I Can't Believe This Big River Fish Took My FLY! Epic Fight!

- I'm not a fly angler, but the times I have been out have been really fun. I decided to set myself a really tough challenge. To catch a barbel on the fly! This is tricky enough as it is never mind for a novice fly angler. With wind speeds expected to get over 40 mph I knew this wouldn't be an easy task! The plan was to target the barbel and in turn hopefully come across the target species along the way.

Chris continues to be the best U.K. angler on this platform. I find catching barbel hard enough with bait, now he's tossing around fluff and still catching them!!
You are up there as well Carl . I've learnt so much between the both of you . I'm hooked and addicted as much as the next passionate angler now everywhere I go I just want to fish .
Only because the river he fishes stuffed with fish
@@Lukas9877 most are lol it's how rivers work 😂
i went fishing a fishery in wales my dad caught a 2 pound chub i caught an 11 pound barbel on 7 maggots
@Lukas9877 funny thing is it really isn't 🤣
Anyone who has been watching you for a long time, will know your reactions are not “acting” and they are your genuine emotions caught in the moment. The same going for people saying you’ve “staged” things like the flood water fish rescue, also don’t know you or your channel!
Fantastic fish on the fly, staggering!!!! Congratulations!!
I've been fishing just over 40 years and am reasonably proficent at most forms of it here in the UK, but I gotta say Chris you really are an exceptional angler and how with some phenominal catches, your likeability and high quality video production you only have 161k subs is beyond me! Thanks for the vid loved it. 🎣
I can say that i've seen good fisherman in most of the country i've been. But him, he is the best by far.
He doesn't fish normal places like us!!!! The places he fish are stocked constantly it's hard to blank where he fishes trust me. I know someone who k owns him....
I feel like fishing and hunting is a dying sport as such kids these days dont want to get up before its light and get into the woods and rivers fishing they’d much rather stay in bed and play video games and stare at there phones for hours
@@bobnudd6879 ok bob
Yer the places he fishes look heavily stocked ..... ... they practically throw themselves up the bank there are so many fish!!!!!! Get a grip mate. He produces some of the best fishing videos on youtube. Simplez. @@bobnudd6879
🎉I fly fish for years now but never managed to catch a barbel - hats off, mate!
Give this man his own TV series. Shows Such a passion for his angling.
You , angling 360, Carl & snaggedbro have got me back in to the sport again. Love it. Cracking fish bud. Top content top lad
(Richard here) Appreciate your content. As a long time fly fisherman, just a word of advice: When you walk, lead with the reel seat end of the fly rod and the tip trailing behind. There is much less chance of catching and breaking that delicate tip on a branch or other obstruction. Having to cut the tip and install a new tip-top will change the action of the rod as well as ruin your whole fishing day.
Congratulations Chris. Stunning achievement. You are every inch a fly angler. How you went about this is spot on. Don’t take any notice of the naysayers. Just keep on doing what makes you happy. I love your enthusiasm. No problem with excitement when you do something special. Keep up the great work.
Thanks mate!
Nice one Chris. I’d imagine you are the only person to have ever caught a barbel on a Black Zulu! When drifting a nymph like you were, you generally get the best hook sets if you to strike downstream because you’re less likely to pull the hook out of the fish’s mouth.
Chris, by now, should have had numerous offers from TV production folk, he is such an amazing ambassador for anglers everywhere!
Despite fishing being the most popular participation sport in the UK, other than Pool, it's still very much a niche market for TV. I think what we have with YT is perfect for creators, letting them decide on their own way, not being dictated to by producers seeking viewing figures.
This always baffles me.
What are we classing as a participation sport?
How is football not the highest? How is pool more participated in than fishing and football?
He should be the next John Willsion.
@@samuelgarrod8327 Great points, brother, fuck TV and the MSM, we want an independent Chris!
Haven't watched TV in years, all propaganda and agendas!!!
Can't believe that people with say your excitement is genuine. Anyone thats fished can tell it is . Your definitely the best fishing channel on RUclips 😊
Mate don’t listen to any negativity!!! You kill it every video!! Seems to be the way of the world with the internet these days. Reading these comments you have a lot of positivity too, which is truly deserved!!!
Jealousy is what makes people awful . They wish they could do what he does .
Amazing angler .
@@yorkietipper1606 too right. I’m not wanting to point fingers but I don’t know if it’s generational, I’m 35 and times just don’t seem the same online anymore. I was here just before it started, as it started and then now. This past 5 years online has gotten crazy with negativity. You are bang on, he is an amazing angler! Can do the lot!
Chris absolute top quality as always. Saddened to hear of some of the negative comments towards you. You airways come across as genuine and with such a passion for being out there and sense of not taking it for granted. Awesome bro 👏 🤙👊
I did quite a bit of euro nymphing for barbel a year or so back and found they would happily take almost anything (including squirmies) trundled past them. It was quite surprising how close I could get to them and most of them were hooked no more than a long rod length away. One tip would be to put a bb shot about four inches from the nymph - this seemed to get round the tendency to foul hook fish in the pectoral. Love your work by the way. More fish on the fly please!
What a video i swear your innovative ways of catching your quarry are second to none . Keep up the great work , the subscribers truly appreciate your patience and hard work Chris 🎉🎉❤❤
I don't think your reactions are "acting" your just genuinely hyped bout catching someone you've wanted to catch there's nothing wrong with that, when I go fishing with my brother or my partner I get excited when I catch someone and it's all bout making memories of what you do, plus you make good videos and I like watching them, some people are just jealous, keep up with the good content and stay positive. 👍🏼 🎣
Some of the European anglers on the Wye, target barbel on Czech nymphs, roll casting under the bushes in the faster water when the levels are down, some of their catches have to be seen to be believed, some of these guys are at the very top of the game ( all catch and release)
Great content Chris
Amazing to see how versatile your fishing is mate. Coming from a stocked trout fly fisherman it's brilliant to see other species, other than trout and pike, caught on the fly. F the haters you're some angler mate!!
Dont worry about the negative nancies Chris, keep doing exactly what doing, for every one of the haters, there's 20,000 of us that appreciates what you do and do better than most
What a great catch, a Barbel on a fly. Amazing sounds of the wind blowing.
I recall watching John Wilson fishing on TV, with his little laugh and his 'Super Fish' phrase when he caught.
Best fishing channel on youtube.
Brilliant a really good watch. Nothing wrong with the squirmy worm though great for grayling in the winter but you were right not to use it in that clear water. I’ve seen videos of others catching barbel on the fly and most seem to be using beaded nymphs like the pedigon. I like the way you worked that out using your coarse skills and tungsten putty. Barbel being bottom feeders will go for euro-nymph tactics and heavy nymphs I guess. I have heard this form of fishing is popular in Spain- time for a family holiday 😂
Golden touch Ginger you smash it every single time . I love your videos you inspire me massively . Keep up the videos my favorite content by far .
Ignore all those trying to put you down.
I'm 51 and have been fishing since I was 4, (with my dad).
I absolutely LOVE your videos and all your explanations of what, where, and why you DO what you DO!
I get excited like you, whenever I get a 'biggun', OR a 'hard un to catch,' on the bank! 😁🎉
(*Hey, I even caught a Tench, on 'Floating Bread'.... And a 3lb Chub on a Hula Hoop crisp)
Try THAT!!? 😁👍😇
Keep up the good work! 👍
Well done butty awesome fish those people who commented about the flood water are just jealous their not as good as you keep up the brill work you do fantastic channel 👏👏
Fantastic fun. Great job Chris as fun and success achieved. Ive been stillwater fly fishing here in BC and AB for over 20yrs now. Im getting older so Ive adapted to fishing flies with a slip bobber and a spinning rod. I still tie and fly my own. I say good job mate its all about getting out there and doing it and you got it covered. Happy fishing Chris. ❤️✌️👍
Thanks bro, another entertaining video. Also, glad you showed the dried up pond. To see how it looks. All them doubters need to fix up
Absolutely superb as always. Best on RUclips by a country mile!
Great video Chris. I noticed you have got two Hare’s Ear Nymphs in your box (middle row, to the right of the two pink and one yellow flies), give them a go with the barbel. Those who fly fish for barbel over here in Portugal use those a lot with great results.
Superb as usual keep them videos coming 🎉❤
Never lose that enthusiasm that is why your channel is fantastic. Great to see you on TNTs on the bank
Chris you’ve got it all wrong….. as an experienced fly angler myself I’d never go looking for barbel on a black Zulu fly in a 40mph wind!!!!! Total respect mate 👏👏👏👏👏
Man, just react how you feel. We are all fisherman and we know this kind of excitement. It is one of the reason we like to watch your videos. And second, don't proof anything to anybody.. we know you are genuine!
You really should write a book.Chris you are up there,in my opinion,as one of the greatest British anglers I have ever known or heard of.
What a cracking session! Coarse fly anglers wet dream 🎉
I'm not at all surprised at your success with a fly. Being primarily a fly angler myself, I'm often amazed at your success with conventional gear! Great job Chris! I look forward to enjoying each video immensely.
Wow well done Chris , Barbel on the fly amazing . It’s hard enough to catch on a lure but on a Fly it’s a big thumbs up from me 😃
starting to think i was the only one fly fishing for chub and other course fish, great to see thanks for sharing 👍
I love how skillfull you are! im decent angler myself, but ure just incredible.
I've been waiting for such an epic film for a long time. Fishing for barbel and chub on a delicate fly set is a wonderful feeling. In my experience, weighted nymphs (tungsten beads - Polish nymphs or Czech style Nymphs) and nymphs imitating shrimps work very well. In OUR area we have a few interesting rivers. Returning to your set, with such a style of fishing (similar to Euro-nymphing), I would change the tapered leader to a regular mono, e.g. Maxima 12lb, finish it with a small ring and tie to it 3 ft fluorocarbon 3x or 2x. I'm more than happy to give you some of my files, Ttight lines :)
Hi Chris, I fish under the elders on small streams here in Germany. I've never fly fished but I have caught barble on my own little lures. I use a standard sea fishing rubber bead on a short hair rig, trotted under small float. I dip the beads into blackcurrant jam before casting and guess they look and taste just like a larger version of the elder berries I loose feed. The little hole in the bead makes it easy to hair rig them and, it carries enough juice for 2 or 3 casts. I do catch more dace, chub and ide than barbel but when they do come it's a real treat.😊
Another great video Chris, can't believe that some people were doubting your reasons for rescuing all those small fish, there's some sad people out there
Barbel on a Black Zulu fly usually used on a floating line loch style fishing - 👍
I loved the chilled vibe of this episode. Thanks!🙌
There is nothing more satisfying than achieving what you set out to catch on the method you chose.
Keep up the good work Chris
You done everything a fly angler would've done in those conditions...bow and arrow casts in those winds was the way to go...and matching the hatch so to speak, great video!
Just don't let the purists hear you calling them "fluffy" flies😂 or you'll be met with "oh you mean 'hackled' flies", in a patronizing Alan Partridge accent 😂
I'm now only referring to them as fluffy flies 😂
@@The_ginger_fisherman a-ha!
Really impressed with your set up, your video quality and your attitude.
Amazing 😊😊😊😊
Always amazed at how you get access to so many rivers, find that thats one of the most complicated things about fishing in the UK, where you can and where you cant and who should you contact
Nice I’m a fly fisherman con from Ireland good job nice fish 🎣 got big trout over 20 and 30 pounds on fly 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That is really some achievement in that high wind and those overgrown banks.Well done ! The first fly you caught on looked like a Zulu . Not sure of the others . Never mind the names-they worked. I really enjoyed this video.
Another great video, Chris. Thanks for the top content. Ignore the negative comments, mate. Green eyed monster! You smash it, dude! 👍
Loved this video ,as a trout fly fisher it was really interesting to see a course fish caught on a fly !
Mate top video and top fishing I could watch you all day long. Don’t change how you are, nothing like hatching a plan and getting rewarded with quality fish. Ignore all the negative wafflers. You have a large appreciative following. (Should be way more). Tight lines buddy 🎣🎣🎣
I have lived fishing for 54 years of my life ,watched many fishing tv programmes, videos and books by top anglers and in my opinion Chris is up there with the greatest anglers in the country.
You did it with passion. Nice catches. Congrats
You’re an amazing fisherman Chris. You always come up with the goods.
Chris that was ace! Some awesome fish during that session! Well done 👏🎣
That trick with the elderberries was genius! Great vid as always Chris!
Great to see you out fly fishing! Awesome fish as well and the fishery looks amazing!!
I thought he'll not get owt on that black zulu... shows you're right for having a go with it...
Great fishing/rivercraft and dispenses some of the 'fly fishing's for toffs' attitudes.
Ping me back if you want me to make you up some flies, be glad to help 👍
Great video. You're an awesome fisherman. Thanks
Well done my friend, little tip Chris if your fly fishing deeper pools for Barbel, Chub, Perch use a small trout indicator set slightly over depth like an inch, its worked for me when I have targeted course fish on the fly.
Honestly, your videos are just fantastic, knocking spots off of the competition on RUclips, definitely John Wilson reincarnated! Bloody awesome 🤩
Your very best video yet!! Chris, this was such an inspirational video. 🙏
Brilliant work. Go out with a target and complete it . Epic.
Love your vids mate. Take no notice of those that have negativity. You inspire people to get out on the bank👍
Yes I have caught barbell in Poland and Slovenia on euro nymph fly set. This year in Poland I lost a trophy barbell which broke the hook and netted two reasonable barbells, I also caught two good size mace 👍
I'm impressed, very impressed. Cheers and tight lines.
I've been looking out for a new fly fishing video from you literally 2 days ago, glad to see one again 👍
Great to see Chris, it’s a kind of fishing that needs more publicity! I fly fish for a lot of coarse fish, and it’s a shame more people don’t. Fly fishing will die if people don’t start going for coarse fish, as fishing for trout and salmon is far too expensive.
Hector Rodriguez is THE guy for barbel on the fly, it’s worth hitting him up. He caught plenty of big pike, carp on the fly too.
Nice session Chris .cracking fish👍 were would we be without those haters 😂😂 you shouldn’t even react pal ya better than that
Well done man! Great to see you did go out and do it after our convo 👍 think i got really lucky with my "fly" caught barbel on the first attempt.
I feel the same way buddy 😂
@The_ginger_fisherman maybe it proves its not luck then🤣
Fantastic video Chris, just shows that sometimes trying something different can really pay off, well done on the Barbel, awesome fishing
I like fly fishing. Keep up the good work!
Well done Chris top angling. I think the fly is a black Zulu .
Nice one Chris, wonderful vid...
Cannot believe you haven't been invited to appear on the Mortimer and Whitehouse fishing programme.
That was awesome Chris, what a great video mate.
Hi Chris - fantastic - no right or wrong when you pull them out like that, a lot of snobbery about fly fishing, my preferred method but all fish take a fly, surprising how small many of the flies large fish will take but they each masses of small invertebrates - excellent video and keep on celebrating fish in your own way! 👏👏👏
Eat!
Well done bro. could feel your excitement !
Great catches and nice vídeo, as usual!! Congrats!
Great video again Chris 👍caught my first barbel yesterday 🐟
Well done Chris. Top job as usual. ;)
Smashed it again Chris. Best subscription on you tube.
Awesome!! Love your content man!! Genuine excitement!! 👍
Love how you set yourself challenges to catch fish using unconventional methods, it really is elite angling. Boss channel, every upload is an education.
Legend and supreme waterman ❤
That was an amazing bit of fishing Chris, considering you havent fished the fly much!!! The fly you caught the Barbel on was a Zulu, if im not mistaken, a small lure for Trout!! I'll bet hardly anyone has even attempted to catch Barbel on fly never mind actually catch one!!! Brilliant stuff!!! Really impressive, you could certainly have your own TV show, its that good!!!
Great video again Chris and nice fish you have caught welldone!
Such a good angler and gives a fine potted strategy
Great catch on the fly, nice barbel. Chub also love dry fly. Try a well dressed klinkenhammer, they will rise to it every time 😊
Brilliant session. 👍🏻
Totally awesome fishing show channel does alot of barbel videos in dorset,
Well worth a watch chris,
👍👍👍
Beautiful Chub, what a beauty!! 👍🏻
Well done mate 👏 dont worry too much about negative comments, you do what you do 👍
Fantastic watch as always Chris 👌...how anyone could hate on the way u act by catching fish is crazy please take no notice...your content is up there with the best on RUclips...no one does it like you...keep up the awesome fishing and content 👍
It's sad that people think you're acting! I'd be just as excited!
ACTING ! Really ? Chris your enthusiasm and passion for fishing is infectious m8 . It's why we all go fishing, its why we subscribe to your channel, keep those videos coming , stuff all the "haters" tight lines "
