    Sharpened my 15v shaman to DMT course (325 grit) first, and noted the toothieness like you mention. I wanted a little more push cut though and took it to dmt fine (600 grit) both grits were stropped on 1 micron diamond paste on leather. I will say at 600 grit it's pretty impressivley sharp, but this steel really does like the lower grits. Once this edge wears out, (probably be a while) i intend to take it back to 320 and and refine on the strop. 15v is quite a beast when done on low grit and not as bad to sharpen as i would have guessed. I would say it's slightly easier than s90v. Must all be in shawns heat treat.

    I have sharpened a huge amount of 15v and I mean a huge amount. It is one of those steels that very much does well with a high polish. Even off F1200 dragon stones I can keep a significant amount of aggression/bite in the edge. It's strop responsiveness off the 3/2 micron stones is crazy, it just comes have to hair popping over and over and over.. I personally like mine at F800 over f1200 as I like that slightly more aggressive cutting profile. My mule is on its 11th edge from cut testing and it's really impressed me with pretty much any edge finish I've done.. next edge will be a F1200/F150 dual grit just to see how it likes it. This steel has been an absolute pleasure to sharpen.

      Does it polish at a courser grit than other steels? I’ve noticed that hard m390 will polish at f800 where softer Chinese m390 needs 1200=200 to look polished. Just one way that a steels quality can be deduced from sharpening.

      This will be interesting to see in testing as well if you haven’t tried the lower grits on the 15v I would try them super aggressive and burs remove easily. I follow your instagram to see the edges you do. Always very impressive the edges you do

      Your gonna be amazed at the edge retention of th dual grit edge! Don't over strop though.
      I'm rather fond of F 800 and f240 dual edge and lightly stripped with 1 micron. Only one or two swipes per side on a very hard strop. It is my go to method for S90V.

      @@stevenlachance8576 Yep, harder steel polishes faster at a lower grit than softer steel of a given type.
      A trick I learned, not for a polished edge but a polished bevel on the edge before a micro bevel of 1/2 to 1 Deg. Once the bevel is where you want it. Rather than the normal sharpening strokes, dry any lube off the stone (Venev) and move it long ways on the fresh bevel very lightly. As the stone loads from no lube, it will mirror the beven and finish with norman stone either one or two edge leading strokes to remove the burr and finish with very light edge following stokes. If using an F800 Venev, it will appear as a fully mirrored edge but with a bite from the f800 stone. No stropping needed at all.
      I use trend Diamond Lapping (sharpening) fluid only on my Venev stones, NO loading whatsoever. After al long sharpening session, I simply put one or two drops on the Venav and rub with my finger. All black disappears instantly.

    I have a 15v mule, I am been really impressed! Cuts forever and no rust. I live in the PNW and expected more rust concerns. I was able to see a patina after cutting strawberries from the garden

    4-600 grit is where it’s at for me on most steels .

    Love these. Bought all three models!! I do wish they’d have stuck with satin on the shaman

    I took the factory edge off the knife by running it on a 400 grit stone at a 90 degree angle, then sharpened it 2x at the factory angle.
    The edge cut 800 feet of cardboard and was still very sharp. The steel will improve dramatically with a few more sharpenings.
    I've been caring it for 8 months. Great knife, excellent heat treatment. Thanks for the video. 😎👍

      The edge on this guy even after only one sharpening is putting up a fight, just doesn’t want to dull

      @@allthingsknives The only problem with 15v is that all other lower performance steel is very unattractive by comparison. Thanks again for the video..

    Might be repost..
    How do you plan to manage the plunge grind? Been trying cru-wear dual grit edges by taking both sides to venev 1200, then backing off the left side to400 or 240 venev with very little stropping. Seems to maintain bite a bit better than regular edge cru-wear.

      Yeah I keep hearing about dual grit edges I’ll have to try them, I’m not too worried about the plunge grind my Venev stones get in their no problem

    Remember, F400 is actually what we are use to in Ansi and Jis 800 grit. So not so coarse after all. ;

    • @michaell397
      @michaell397 11 месяцев назад

      My bad, F400 = P 800 grit, Jis 700 grit, Lansky extra fine. DDMT Fine. This is not a coarse grit! You will find that the high vanadium steels cut better with qa true coarse edge. 600 P seems just about right. A dual grit, 200 or 400 and no higher than a true 600 p on one side, and 1000 or 2000 grit, (800 venev is 2000P) on the other with a very very light strop on 1 micron will blow away just about any other method. Unreal the cutting ability and edge life.
      If sharpened correctly, and with the proper grits Cruwear cannot even approach the edge holding of 15v. 15v is in an entirely different universe! 7 toes the vanadium content at least. I still have a supply of the original version Called Vasco Wear by Tyledine. Good Steel! It was used for the locking detents on the 747 that carried the space shuttle and is used to this day for input shafts in funny cars and top fuel dragsters. It is that tough.
      As to the stropping taking away the bite, try this. Strop on 1mm, one pass per side and no more than two with only the weight of the knife. NO Pressure!!! None!!! ;

      That was me converting from the FEPA grit I have a conversion chart in my carry journal I created so it is 400 grit ANSI
