  • The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, a critically endangered subspecies of the Grasshopper sparrow, is endemic to the dry prairies of Central Florida and shows signs of recovery from the brink of extinction. Once deemed the most endangered bird in the United States, population counts plummeted to as low as 80 individuals in 2019.
Thanks to concerted conservation efforts, current estimates suggest there may now be as many as 120 individuals as of 2024. While recent trends offer hope for their survival, the species still teeters on the edge of extinction, facing ongoing threats.
During the months of March to May, male Florida Grasshopper Sparrows vocalize to attract mates during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. This particular video was captured on May 12, 2024, in the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area.
