I had the great honor of being 1 of Carl's trombone students while attending college. Carl used to fly me to Las Vegas for the summer in order to be able to hang with him. He took me everywhere. I sat next to him in the pit during his show gigs, recording sessions and the all night jam sessions at the union hall on weeknights. He gave me one of his Bach trombones and his signature model Jet Tone mouthpiece. The mouthpiece was way too small and shallow for me, but I do play his trombone on some of my jazz gigs. Oh, and the 4 summers I spent with Carl were from 1979-1983. Those were and still are the best 4 summers of my life...PERIOD!!!

Imagine playing along with Carl and Frank Rosolino. The absolute thrill of a trombonist’s
    life. I miss them.

Kevin Baker There are a few young trombonists who have mastered the "doodle-tongue" that Carl used, but these guys don't swing like Carl. They just play fast tempo notes just for the sake of playing fast. There's zero music or creativity in what they're playing!

There are darn good players out there today, but Carl was very musical with his skills. One thing I always believe with Jazz - it has to make some sense to the listener. There needs to be an internal logic and Carl had that in spades.
The other thing I love when you can see him play is his slide action. Of course, he was a big man, but his slide work is so elegant and effortless. He never looks like he is pumping with his arm. The wrist and fingers are following the slide which is propelling itself.

Fortunate to have heard him at Carmello’s in LA in early 80s. Place was half empty but Carl blew the roof off as usual. We miss you, Carl!

He played for Kenton, you fool.
He could have laid waste to the Walls of Jericho, had he wanted to.

Did you listen to the entire recording? Yes, Carl Fontana had an airy tone and wasn't a power player, BUT he also had an incredible speed and range. Look him up. He played with Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, and Stan Kenton.

Carl had an amazing sound. I've never heard anything less than gorgeous come out of his horn.
