Thanks for these wonderful images. They make me feel sad and nostalgic. My father was born in Bad Hersfeld in 1956 in a house facing the gates of the army barracks (Huhnfelder Strasse 68). He passed seven years ago, and my grandfather, who outlived him, passed just two weeks ago. I grew up in the Netherlands but this town has been my second home for all my life. Now that my last remaining relative there has died it feels like my connection to that place is slipping through my fingers. My father and grandfather always spoke fondly of the 'amis'. I think there was an army kid there who had a Porsche who would sometimes take my dad for a ride. My grandfather was an architect and he built the church in that neighbourhood, which served many of the soldiers there. These days the town has lost a bit of its lustre but it is still a beautiful place to watch the seasons change. My grandfather passed died at the peak of fall. The trees were a like a sea of fire. When we buried him 10 days later the first snow fell and we could see the city covered in white. I see it as his last attempt to show us all how beautiful our hometown is and could be. Those two men were gentle, and strong and they showed me how to be happy and kind. I miss them dearly.

Loved watching your video of Bad Hersfeld. Reminded me so much serving there from 1965-1968 with Delta Company 54th Engr. Bn. My squad room overlooked the parade field where frequently choppers landed. The most notable memory of the 14th A/C was the post Sgt. Major that looked like a walrus, he was a mean ass and you were scared to walk past him even. Bad Hersfeld was a great place to serve and the E.M. Club ruled. Somewhere I have a lot of B&W photos that I took and developed at the photo club in the Social Club outside the back gate by the chapel. Used to watch sheep being herded out the back from my window. Good times. Never forget midnight Alerts and going in the field for Alert bivouacks with the 14th A/C. Again, loved your numerous videos from Bad Hersfeld, definitely miss the brat wursts in town and the Rod & Gun Club off post. Blessings to ya Dietz, thanks for sharing. D. Hope/Boston

Major I bet your are talking about Bad Kick Ass Jackman, I've see him lock heels of officers. I was in HHQ in the same building that Jackman slept in. Wow ... that was a trip down Memory Lane :) I was asked today by my boss to create a short presentation to introduce myself to my newly arrived colleagues. I was born in Bad Hersfeld in 1961 and tried to find some old pictures online ... and came across your little video. My grandparents lived only 200 metres away on the other side of the road from McPheeters Barracks. I remember well standing by the fence and the lovely GIs handing us chewing gum and other sweets :D We left Bad Hersfeld in 1968 and moved near Frankfurt, but I will never forget my Kindergarten time and first year of school there. Anna, I don't k now when you were last there, here is a video of my last visit June 2009. To me the village has lost its charm, not saying this in a negative way, Today it's looks too modern.
