      Because it's not about the money, the US could single handedly contribute the share of every NATO member in their stead and it would still be beneficial, because NATO as an organization keeps Russians (and China) at bay, the funding is irrelevant, what matters is the threat that the alliance poses in itself.
      If China and Russia see the alliance wavering because of shallow reasons such as funding, it'll only make NATO look fragile and they'll start questioning whether the US would actually intervene to help those countries.

      China ($252 billion [estimated])
      India ($72.9 billion)
      Russia ($61.7 billion)
      United Kingdom ($59.2 billion)
      The US 🇺🇸 like Americans is armed to the teeth. The USA has cherished the role of military superiority. Trump had no idea what the logic of that aspect of American history means, entails and its strategic responsibility. Moreover he gave an 70 Billion to the military; a quid pro quo with the Generals who supported his candidacy, on top of the over 778 billion he budgeted.
      The US over 100 years ago realized the benefit of having the strongest military on the 🌎 globe.
      Trump's threat to leave NATO, like TPP and NAFTA was ill advised deconstruction. His bravado was tough talk without understanding how things work. The USA seeded access way to China by leaving TPP and returned upon realizing that it was a boon to China. His NAFTA signaled a win, as he made concessions on climate control which he had not intended...

    Imagine if you had insurance, but you dont pay your insurance. Do you really think the insurance company will cover whatever happens if you dont pay?
    The countries that feel that are threatened should not just ask for help. They have to do their part to. You gotta help yourself, before asking for help. It's common sense.
    Also, these countries are not poor. They can definitely use the 2% of their GDP on defense. I could understand if they were 3rd world countries. But all the NATO members have good GDP. No that is absolutely stupid thing to do. Take an example of USSR (then) and Russia (now). Even if USA backs off and keeps 5 countries in the NATO, its no longer as powerful as it was before. NATO makes sure you are not fighting alone and backs up those countries when they need it. United we stand divided we fall. Even if USA stands alone, it will still be the most powerful country out there. But USA will lose ground in europe affecting its performance in the middle east. And NATO isn't about being bodyguards to other countries but it is about maintaining peace among the european countries. Unifying the currency which makes it harder for those countries to justify war instead of diplomatic solution. And again NATO isn't a body guard. NATO is just a bond between countries just like there is a bond between brothers per say. If you hurt me, my big brother (USA) will whoop your ass. And what does the big brother(USA) get? Yeah, but it is an 'underfunding' that only matters to domestic speechwriters. From an actual readyness perspective it is a non-issue. It makes a great sound byte because it is really easily referenced by people with no domain knowledge, but it has so little impact that no one who actually has any influence or accountability cares even a little. The meme exists purely for domestic reasons.

    The argument that Vox is making seems close-minded and bias. Sure, if Trump proposes that the US might not intervene in conflicts against NATO countries that do not meet the 2% treaty, the image of NATO will look weak - I agree with this. However, if all NATO countries were to meet the requirements (which, let's remember, each country agreed upon when they each joined NATO) then wouldn't NATO be stronger than it is today? It seems to me that Trump's plan to persuade increased military spending would only encourage a stronger military alliance; something that is even more necessary today. Now, I by no means say this to convince anyone that this was Trump's intention all along; I believe Trump says the first thing that comes to his head that will garner media attention and bolster his image of stubborn arrogant 'patriot'. However, that is not to say his plans don't have more consequences to think about other than the one that appears on the surface and which mainstream media use to publicise Trump, because it is usually the most shocking and attracts the most viewers. Vox, I understand that it is a lot to ask for a 4 min video and I have always accepted that you guys lean left, perhaps the recent Trumps polls have you screaming over there, but I have always valued your media the most when it shows me a perspective that is nuanced, honest and scrutinised. The pro-Hillary media have all jumped on the bandwagon of: ridicule Trump and don't mention Hillary; it's tried, tested and it works! I only advise you don't jump onto this if you value your core viewership.

    • @neeneko
      @neeneko 8 лет назад +15

      NATO probably would not be all that much stronger if other nations met their 2%. 2% is a raw number, a guideline that says nothing about how that money is spent. That money would also have to come out of other spending, which means it could weaken the other nations in other ways, which would also weaken NATO as a whole.
      This is why the 2% thing is not being taken seriously by actual military planners. It is a nice simple idea to sell to domestic voters, but its implication in actual NATO strength is pretty meaningless.

      They never agreed to the 2% when they signed. They committed in 2006 to increase their spending to 2% of their GDP by 2024. Also, it was never a rule, more of a guideline/suggestion. Pressuring our allies to increase their commitment is fine but publicly threatening to withhold our support is idiotic and makes the alliance look weak.

    The more I learn about the world, the more complex it is. This puts a bit of context as to why a country would want to be involved in a war it seeming has little to do with. Sure there may be wars out of fear, anger, or otherwise, but also there are wars based on treaties like these.
    It's difficult to say if this has prevented all conflicts, or made conflicts more discreet (or both, people are so complicated), but it's nice to learn about context of why a country would want to go to war.

    I think the issue is a bit more of a catch 22 than presented here. The reason its an issue for other NATO members if the US doesn't live up to their defense obligations is because other members don't have or aren't willing to have the defense budget of the US.
    If more NATO members were willing to increase their defense budgets, not only would they be less reliant on US intervention (which is often said to be an issue until its convenient) but they would also be more competent themselves.
    I do not agree with Trump here. I believe the US should keep its promises, but I do see his stance as valuable. It pressures other member states to step up and fulfill their own repective roles in the treaty.
    People wonder why the US is so often looked to when muscle is necessary. Its become a joke, that the US is the "world police". But this is why. Imagine if the US hadn't intervened as much as it did during the Soviet era. We'd be seeing a lot more communist corruption, with such shining examples as North Korea or China.
    Its important that we look at this from all sides. But still, we must not abandon our allies, and I don't think the American people would stand for such action.
    I'm no expert here, clearly, but those are my thoughts.

      This right here. Look to our Allies in the South China Sea, most of them are increasing military spending which takes a load off the US. I'm not sure if Trumps methods are perfect, but he's definitely right in challenging the currently accepted behavior of most NATO countries which is, "let's increase spending on social welfare and decrease military spending, the USA will pick up our slack."
      The USA gets the short end of the stick.

    • @mage1over137
      @mage1over137 8 лет назад +1

      The issue is the 2% budget was set when NATO was first created because the power balance between the US and USSR was more even. Now the US the only the super power and the reason most a lot regions are stable is threat of US intervention. We don't actually get defense out being in NATO, but we do get stability. If those other members start to spend 2% of budget it put strain on their economy which hurts us indirectly, and we literately get nothing of it.

    As an Estonian as old as my country's post-Soviet independence, I can say that this was big news here. Also, what I've gathered from all of this by now is: Trump has no idea who is and who is not "fulfilling their obligations" in NATO (thus is once again proven unfit for office), that Newt Gingrich can calmly insult a whole independent nation by calling it merely "suburbs of Saint Petersburg" and that oh dear, we are still unsafe, no matter what we do and how much time passes.

I don't think the EU would stand idly by while the Euro could be destabilized by something like a russian annexion of one or more of these states. I guess in this case lots of NATO-Nations would still mobilize against Russia, even without inital US-American support.
