My best 450 miles is 42.7. My average is 32-33 mpg and my typical month I fuel up once a month. Love this truck!!! Highly recommended if you don’t tow/haul anything super heavy.
I have a 22 silverado 3.0. Best torque feel and most comfortable ride ever. I average 24+ mpg daily driving and 31 on hwy. I am a certified diesel mechanic for 38 years and mostly have worked on cummins over the years. GM overall has built a winner with the 3.0 especially in todays EPA regulations,it is a great design with a lot of thought put into it..45,000 miles and counting. Pulls a 20' bass boat with ease.
How does it feel on acceleration when you’re going 50 and above? I’ve seen off a stop they’re pretty quick but how are they when you need to get on it after you’re already rolling?
@Joshua Sherrill not the fastest on the highway, but it will get on down the road especially when pulling a boat. There is a slight lag but not bad especially considering we're only talking a 3.0 l getting great MPG.
@@tonypickens5920that oil belt is the only flaw… will have to pull the whole transmission out just to check it or change it.. $$$$. Wish they would have just used a chain.
@dcman4902 agreed, but the belt does contribute to the quietness and smoothness of the engine. GM is not sure yet actually how long it will last. Original estimates say 150k but they have test engines with over 250k with no belt faliure.
I have a 21 Silverado RST, 3 L diesel I LOVE it! It’s smooth, it’s sweet, it’s comfortable, it gets great mileage . I’ve made two trips from Omaha Nebraska to North Carolina, hauling trailers. One with the 16 foot covered trailer, the other, wish an open car carrier, with a 2005 full-size Buick, LeSabre. Going to the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, I did not even know that trailer was behind me. The tow/haul mode on this truck is incredible!!!
I hit 25k on my 2021 silverado 3.0!!! No mechanical issue thus far. It does not burn oil & def usage is minimal. Averaging 32-33 mpg & i drive 700 miles a week with 1 fillup. Low end torque is amazing . I would recommend this engine to everyone.
It scares me a little that some people are saying they have no oil burn and some claim to burn a quart or more over 5k mile oil change intervals. It's either designed to burn oil or it's not, right? I get different driving patterns, different usage, etc, but if I were to get one of these, my OCD would drive me nuts if I got one of the burners. Lol
I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0 diesel and change oil every 5,000 miles and has never used any oil between oil changes. If not towing I go though about 4 gallons of def fluid at 5,000 miles also.
I've had the 22 a little over a month, and wow! Due to my father having dementia, I've had to make several trips from Maryland to Detroit Michigan! I never need to stop for fuel or DEF. I just had the first oil change and this truck continues to surprise me. You assessment is 100% on target, thank you for keeping me informed on things I didn't think of. Oh, and the one Month mileage is 6500.
I have a 2022 GMC AT4 3.0 Duramax. Purchased Sept. 2022 and have 8K miles on it. I have to say I am over the moon in love with the truck. I have owned I don't know how may 5.3 gas engine trucks and the 3.0 Duramax blows them out of the water. No question. For me, towing a bass boat and driving back and forth to work, the fuel mileage is outstanding. I live in WV and I consistently get 26-28 mpg back and forth to work. In warmer weather I have seen 30-31 mpg. Towing a full size bass boat from WV to TN the truck produced 22 mpg. No oil usage seen to this point. DEF added one time. Thus far, no complaints. Definitely would buy the truck again. If you do not need a big diesel....I dont think this truck will disappoint.
,I have a 2024 Silverado 3 litre Duramax plus a 2022 Ram Eco Diesel .The wife and I like the Ram better. The only thing a little better on the 3 litre Duramax is the mileage.Ram is quieter better ride and more user friendly.I do think the GM Duramax is a more dependable engine then the Eco diesel.
It’s 2023 not 1973. We should not be having to add oil to our engines in between oil changes in my opinion. My daily is a 2015 Cummins and it basically uses no oil in between my 7500 mile services.
My 3.0 duramax has 98,600 miles. Went in last Friday, possible engine failure. Should know more tomorrow but it has burned oil at a consumption rate of about 1 quart every 5,000 miles since it hit the 30,000 mile mark. Would be happy to share what the diagnosis is when I find out. Genuinely loved this truck, but GM says they will put a new "reman" engine in it if needed. I have heard rumors about crankshaft and something to do with bolts "backing out". Could be the cause of the oil burn, idk
I’ve recently purchased a used 2021 Sierra SLT X31 with the 3.0L diesel engine. Truck has 85000 miles on it now. Fuel mileage is great getting 22 - 38 mpg. Has awesome torque and power. I’ve not noticed any real excess oil usage. If you have ever owned a vehicle with a diesel engine they will use oil. If you allow your engine to idle for long periods of time it will use more oil. This truck has more options on it than I will ever need. Electric everything even the parking brake. Heated and air condition seats and very comfortable for king trips. I hope all of you come to enjoy this truck.
Hey Tim, Nice 6 month review on your new truck. Here is a non paid or sponsored idea on your oil availability issue. I use Amsoil synthetic oil and it is delivered to my door within a couple of days ! Yes, they do carry 0-20 for your duramax. The oil is $13.39 qt. Or 10.19 if you sign up with a membership. I have used this oil since “79” after my neighbor ( engineer at Air research aka Garret) recommended it to me after they tested the oil. Amsoil was first developed for fighter jet engines. I’ve never had an engine failure oil related or otherwise. Stow your extra oil bottles in the rear seatback storage compartments! Lastly, try your seat heaters on low or medium to soften the seat cushion as well as your low Back muscles on your trip! Have a great safe road trip! Ron
I'm 4 weeks into owning my 2023 Sierra 1500 At4 LZO and I absolutely love it. Just turned over 1000 miles with 4 longer trips and a bunch of short city trips and am getting 28mpg average and trips with over 31mpg+ on I-90 in eastern WA doing ~74mph. Love the drivetrain and the feel of the diesel.
Do you have mud terrain good year tires or AT's? I have achieved 30mpg before but a recent trip to Florida and back from Midwest I was only able to average 26 with my AT4. That was running cruise religiously and mph in the low 70's. If I run below 69 mph it makes a substantial difference. Thinking of removing the mud terrain tires and going to an AT tire.
I have used AMSOIL oil in my 2021 Chevy 3.0L. They always have the oil in stock and I feel the engine runs alot smoother and more efficient on this oil. I have 35,000 miles and live in Nevada, near Lake Tahoe and I average 28 MPG. I would use AMSOIL on your engine
I just turned 1000 miles on my 2023 Gmc 1500 Denali 3.0 and immediately put Amsoil diesel 0-20 in. What difference and I use Amsoil in all 5 cars I own!
I have 22 Trailboss and just finished a roundtrip drive from Oregon-Alabama, over 5k miles and burned basically no oil. I had to fill DEF tank up twice but this was driving 75-90 mph the entire trip. Also fighting strong winds through the Midwest. I now have 11k miles on it and still love it. I also have a complaint about the wireless phone charger bc mine rarely connects to my phone to charge. Rarely have the CarPlay issue also. I was more than pleased by averaging 26mpg during that road-trip driving the truck extremely hard. No issues towing enclosed trailer with 2 snowmobiles up and down a mountain either
I have the GMC 1500 with the 3.0. I have had a lot of trucks, mostly with V8's. I feel like I never put fuel in this 3.0. The fuel economy for a full size 4x4, is incredible. And the torque curve is silky smooth and fun! My engine doesn't use a drop of oil. It's weird how yours does. As for where you get your oil, I switched to Amsoil long ago, and I have all of my oil shipped to my door. They have the 0w20, and it has the dexos rating.
@@smallfringeminority6499 Out of the 6 of my other buddies that have the 3.0, exactly zero of them are having problems. One of them has 140k miles on it. I am not saying none have problems. But the vast majority are problem free. I would like to know where you are getting your information. You say "ALOT" (I think you mean "a lot").. Another guy that helps me coach my boys ball team is a service manager at our local GM dealership. He tells me they are great engines. Rarely a problem with them. He would know, they sell hundreds of them. YMMV.
@@braddsnI don’t see why a new truck needs to be using oil. Maybe on the initial break-in but after 2000 miles it should not be using oil. For me, that’s a big hassle to have to worry about oil level. In this day of technology the truck should tell you when it needs oil. I like the chrome look. That’s what I grew up with. Thanks for the review.
I have a 2023 LTZ Z71 Duramax; I love it. Bought it new June 1st have just under 6k miles. Live in Florida; getting 31 and 32 mpg on trips. Range of over 700 miles. No issues with oil, but I did buy some on Amazon to have. I got an early oil change at around 5500 miles only because I had to take in for a tire pressure monitor issue. From what I can see so far; my DEF will only need tipped off when I change the oil; used a couple gallons. Love it for all the reasons you commented on!
I have the 2023 3.0 in pearl white ltz . Love the tailgate assist. Lift up 2 inches and it takes over. Love the interior. Truck is smooth and omg 30 mpg . I had a 2015 2500 HD and was getting 13 mpg on my trip to work. I now get 24 going to work. 30 mpg on interstate. I have the leather ltz seats. They are pretty good. Last but not least towing. Can't believe how well this tows. I pull a 20 ft equipment hauler with an l2501 kubota tractor with loader and 6ft bush hog . Pulls just fine
I love my LZO! The mileage is incredible! I had a 2014 RAM Cummins Dually that I pulled a 42’ fiver. Bought a diesel Super C RV and sold the RAM and bought a Jeep Gladiator as a toad. Just wasn’t happy without a pickup so I bought a 2023 Trailboss that I can still flat tow and it gets great mileage! It’s amazing to have a 1/2 ton with that amount of horsepower and torque that I can still haul and tow most of what you need in a weekend basis! Great motor and truck!
I think the oil consumption is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. All it will take is for people to get lazy and stop checking it. The big question is, where is the oil going? Is it on the cylinder walls getting past the rings? That is a fixable problem the engineers should address.
And this lawsuit happy society is one reason everything is so high. Add a little more to the sticker price to cover any possible expense of litigation.
@radoliz2 13 hours ago Oil consumption is happening to those who do not observe the break in period correctly! With 0w-20 oils, fuel dilution of oil takes place rather rapidly. Every time you give it WOT during the first 2,000 miles your adding unburned fuel to the engine oil. If you let the oil level get below add and keep driving it. You ruin the break-in of the rings especially the oil rings. Then you have a oil user the rest of its life. Two quarts low is one quart to many. You should keep a eye on the oil level for the first 5,000 miles at every fill up. It is not caused by the manufacturers. It is caused by the owners, thinking it shouldn't use oil and never keeping a eye on the level. And not observing the break-in period of no full throttle, or holding steady speeds for long periods of time. READ THE MANUAL and practice what it says. Keep the oil topped up, and look for fuel dilution in the engine oil. Sometimes it might be best to get a oil change at 3,000 mile mark to be sure it is not diluted.
It's low quality oil. The AC Delco/Mobil oils are too thin for the engine. With the Amsoil DP020, people are only getting consumption of 1 qt per 6000 mi or less. Similar could be accomplished with Ravenol LDD 0w-20 which is also a bit thicker, or Liqui-Moly 6610, which while it doesn't meet Dexos D per se, it meets OPEL OV 040 1547 - A20 which is the European spec for the smaller 1.5 and 2.0 engines of the same design. Any oil meeting that spec will meet Dexos D and be superior in viscosity and shear stability. Liqui-Moly 6610 can be ordered at NAPA in 5L jugs. Don't know about the Ravenol yet. I use the Amsoil in 1.6 Cruze diesels after converting them to the LM2 timing chain tensioner. It ends up thicker than the original 5w-30 did after an oil change. And no more tensioner issues. There's a reason they changed the spec to the special 0w-20 on the 1.6 in Europe years after the last one came off the assembly line.
Where we live in Idaho diesel is at mid-grade gas prices. So really the only extra cost to running a diesel is the DEF. Especially when you get a 50% fuel mpg increase vs a half ton gas, you are actually saving money by running this diesel. As for oil changes I always do my own. So 1 to 2 extra quarters....not a big deal when you get all the other benefits of this engine. I've scanned the comments for this vid and numerous others on this truck and most people don't have as much oil consumption as you do Tim. Also seems most people seem to get even a little bit better mpg's. Great vid. I know people who have this truck and they say it would be the last vehicle of their's they would sell. Keep em coming.
Just hit 8 months with my Duramax High Country. Beat truck engine combo ever. Smooth, quiet, efficient. Is so quiet I have parked and left running without realizing I didn’t hit the push button. Best trip mpg has been 32.6 over 740 mile trip. My averaging mixed driving has been a little over 25. The 10 speed auto is a dream. Looks have grown on me and really like how the truck sites. I haven’t had the same oil issues but have over 16k on the truck so it does improve with break in.
Excellent review! I drive a 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 with the 3 liter. I think it is by far, one of the best drivetrain combinations on a half-ton in the current market. I’ve towed light loads, heavy loads, gone cross-country, traveled with the family, and twice a week I do a 120-mile commute. I haven’t noticed oil consumption between changes, nor have I had to fill up DEF that frequently. I love my truck, and the 3.0 has a lot to do with it.
I enjoyed your review. I have the 2022 GMC Sierra with SLT trim. Last year we did a 9400 mile road trip and averaged 28.6 mpg. The truck is super smooth and makes me feel very confident in all driving situations. I have had a few glitches, but nothing that is a show stopper. The oil issue you've spoken about hasn't been too bad on this, but it isn't the LZ0 like yours, I have the LM2. Hope you enjoy your trip.
I have a 2022 Silverado LTZ Premium Z71 with the 6.2 engine. It has the sunroof, multi flex tailgate and all the driver safety devices. Black and a lot of chrome, and I get so many compliments. After about 10k miles, I took off the biggest muffler I have ever had on a vehicle, and it made a huge difference in power. I love my truck, but my next one will have the 3.0 diesel.
I love my 3.0 sierra slt! I've been checking my oil because I've gone on some pretty long road trips and thankfully have not had any issues with oil "consumption". I'm able to drive from Odessa to Mcallen Texas on one tank! That's about 8 hours going mostly 75mph! It's freaking awesome!
I have had 5 diesel trucks, all Dodge 3500's, and never had any of them burn any oil. I had one F-350 and it leaked oil, and that is why I got rid of it. Thank you for the update. Glad I have the 6.2 now in my Trail Boss.
Good video. Replaced my 2021 Chevy Silverado RST 3.0 with a new 2023 Silverado, LTZ, Z71, Texas Addition with the new 3.0. Just hope I can see the 30 mpg on the highway. The '21 did not use oil but will have to remember to keep an eye on it. The DEF usage in the '21 was not much. Regular driving maybe 1 gal every 3-4K miles.
2021 AT4 here. Runs so well with no issues that we bought a 2023 Yukon Diesel as well. The power difference is quite noticeable, The Sierra is really quick on power, while the Yukon gets it on a little later, but the Yukon really hauls ass and comfortable at 85.
Great review Tim! I agree with everything you mentioned. However I've not had any oil issues in my 23 Trail Boss. Mileage was definitely a driving factor in my decision and this truck does not disappoint. I drove from my hometown in Wyoming to my house in Salt Lake City, UT. I filled up before leaving. Traveled 195 miles with an average of 28 mpg. My fuel gauge only went down an 8th of a tank. My mind was blown. 🤯 Best truck I've ever owned. It's one purchase I'm glad I made.
Just rolled over 21000 on my 2020 3.0 LT Z71 6.5' bed, and, except for needing to replace the trans wiring harness (under warranty), I've had zero issues with the truck. My lease is up in a couple months and I'll definitely be buying it out.
I almost always get at least 700 miles to a tank sometimes I can go 750 miles to a tank. The truck has shown over 800 miles of range a few times. It’s been a great truck, I’ve had mine for 2 years now. I use AMSOIL 0w-20 diesel oil in it.
Great review, Tim. I have a 2022 Silverado with the LM2, and I consistently get 27-28 mpg. I LOVE this truck. I do have one suggestion......Dude you can talk fast, so please slow down!! Some of your words run together so much that I have to rewind and try to figure out what you just said. I'm just saying. You always have great information that is very valuable for truck buyers who want to be well-educated about their purchase. Thanks for another great review!
Tim, I really like the look of your truck. If I could afford a half ton truck the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 3.0L diesel would be one of my top choices.
Wife bought a GMC Yukon with the Duramax in it. Love this engine and transmission combo. Milage is great!!! DEF is not a problem. Lucky for me i have several trucks , dumptruck and equipment that run it, so buying it in a 50+ gallon drum is cheap. Just recently learned that the oil is impossible to find other than through a dealer.
So after looking into the oil situation, there are good options. The separation from Oils calling for Dexos D - they have an ACEA C5 approval (which can be found on the newer Mobil 1 Dexos D approved oil). The ACEA C5 standard is a European standard for oils approved in both gas Engines, and light duty diesel engines. Any Walmart location will have 0w-20 oils containing the ECEA C5 standards. They may not identify as Dexos D, but will match the same standards found in the approved Mobil 1 Dexos D. I’ve been using Castrol Edge “Unlock Maximum Performance”, and my truck has been running great. Definitely not wanting to start a debate. We spend good money on these vehicles, and I’d suggest for people to come towards their own conclusions. Just thought I’d share my experience, considering Dexos D is non existent in my area.
my f150 with the 5.0 had major oil consumption problems with the 5w20, I switched to 5w30, zero oil consumption issues. I still want to get one of these, I like the better fuel mileage.
I have the 2022 Silverado 3.0 rwd Duramax. I love it! I have a great shell station near me with good diesel prices and def at the pump. I have 14k miles and have added def 2x. $13 + $16=$29, I think that's pretty good. MPG, the exterior, and roomy interior are top notch. I hover around 28mpg.
I have a 2020 Silverado RST 3.0 Duramax. Average 26.7 MPG since purchase, very often over 30 MPG and highest 40 MPG. Never any oil usage issues with 57,000 miles.
I have little over 9000 miles on my lzo. I have about 3000 miles on the previous oil change and my oil level is at the half mark right now. I do pull a small fifth wheel camper sometimes with it, so it might be burning more oil because of that. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this truck. Also... diesel prices are dropping and in some areas it is cheaper than gas. I hope that trend continues.😊
@@OverlandOrange It's the first time I checked it since changing the oil at 6000 miles. The first 6000 it was at the full mark when I changed it. It has Mobile 1 in it now.
Hey, Tim. I bought a High Country probably 1 month after you did. So far, with the exception of 1 P0402, it’s been flawless. Just like Mickey Ds, I’m luvin it.
Bought a 2020 RST 3.0 new in August 2020 . Love it. Avr. fuel is 8.5 l/100km. change oil every 8000km or so and buy my DEF fluid to re-fill at that time. That's it.
I found a hack with the wireless charger. If you can find something about a half inch thick and place it at the bottom of the charger it will work with right case. It's almost like the charger is too high for the iphone and it needs to be lifted just a little. Works for me every time now!
DEF consumption is usually pretty linear with fuel consumption. The only explanation for it using less DEF is that the EGR is running at a higher duty cycle to reduce NOx production. Soooo.... driving it very lightly or not towing. Could also be a function of cold outdoor temperatures (or not). That said... the DEF consumption on my 22' really is something I rarely think about. Couple of jugs from Walmart a few times a year.
Great review Tim!! I agree with everything you covered. I have a ‘23 LT Trail Boss with the LZ0 and absolutely love it. The only dislike I would add is the windshield wiper control. You can’t just tap a lever to clear the windshield. You have to locate the control on the arm and twist it. I know it’s very minor, but it bugs 😂
Nice! My 2.8 Duramax Z71 gets 25 city and 29-32 Highway...depending on how I drive. I love the baby max....I'd love to get my hands on a 3.0l Silverado. But they are way to spendy for a retired guy!
@@16vjohnny I'm currently running Falken WildPeak A/T....Great tire for general driving and off road. I go to Montana every summer and it gets some real off road time....Here in middle TN they perform quite well in the rain and ice/snow when we get it.
I have a 2022, refresh 3 litre diesel, on my second oil change now, it has not burned any oil . Just before my first oil change I checked the oil and it was down maybe a quarter of a quart. It was at 7500 miles
Love my 2020 Silverado diesel. So quiet and smooth. It’s great how quiet the diesels have gotten. I’ve had a new diesels since ‘02 Golf, ‘06-2 & ’12 Jettas, ‘17 Colorado and finally the 2020. Still have an 06 Jetta for a commuter and had to shut it down in the drive through to hear them. Also the problem with the digital rear view mirror is you can’t see or tell if emergency vehicles are come up behind you sometimes. The refresh rate of the monitor is the same rate as their LED flashing lights. Sometimes you can’t tell the difference.
Tim, I bought a 2020 Silverado 3.0 LTZ 4X4 . This morning driving to work the odometer turned 95,000 miles. No oil consumption issue. The only problem I had was the front cover oil seal had to be replaced and had an exhaust leak. I’m averaging 25 to 26 miles per gallon. I’m very impressed with the truck.
I agree, DEF isn't that expensive and if you go to the truck stops they usually have DEF at the pump and it's easy peasy to fill then. It isn't that expensive and is required. I don't agree with EPA regulations but it's what you have to deal with. Or spend 10k to delete and probably never recover that money in fuel/DEF savings.
Everybody complained about cats and smog pumps in the 70s and 80's. Everybody complained about EGR and EVAP in the 90's after OBD II, everybody will find reasons to disagree and complain about any emissions regulations, but I also remember getting gassed out every day in the bus lanes in school from all those idling 6BT's and cat 3208's and nobody wants to go back to those days.
@@kodyw2357DEF is way less of an issue than regens on the DPF. I think people don't understand how the emissions system works and thinks DEF is used during regen. EGRs on diesels are also bad but I like that the new LZ0 Duramax uses exhaust gasses after the SCR for its EGR. Should increase the longevity on these engines.
AC-Delco PN 10-9177 for your oil. My AC-Delco supplier has it in stock at $7.49 per QT. Castrol EDGE and Mobil 1 also have the approved oil for your Duramax.
I was able to find the Mobil 1 ESP X2 Dexos D at Autozone in the Midwest for my LM2. It’s a bit pricey, but it fell under promotion they were running so I got it cheaper.
I have a 2023 Suburban 3L diesel. Live in California. Driven multiple times to Northern Canada and Florida Uses no oil. Have 25,000 miles on it. Best 450 says 64.3mpg. 55 mph tailwind on the Alberta prairie helped a little bit. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
I really like the new design inline 6 engines that put the catalyst and DPF under the hood. Is going to reduce the thefts quite a bit. Also taking the EGR after the DPF and SCR is a plus. My Ecodiesel days may be numbered. I am debating ordering this truck, a Jeep Gladiator, or a Ram Warlock 3.6L gas for simplicity. Whatever it is, it will possibly be my last new vehicle into retirement. The spec oil is an issue that people would want to know more about. My Ecodiesel uses 5w40 T6 Rotella, never needs oil added in 10k miles between changes. My wife's Cummins does not need oil added between oil changes either, using the same oil. My gas 3.6L Dodge Durango uses no oil in 10k miles between oil changes, using 0w20 oil. If the T6 Rotella can meet all emissions needs. I would run that oil, if I buy the Chevy diesel.
Nice, to the point, comprehensive short term review. I agree with you that DEF is a no issue but I guess people need something to pick at. With regards to oil consumption I’m also with you and still scratching my head. I’m no diesel expert but I have never had any vehicle that burned or used oil (not even a 1/2 quart) when mechanically sound. Having a service bulletin stating its normal just feels like a CYA for a bit of design or component selection issue. I wonder why my previous GM, Toyota vehicles never used oil even when towing yet this is normal for 3.0????
Have a 2020 Chevy 1500 RST with the Max 3.0 and the only oilI have to put in is the 7qts of AMSOIL at the oil change, just turned 44,000 miles and 28 around town 33 on the highway and towing a 6000 RV usually 17 to 18 mpg. My old 2010 5.3 would get 17. to 18 on the highway. Great truck, quiet, and rides really nice. You must have bought a Monday truck. .
Great summary on the truck, Tim! I enjoyed hearing your personal opinions from your list as I have been building a list myself. Most of what you brought up for concerns are some concerns of mine as well and likely many others. I enjoyed seeing what your truck was equipped with and how you used it. Your opinion on DEF is how I believe GM hoped the owners would think. Thanks for sharing !
I've got a 2023 Chevy Silverado LTZ with the Duramax diesel... hands down best truck I have owned. I love this thing. We keep a first aid kit and tow shackles in the back seat storage btw :) I saw a WARN WINCH?!?! You gotta do some videos of that. I've been aching to throw a discreet bumper and winch on it but haven't had much luck with the local shops.
2020 AT4 3.0L I just rolled 40,000 miles. Monitoring and changing my oil I’ve never had to add oil between oil changes. Very unfortunate your dealing with that of oil consumption.
I can almost guarantee this is the reason behind the 7 quart capacity. GM planned for some usage. There's no other reason for a 3.0L engine to have a 7 quart capacity. But yeah, drive more and worry less.
@@donhappel9566 I’ve been a Ford guy my whole life, this is my first GM truck and I’ve been impressed. Seems like a much better value for money than a F150. This LT is nicer than my last Lariat by a pretty good margin. Curious the reasons you went with the Chev. I think for me it was the discontinuation of the diesel F150, and I was pissed.
@@16vjohnny That's it exactly - the 3.0/10spd. I use the truck for work and occasionally to tow my crawler on longer trips (8500 lbs on the trailer). I've got about 30K miles on it since picking it up in July - mostly highway of course. The economy is 100% the selling feature for me. Ford's hybrid has tons of power but I just don't care about 0-60 for a work truck and the hybrid does nothing for highway economy so I wouldn't even see much of a payback there. The Lightning? Forget it - It's miles from meeting my needs and doesn't even come in a work truck platform; just the kid-hauler max-cab/min-bed setup. Over-all I've been pretty happy with the truck though I'm starting to have some transmission issues I need to get sorted. There's a GM campaign on that specifically so hopefully they won't just me the 'they all do that' or 'couldn't duplicate the problem' bs.
It’s not the issue of actually having to buy DEF. It’s the issue after warranty, the massive costs of DEF heads, scr, and after treatment filter costs. They ruin the entire purpose and benefit of a diesel engine, kills the reliability and longevity.
Have a 22 3.0 with 40,000 miles. Change oil every 5,000 miles and have never added oil. Add 2 1/2 gal. Def when indicator is 1/3 tank left and comes close to full.
My opinion on oil loss is how it reflects on overall engine build quality. I have never had a Toyota engine that burned oil. I have had several domestic vehicles (not all) over the years that did, but none of them were brand new. The service bulletin from the engineers seems like a cop out.
@@kevinjohnson4490 - That oil consumption was Awful !!! That motor needed something, perhaps all new Valve Stem Seals, then piston rings... The only good (?) thing about this is you never had to do an Oil Change, because you were adding new oil so soon... Just change the oil filter...
I have a 2022 1/2 LTZ with every option. I have averaged 27-30mpg with no issues. I don’t tow anything with mine. Put 6k miles on it, bought it with 6k on it. No oil consumption issues with mine. No issues with my wireless charger as I have a thinner case. Also I have only had to put def in it once so far. So I don’t see that as an issue at all. I just use the ones at the pump to put it in. I drive a F450 for work and know all the places to get it. I love the truck, plenty of power , rides amazing and lots of room. My favorite things is the drop down tale gate, I’m to old it be hoping in and out the back now days 😅.
Theres another guy on RUclips that owns the same truck. He said his used a lot of oil too. He said there was a faulty valve cover or something like that. It fixed the oil consumption issue fyi.
I like a lot about this truck but the amount of oil consumption is a deal breaker for me. Also the fact that you have to go to the dealer to get oil is ridiculous.
Well for my last oil change I went to AutoZone which sells Mobil 1 ESP X2 DEXOS D oil. Or you could order the AC DELCO DEXOS D from ROCK AUTO for like $6.65 per quart, just need to plan ahead. Absolutely no need to go to a dealer for oil.
Great review. I have a 21 Silverado. I just passed 100K on the odometer. The oil consumption hasn't changed. I use a quart between each oil change. Other than that i love the truck.
The oil consumption issue is very problematic. It will not get better. Other videos have already documented that it only worsens as the engine ages. It's a design problem that should be alarming for any potential owner.
It's not a design problem, but rather an oil problem. In Europe they have Opel engines based on the exact same design but with less cylinders, a 1.5 3 cylinder and 2.0 4 cylinder. They spec a 0w-20 meeting the OPEL OV 040 1547 - A20 spec. These engines have no issues burning oil, on longer drain intervals, and running high speeds on the Autobahn. This oil also corrects some of the timing chain tensioner issues on the earlier 1.6 CDTI that they are based on. Difference being the oils meeting that Opel spec are much thicker for a 0w-20 than the AC Delco and Mobil Dexos D oils are. Some oils meet Dexos D as well, others don't, only because they don't want to pay the licensing fee for a relatively niche market compared to Opel diesels in Europe. They also tend to have better high temperature characteristics. Another solution is the Amsoil DP020, which is also on the thick side for a 0w-20, and is designed for the 3.0 Duramax. Not certified, but if they analyze it they are not going to be able to tell it's not a Dexos D oil, the viscosity characteristics will line up. A certified but hard to find option is Ravenol LDD 0w-20 which meets both the Opel and Dexos D spec. My oil choices would be: 1. Amsoil DP020, 2. Ravenol LDD 0w-20, 3. Liqui-Moly 6610. Any of those are going to be light years ahead of the AC Delco or Mobil 1.
I'm a retired truck driver and the big thing when you buy DEF check the date codes and make sure it's current. I used to drive Mack Trucks and had the opportunity to drive a new one for a couple of times before I retired and the new engines actually checked the quality of the DEF. I'm not sure if the GM diesel is Advanced enough to do that.
I really wonder if the engine was broken in properly, first 500 is not above 55, constant varying of RPM (so no cruise control), all per the manual, and mine uses 0 oil between oil changes. I get a couple full oil changes (14 quarts and 2 filters) shipped to the house from RockAuto for $118.46 (priced out just now), so about $60 and oil change. I have used about 10 gallons of DEF in 16K miles, and this thing is so much fun to drive. I'm wondering if that long trip home, over 55, probably using cruise control so the RPM wasn't being varied much, might have not been good for the engine break in.
I would agree on break in. I’ve got 2500 miles on mine, easy driving and variable speeds and no oil consumption that I can tell. Still shows overfull. Time will tell, but I’m a firm believer in taking it easy on a new engine until it’s got some miles on it.
@@hammer-r, 100% agree, I know you get the best break in by constantly varying RPM and lower RPM for the first 500 (I did 600), I also drove for 45 minutes home and let the engine cool completely before the next heat cycle allowing the expansion, contraction, and the seating of the rings, to happen more slowly over a longer period of time, it really seemed to help in my case to give me great analysis numbers according to Blackstone on my oil analysis reports.
@@1randyharbin in your opinion, when do you think the break in is complete? I’ve been trying to put on as many miles as possible before I trailer an RV out west. I’ve got about another few weeks before I put that truck to the test. I’ll still be as easy as possible, but at 7000 lbs and high altitude it’s gonna be a job for her. As for def, I’ve used about 1 - 1.5 gallons per the dash gage so that’s not an issue. I’m sure it will drink it trailering, but for normal driving, it’s not an issue and at the mileage I’m getting, I couldn’t care less. My only concern is which one to buy and getting the best diesel I can find. Tks for your input. And Tim another great video.
Appreciate your review. I have been considering trying a 3.0 over the 6.2 due to fuel tank sizes on the gm. We own a napa store in Texas and we sell lots of mobil 1 0w-20 dexos. Disappointed to hear your store didn't have any on hand. As for the platinum def vs blue def, its my understanding that platinum has a slightly different blend for longer shelf life. Have had many customers complain about def quality issues with the platinum def. We have never carried the platinum in store for that reason. I have personally ran napa brand blue def in all my trucks, tractors, and equipment for years with zero issues. Cheers!
I e been running Ams oil since I purchased my lm2. Truck doesn’t burn any oil. Check your oil filter it may be leaking. I had one loosen up on my truck. Also I don’t use factory oil filters. I use Ppe extended oil filters.
The fuel economy loop in your Tundra last year said you got 24.5mpg. Sounds like it was a lot more variable though as later road-trips you got much less.
@@Pickuptrucktalk That new Tundra is absolute trash. Your Baby Duramax is awesome. I'd buy that in a heart beat...once they figure out this oil burning problem.
‘21 3.0 Texas edition with 92,000 miles. Tow an RV and boat occasionally, which neither require a 2500. No oil ever added. Had one issue with a short wiring harness within the first 6 months-only symptom was a dash light-fixed under warranty. Def usage is not an issue except under extreme load. For example. I was towing my RV toy hauler through the mountaineers against a 60mph wind. Otherwise is a daily and def is added every couple of months or so. Had a 2011 5.3 Silverado before this(no RV)and traded it at 170,000. Replaced brakes at 150,000 and cleaned the throttle body. I see this one with the wear indicators looking like it will be close to that low maintenance. Compared to my relatives 3/4 ton Ford, this truck has been amazing.
my complaints about mine are : no 12V plug, auto stop button, no ACC function, I mean there is, but it goes off after a few minutes, shoulnd be like that, I don't like that the steering controllers don't control de radio except the ones in the back of the steering wheel that are for volume and change tracks, other than that, i like the fuel economy and how quiet the truck is.
The oil...I wouldn't want to run it 2 quarts low. The viscosity (0W) might be fine, but I don't see how it relates to engine component tolerances? 5W oil is still more resistant to breaking down. I would use the 5W if it was summer, if I was towing regularly, or if I was only taking short trips in stop and go traffic. I think it offer better protection for the engine components under those conditions. As an aside: Nissan recommends 5W-30 in their VC-Turbo, but Infiniti recommends 0W-20! Same engine.
My 6.2L in my truck states in the manual uses 1 qt of oil between oil change, and it uses it. Granted ive had another 6.2 in a camaro and didnt use any.
Everyone has issues with 0w-20, I switched to 5w-20 and a lot of my issues with a V8 went away towing. There is a bulletin about a cam cover oil baffle out there that would explain you oil consumption and oil consumption would also make you use more Def. So go get it checked out.
I always check oil level before any long distance drive like yours. But, all I carry is windshield washer fluid in my F150 because I like being able to see and it drinks it faster than any prior vehicle.
I have a 23 lz0 4200 miles no towing all highway miles still full on the dip stick. But just yesterday it died going 70 mph on highway crank but no start so towed to dealer. They said this motor is so new it’s a learning process. Their scan tool said lost communication fuel pressure regulator at first glance.
Love your videos , i was getting 22 mpg , then i I put a level kit and 33x12.5 on . I’m averaging 17 mpg . I’m less than 2k miles on truck hope she breaks in better . Also my 18:04 infotainment system works 60% of the time , no noise even fm stereo . Dealer is ordering a new one . Gonna be a few weeks . Not sure if I’m happy with this truck
@Tim I ordered a '21 LTZ with the 3.0 (thankfully) before they started having supply issues. Life to date (36k miles) I'm averaging 24mpg with a heavy city lean on my miles. Except for an infotainment system issue that GM handled REALLY well and a hard freeze that really freaked it out last winter, I've had no complaints.
What tires are you running? I do a heavy lean on highway and averaging about 23. Too many active regens killing the milage. Seems like it won't actually complete a regen unless you're driving 30+mph, or it has to try multiple times. If you heavy lean on city miles, that's seriously impressive. Are you on those factory P series tires?
Correct me if I am wrong on this particular engine but I would think piston speeds will be lower and expansion higher (more tolerance) so you would expect to see higher rates of oil usage and longer break in periods vs gasoline engines.
DEF is usually only around 2-3 bucks on tap at truck stops like Piolet. I would always try and fill up at those stops where I know they have DEF on tap.
I like the dial in my Ram. Simple and easy and people dont have to stare at it trying to figure out how it works. They are all electronic anyway. Even columns.
Agree. Nice looking truck. I'm torn I what to buy. I really like the Ford Platinum powerhouse, the GMC and the Ram. I don't believe I can really go wrong with any of these trucks. If I could get anything..... It would be a mix of three. I'd have the: (1) body of the Chevy. It's so unique and to me the look just works. (2) the diesel with Fords hybrid system. (3) Rams Laramie Longhorn interior. (4) I'm split in the Ram tailgate vs GM/Chevy. I really love the Rams split tailgate. But the GMs step and the fact it also functions as a bed a bed extension and also has an option for extra lighting…. (5) if like the hybrid diesel to have a larger battery, double the size of the F-150. Finally make it a plug-in hybrid.
My Z71 Rst with 3.0 was around 60. Its a crew cab regular bed. So its a bit bigger 2022 refresh interior. Cloth Seats. Im comfortable and enjoy the ride
Just picked a 2021 up yesterday. It's got the off road diesel package. 3.73 axel ratio. Haven't towed with it yet. The one thing I did notice is the turn signal lever seems high instead of 90° in relation to the steering column.
Excellent review. I own a 22 AT4X. I love my truck. However there's a few things that I would improve. The speaker grilles are amazing looking, but I wish they were higher up the door, I'm always fretting about stuff smacking into them, even my kids kicking them getting in and out...
Too bad about those rock hard seats
I have a 21 Silverado RST, 3 L diesel
I LOVE it!
Lol
This guy is so tight
I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0 diesel and change oil every 5,000 miles and has never used any oil between oil changes. If not towing I go though about 4 gallons of def fluid at 5,000 miles also.
How fast do you typically drive?

I've had the 22 a little over a month, and wow! Due to my father having dementia, I've had to make several trips from Maryland to Detroit Michigan! I never need to stop for fuel or DEF. I just had the first oil change and this truck continues to surprise me. You assessment is 100% on target, thank you for keeping me informed on things I didn't think of. Oh, and the one Month mileage is 6500.
U sound like a great son. I wish you all the best with the health of your dad
His truck is not truly broken in. It may not use oil at 20k miles.
It's designed to use oil. Your Cummins have 13 quart pans. You'd probably never notice oil usage.
Why,…why did they design it that way ?
@kameransnyder9596 did you find the reason?
Hey Tim,
Nice 6 month review on your new truck.
Ron
That’s all I put in my cars and my new 2023 Gmc 1500 Denali LZ0. Amsoil is incredible oil!
My LZ0 at4 gets nowhere near that
@@iplaywithtrucks7230 I do have the AT’s. Just did a trip to Bozeman and still avg 28.4. About 3200 miles so far.
Oil usage ??
Many of these 3.0 diesels are junk. Major problems with ALOT of them
@@smallfringeminority6499 Out of the 6 of my other buddies that have the 3.0, exactly zero of them are having problems. One of them has 140k miles on it. I am not saying none have problems. These 3.0 diesels are probably the best 1/2 ton pickup engine on the market from any manufacturer.
Have a LM2 3.0 in my '21 Silverado. Have no issues with oil consumption. Have close to 17,000 miles. Love the truck! Z71 package.
A lot of truck stops have DEF at the pump. Fill up with diesel, then grab the other nozzle and top off DEF. Just make sure blue goes with blue!

Oil consumption is happening to those who do not observe the break in period correctly!

I've had that problem, LOL. Now I look at the dash to make sure it's shut down.
My 07 6.7 seems to make oil lol
Do you have the 3.0 l diesel
@@cvaquera05 yes!
How many miles do you have on the odometer?
3000. I don't drive it a lot.
Does yours have the 3:73 or 3:23 gears? You may have mentioned and I missed it.
'with a AMSOIL remote oil filter system.
I knew I couldn’t be the only one. 😊 Man it’s hard to 7nderstand him. My hearing aids are smoking.
Yup that’s my bitch about the oil as well. Hopefully it becomes more mainstream.
Tim, I agree with all of your points! Rock Auto delivered the oil right to the door.
Hey, Tim. I bought a High Country probably 1 month after you did. So far, with the exception of 1 P0402, it’s been flawless. Just like Mickey Ds, I’m luvin it.
no oil issues?
@@jeffforbes70 nope
@@rustynail7866 cool . how often do you check and or change your oil?
Bought a 2020 RST 3.0 new in August 2020 . Love it. Avr. fuel is 8.5 l/100km. change oil every 8000km or so and buy my DEF fluid to re-fill at that time. That's it.
love how the created an entire industry for Def, who got rich...
I found a hack with the wireless charger. If you can find something about a half inch thick and place it at the bottom of the charger it will work with right case. It's almost like the charger is too high for the iphone and it needs to be lifted just a little. Works for me every time now!
Def consumption dropped quite a bit once I passed 4500 miles. I think I am at a total of 9 gallons of DEF for 10k miles and it's currently full.
Glad I found your videos on the lzo . I’ve been on the fence on buying one but , now I feel better about making the purchase
Glad I could help.
The lack of the Mist wiper function on the American trucks is what got me to start using water beading coatings (Rain-X / Aquapel) on my windshields.
I think you gave a straight forward honest review
Nice! My 2.8 Duramax Z71 gets 25 city and 29-32 Highway...depending on how I drive. I love the baby max....I'd love to get my hands on a 3.0l Silverado. But they are way to spendy for a retired guy!
What tires are you running on the Z71? My dad's 2.8 Colorado is averaging about 24mpg over the last ~45k.
I find the only people who complain about DEF are the ones that don't use it. It's really not a big deal.
+1 autozone
I have a 2023 Suburban 3L diesel. Live in California.
Driven multiple times to Northern Canada and Florida
Uses no oil.
I’ve had my 2023 for 3-4mo now, and I LOVE IT!! ;)

Thanks. Enjoying your videos too!

I've got a 2023 Chevy Silverado LTZ with the Duramax diesel... hands down best truck I have owned. I love this thing. We keep a first aid kit and tow shackles in the back seat storage btw :)
I saw a WARN WINCH?!?! You gotta do some videos of that. I've been aching to throw a discreet bumper and winch on it but haven't had much luck with the local shops.
Oh videos will be coming of the winch.
'22 refresh LMZ, near 35K miles. I do oil at 5K; never had to add any between changes. And I'm a Ford guy, no GM apologist!
Appreciate the input, I feel like a 5.3 gas job is just so much easier to live with. 10spd helps with its lack of power
My Lexus GS350 burned a little over a quart of oil every 1500 miles.
U had a pig!
@@kevinjohnson4490 - That oil consumption was Awful !!! That motor needed something, perhaps all new Valve Stem Seals, then piston rings... The only good (?) thing about this is you never had to do an Oil Change, because you were adding new oil so soon... Just change the oil filter...
It's designed to use oil.
Toyota Owner...1 quart every 1000 miles.
I agree. That tailgate is pretty slick and useful when your body doesn’t move like it used to!
Tim… ya gotta have different pictures of you for your videos. Ya always look constipated. Getting my Trail Boss with the new 3.0 this week. Can’t wait
Constipated?
I need to double check Autozone.
Maybe. I couldn’t avoid the trip home and how I drove on that trip.
I would agree on break in. I’ve got 2500 miles on mine, easy driving and variable speeds and no oil consumption that I can tell. Still shows overfull. Time will tell, but I’m a firm believer in taking it easy on a new engine until it’s got some miles on it.
@@Pickuptrucktalk, I certainly understand the situation you were in Tim.
Exactly. The one loop was amazing. After that… not so much.
@@Pickuptrucktalk how long after that test did you do the level kit? I know leveling does have a fairly decent impact on aerodynamics.

Oil..?
2023 Silverado. I ran my DEF down to 200 miles left and bought DEF at Costco. It took 4.95 gallons. The tank seems bigger than advertised
It is 5.4 gallons. I messed that up. For some reason, I have 4 gallons stuck in my head.
my complaints about mine are : no 12V plug, auto stop button, no ACC function, I mean there is, but it goes off after a few minutes, shoulnd be like that, I don't like that the steering controllers don't control de radio except the ones in the back of the steering wheel that are for volume and change tracks, other than that, i like the fuel economy and how quiet the truck is.
Tim .. Rough Country makes a bigger storage under the seat . I love it and it fits like a glove
Weird.
I have 4300 miles on my new 2023 trail boss Duramax on my long trips 30 - 700miles 29-31 mpg
My DEF lasted 3900 miles (not towing)
@16vjohnny still on OEM "General Grabber" tires....no issues thus far except for a stray nail
45k trouble free miles on my 2021 LM2 crew cab 4x4. Incredible truck, 26.1 lifetime fuel average and typically I get just under 28mpg.
Why not buy a smaller gas car with a truck bed? Maybe like a Ford Maverick? Diesels are for highway driving. Hybrids are for stop-and-go traffic.
