Aliner Ascape - Pam's Review

  • On a trip to Maine, we ran into Pam and her Aliner Ascape. This tiny camper has always caught my eye, but looks can be deceiving. Although there was no mechanical issues, I learned a lot from Pam's criticism of her trailer. This may be the perfect RV for you, but it certainly wasn't for her. This video reiterates the importance of renting campers and watching reviews before we buy.

    One thing for everyone to think about is that the locks on many RVs the Aliner included is that they are all keyed the same. So people with the same brand can open your camper. I changed my lock on my Ascape Plus right away.
    My impression was that she was frustrated that day and was venting. If you never cook in your RV why buy one with a kitchen? If you don't like the mattress change it! If you don't like being cramped buy a bigger unit. Most of her complaints were related to her preferences not to the quality of the RV. Maybe she ran into a high pressure sales person who sold her something she really did not want. It is not the fault of the Ascape.

    • @DIYOutdoorLife
      @DIYOutdoorLife  Год назад +4

      I agree, and we try to present it that way, I hope that came across. She didn’t make a single complaint about quality or craftsmanship, she just ended up with the wrong camper for her.
      Thanks for tuning in!

    • @nicholasproietto2500
      @nicholasproietto2500 11 месяцев назад

      She made the choice to buy it. It was her own fault then if she came away disappointed.
      I don't care how high pressure a salesman might be. If I don't like something, I say no and walk away.

    I have a 2019 but it's the plus model. I took a 2 month trip through Canada and USA last August and loved it. Mine has excellent ventilation as both windows open up completely, has solar, SU charging plugs, big fridge and toilet. While camping sometimes encounter bad weather, rain, wind and being able to cook inside works great for me. It tows wonderfully with my jeep renegade trailhawk. Like the fact that is narrow as my jeep so don't have to stress in narrow roads and don't need mirror extenders. It has excellent insulation, there can be a huge storm outside and you're cosy and warm inside. I also rather camp in state parks and boondocks, but it's nice to hook up occasionally. The only downside to mine is that it is uncomfortable to get in and out of bed. It's tiny so either one cooks while other seats (have to organize yourself). Overall I love mind but it's my 4th RV (used to have a 25 footer). Nice review! Hope she can exchange for something more suitable for her needs. But in general I have found out it's all about compromise. Lighter, smaller has less options, bigger more comfortable but more expensive to tow etc

    We got a 2021 Grand Ascape ST and have used it once. We use Japanese futons to sleep on. Our windows open further, we have a vent on the roof, wet bath. It’s 1800 pounds nice air flow, and we pull it with a Toyota Sienna rated at 2000 pounds. So far we love it and are heading out for our 2nd trip this weekend. We are only going to hookups. We also have usb hookups.

    I love my 2017 Aliner Classic Off-Road edition with two hard dormers. It’s super compact when towing and backing up and it folds up quick and easy to se up camp. I never cook inside except to heat water or use the microwave. I use a garden sprayer to wash dishes and never use the sink or fill the tanks. I keep the fan on in the summer. The inside trailer lets me pack all my camping gear and it has a large bed/couch in back and a twin/dinette/couch in front. The back bed I keep smaller if it’s just me and queen when my husband is with me. The front bed sleeps my grandkids, and when they get bigger I can put them in the big bed and I’ll sleep in the smaller bed. Even my 73 year old mom was impressed with it when we went from Washington state to Arizona last spring. Since it’s so small I just use a small electric heater when I’m at a campground.

    The take away is that we learn from our experience. My first travel trailer was what I could afford. It was crap. The second travel trailer was a NuCamp 320 S and it was awesome. Never had any issues and was well made. But, I thought I would like a class C. I was wrong. I sold my Van and the NuCamp. I miss the trailer, but not the Chevy Express van. It’s been gone a year and my right knee is still damaged. We bought a Subaru Ascent with a 5000 towing capacity but no trailer. Big maybe. We might tent camp but.. getting older means that solutions are more difficult and buying comfort is tricky. Thanks for the informative video.

    Nice review of the Aliner Ascape. Before I bought my 2019 Geo Pro 12SRK (same concept as your Bushwhacker) I looked at pretty much the same Aliner minus the air conditioner. My unit the outside kitchen but I cooked at the picnic table or on my portable table. If the weather is not nice, rain, wind and heavy bugs etc. I setup my Clam Quickset 6 ft by 6 ft to cook in. I bought it after watching Cosmo's review and love it. The reason I never went for the Aliner was the price, way too much for what you were getting. I'm in my 4th season with the Geo Pro and plan on keeping it for many years to come. Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it.

    I have a newer subaru forester and I'm a truck driver with decades of on the road experience. The forester has a 1500# towing capacity. Wich means realistically to avoid serious problems with transmission or crashes, towing with the forester I would feel safe towing max of 1300. This way it still has plenty of power to power through and safely stop in rainy or unsafe weather conditions. Towing over that your asking for a problem. Vehicles towing at your towing max capacity is very dangerous

    I love the solo female videos since that's kinda me now. LOL.
    I just bought a 1998 Fleetwood vision pacearrow Class A with 44k miles for 10k. I put 1k into it with a complete tune-up and accessories that I wanted for it. I didn't have a lot of money and I also had no idea how to drive one. I wanted one that was cheap to register, insure and with no payments. If I beat it up, oh well and it has enough room for me and my 4 kids.
    It is old but it runs good and it's made like a tank. It seems to be made better than some of the newer trailers and RVs.
    That said, I am going to run this for a bit, get used to driving an RV (tail swing etc) and give it to one of my family members in need. Then I'm going to either buy a newer used class c or a truck/ trailer and hit the road to see the USA with my 4 kids. I have 2 disabled adult daughters and 2 sons who are young teens. I'm a newly divorced woman, just out of a very toxic, 30 year marriage and it feels wonderful!!! I love these channels because I am learning so much from equipment to safety to park locations!

Without, the car brakes will be gone thru much faster. The Civic has no issues pulling it, as I drive slower than your avg driver. Would like to hear if the owner sold or kept this one. Hmm. . . $20,000 for a used camper that small, with a bunch of stuff she has no need for and it's for 2 people and a dog and she doesn't like it anymore because it's to small, and filled with things that just take up space. She seems quite experienced at camping, both in a tent and in a camper prior to this camper. I think by now she would have known better than to have bought this camper. Not to mention pulling it with a Subaru. She's lucky to find something with solid walls she can stand up in that it will pull. She should just gut it and start over to build it to fit what she wants.

    Well, the Outback is , or used to be, the only one that was rated for towing...and Outbacks can tow up to 3,000 lbs until about 2019, when Subaru changed it to 2,800 lbs for Standard Outbacks and 3,500 for the Wilderness Trim. I don't know how old her Forester is...but they typically can't go above 1,500 lbs. so she is already at capacity w/out any additional gear.
    So, really, she should have done basic research to confirm her vehicle's towing range before looking at and then buying any trailer.
    So common to have people just buy a Trailer and then ruin their Transmissions & Engines. Completely avoidable.
