is supposed to be 120-130F. Those temps are easy to hold with snow...

    My first crack at welding aluminum was building a dock. Let's just say I'm not worried about water getting trapped in the tubing!

    If you can afford it get a AC/CD TIG welder, PrimeWeld 225TIG only 750 and i love mine. You could probably still save the aluminum fuel tank. Good fabrication practice though, lots of persuasion and persistence.

    Just take that fuel tank into a radiator shop they will seal all the holes up and pressure test it.
    That's my job on Monday pulling a rusty tractor fuel tank and taking it in to get repaired at the radiator shop

    When i was single an had lots of time on my hands, I built a "go kart" from scratch and powered it with a 570cc yamaha engine. With no diff it was a smoke show machine, but hard to corner at high speed. Was about the same size as this one, but with smooth tires. It ran the 1/4 mile in 11.7 seconds at 120mph.

    if you take another stab at the tank, add a baffle or two and a surge pot to pull the fuel from; sevenish gallons of gas stored mostly width-wise, sloshing around offroad, is gonna cause some fuel starvation without baffles...
    edit:
    and coat the inside with some fuel-safe epoxy from the likes of POR-15! no more pinholes to worry about. 😉

    you could have put a divider in the middle of the tank so that the fuel would not splash back and forward or side to side while driving. that's gonna be a lot of gas

    The different genres of music in this vid! Haha. Your channel is by far in my top 5 subs. Amazing work guys!!! Btw, I think your gas tank is still salvageable. It doesn’t need 100 psi just make sure it doesn’t leak.
