They were just a few years older than me, and had been barely-post-pubescent teenagers at the time, when they were ordering their elders to recite passages from Mao's little red book. (When I knew them, they were grad students at my university.) I've been reminded of that more and more in recent years as the "woke/cancel culture" disputes have gotten louder.
This is a universal human frailty -- tribal hysteria -- that can be unleashed by any ideology. It's the exact same phenomenon as what drove the Salem Witch Trials, except that episode was inspired by Christian extremism, instead of Maoist extremism.

Predating on children was a joke when women were doing it to boys, but is suddenly opposed now that sick men calling themselves women want in on it. People like Walsh are half the problem because their highest priority is to hold women sacred above all other considerations, even the safety of children. Of course weak men will want to become women when being a woman means unearned praise and no responsibility.

Peter and Andrew are very diffwent. Very different. I have watched a lot of Peer's Techniques with students standing on position lines etc and what Peter is mostly doing is facilitating a conversation and a debate and never really coming to much of a conclusion nor taking a stance to combat The New Puritan beliefs. I gues this is because deep down he also worries about being cancelled. Andrew has developed his stand in particular over the last two years, as has Helen Joyce, as has Douglas Murray where they now take a very clear, concise, and well articulated poistion. They know that the hysterics are not debatable - they simply wont debate - so there is not much point facilitating endless debates. We also have Harry Miller and The Bad Law projct and they are literally taking each and every Police Chief in the UK to court over their new Non Hate Crime Hate Crime activities - Harry is not debating them he is simply finding them exposing them and threatening to sue them so he is literally going after the Woke Police in the UK and he is winning as they collapse like a pack of cards everytime he does it. You should go on RUclips and watch an example with Harry Miller and Lawrnece Fox when they help an Army Veteran who has been apporached by the Police for something he re-posted on line. You will then see what I mean

Peter has already been cancelled. I think you're not understanding Peter's street epistemology efforts here. He's not trying to lead anyone he speaks with on the street to reach a different conclusion. He's trying to get them to understand what the basis of their beliefs are. You are not going to change anyone's mind on a 10 minute conversation. You might, however, get them to question. Someone who starts questioning things may start looking for alternative information. Peter has other forums for his advocacy efforts.

However I am totally skeptical of most woke ideology and totally don't buy what they're selling with sex and gender but is this really surprising? I mean, really? Overstatement as in y\our claim that "every critic (silenced) with phony accusations of racism/transphobia/etc, the only critics left are the people who really don't care about your label, or actually embrace it" isn't what makes Boghossian and Doyle so valuable to the Biggest Enemy of All, Illiberal Education which reproduces and replicates itself in the name of some single unifying theory of why the Power Elite should retain and further consolidate their power.
Look at what Boghossian and Doyle actually argue and question in their individual writings and sharing of frustrations over the inroads made by Illiberal Education among Liberals! Consider the function of Illiberal Education compared with the evolutionary role of barely perceptible long historical role of Liberal Education. Yes, you are right, this is not about labels. It is about the value of questioning everything and remaining slippery enough to not fall into the trap of what linguists like Lakoff and Chomsky call "The Rhetoric of Certitude."
In solidarity with the very Wage Slaves who made those privileged positions in the few bastions of Liberal Education that exist whether in Public Universities or the paper mills of issuers of Golden Passports at the Private Elite institutions, right now those exploited Wage Slaves are the actual researchers among the Post Grad students that need to work for little to no credit and no tenure track positions as Perpetual Publish\Perish Research and Teaching Assistants to the Tenured and Federally Contracted Policy Researchers who are the only ones in the Grand Student Debt game with any job security and stable family value lives amid the spread of Adjunct Instructors and increasingly Adjunct contract professors. Their research, writing, presenting and promotional work leaves those Post Grad indebted students among the Precariat while their bosses in Tenure Land hoard the credit and the inflationary compensation packages.

Language evolves in response to changes in society.
This is not evolution. It's creationism. It's changing society by changing the language. It's directly out of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.”
“The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought - that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc - should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words.”
      - George Orwell. “Nineteen Eighty-Four”
You mocking this concern is telling. It's the ruling class who want to narrow what can be said.

They were just looking for a simple answer to your question. There is this thing called "translation." The Japanese translate thousands of books every year into their own language. There are fully enough English scholars to translate all the foreign books they need. And the Japanese are VERY interested in what is going on around the world. The true answer to this question is more like "because Japanese culture does not have much room for intellectual ideologies: they are a very practical people, who focus on day-to-day issues. (FYI, I have lived in Japan for 46 years, and am a Japanese-to-English translator.)

Almost nobody in Indonesia speaks Arabic, and yet Islam is pervasive there, to the extent that it's the country with the largest Muslim population.
The saddest thing of all in that country is that almost nobody there has ever read the Islamic scripture in their own language, and have no idea what it is actually saying or telling them to do. They're just regurgitating it phonetically and obeying their mullahs who tell them the bits they want them to know.
We see this happening with the Woke religion too. Most of the believers don't actually understand it.
Many of them will screech "that's not what it's about!" when the scripture ("scholarship") literally says exactly what the critics say. Which is similar again to Christians who have never read the bible and don't know what's in it.
According to a Christian advocacy group called Lifeway, less than half of all Christians in the US have read more than half of the bible.
So, not understanding doctrine isn't necessarily a barrier to its adoption or imposition.

Great topic. Reminds me somewhat of seeing the content of Harvard Business Review and topics such as human resource management making it's way from the business world into government, church, charity etc in the 1990s/2000s.
There was a former speechwriter of the Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating called Don Watson. He wrote a book "The Decay of Public Language" and commented on language with corporatism and its tentacles into our culture. This seems like a natural evolution where what we term woke culture and language permeates everything. Then suddenly as Andrew Doyle points out you have the UK Ministry of Defence talking about LGBT instead of focussing on the main game of thwarting the real enemy, i.e. Vladimir Putin.
