  • The Rainbow Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the Shibaura district in Minato-ku, Tokyo, and the Odaiba district (Minato-ku, Odaiba, and Koto-ku, Ariake). Construction began in 1987 (Showa 62) and was completed in 1993 (Heisei 5), with the bridge opening on August 26 of the same year. With a total length of approximately 800 meters, the two-story structure has the Metropolitan Expressway No. 11 Odaiba Line above, and the new transportation system "Yurikamome" in the center below, with general roads and sidewalks on either side. The name "Rainbow Bridge" means "bridge of the rainbow" and was chosen by public submission. The official name of the bridge is "Tokyo Port Connecting Bridge."
The Rainbow Promenade is a pedestrian walkway installed on the lower level of the Rainbow Bridge along the Rinko Road Kailan Line. The open hours are from 9 AM to 9 PM between April and October, and 10 AM to 6 PM between November and March (last entry is 30 minutes before the end time). The third Monday of every month is a regular holiday when pedestrians cannot cross the bridge, but if it is a public holiday, the regular holiday is changed to the following day. The Rainbow Promenade may also be closed due to bad weather, events, or maintenance. To access the Rainbow Promenade, use your feet at the Odaiba entrance and an elevator at the Shibaura entrance. It takes about 20-30 minutes to cross the bridge. There are no toilets, shops, or vending machines along the way, but benches are available. The anchorage observation and rest facilities have been closed since becoming free.
There are two routes: the north promenade (North Route), which offers views of central Tokyo, Harumi, and Toyosu districts, and the south promenade (South Route), which offers views of Tokyo Bay and the Rinkai Fukutoshin. Due to the Yurikamome tracks in the center of the roadway, the scenery on the opposite side of the road is mostly obscured, and it is not possible to change routes since crossing the road is not possible, except for a walkway near the P31 pier on the Odaiba side of the bridge (formerly, it could be crossed at the Odaiba Anchorage). Bicycle riding is prohibited, and bicycles must be either pushed on a dedicated rental cart, or stored in bike bags and carried as baggage.
For crossing the bridge by pushing a bicycle, it has been specified that the south promenade (South Route) must be used going from the Shibaura entrance to the Odaiba entrance, while the north promenade (North Route) must be used going from the Odaiba entrance to the Shibaura entrance. If the promenade is closed due to bad weather, it is not possible to cross the bridge by pushing a bicycle.
