VW California T5 Atera Strada Bike Rack Review 2018 - How to fit and Why We Love it

  • In this video, we show you why we decided to buy the Atera Strada DL 3+1 bike rack for our VW California T5. We already had a tow-bar fitted as we want to tow our boat and hot air balloon regularly.
    Get the DL 3 here on Amazon: amzn.to/31jjsfm (affiliate link)
    Other bike racks like the standard VW one, are good but they are very high so they are difficult to load, you can't open the boot (well, not without putting a lot of strain on the boot), and there is more potential for damage to the paintwork.
    The main reasons we love the Atera Strada is that we can load the bikes on the tow bar so it is low and easy to load. Secondly, it is the only rack for the T5 which slides so you can open the boot and easily access all your things. Thirdly, it is neat and simple design, so you can fit it and load it quickly and easily.
    As you can see, for a family with a lot of bikes, we think this is the best option. We hope you find this review useful!

      Ordered it today. I have T5 with Barn doors so hope they still clear the carrier. I have the same detachable tow bar as you (which is a great bit of kit ) so fingers crossed it works. Cheers again

      @@gregormacgregor2995 Yes I can confirm that both doors still open (fully) with the rack fitted. I have the a ASC Detachable tow bar (model E4-55R-01 0363)

      Also the rack is well worth the money so easy to use and with it still allowing the doors to open fully it makes life so much easier. I was so close to buy a much cheaper rack as I did not think I would really need to open the doors much once bikes were loaded but on our first trip using the rack (less than an hour in) we had to pull over and need to get in the back of the van!
      Hope all works out for you!

    Thanks for doing this vídeo!!! I am looking to buy an ATERA Strada like yours but i am not sure that the door can be opened as your door does. I have a T4 Multivan and i hope that the ATERA Strada can work like it does on your T5. What do you think? Thank you

      @CaliCamperFamily  5 лет назад

      Maite Zabala Baltzategi I’d be surprised if it didn’t fit the T4. This rack is one of the best on the market for allowing large tail-gate doors to open. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck and let us know what you decide...CCF

    hi - great and useful vid...can I ask how wide your handlebars are? - mine are 800mm and I'm wondering whther the tailgate will clear past them? Thanks!

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching. We now have a bigger electric mountain bike and the bars are around 800mm. However, what we do now is carry an allen key to turn all the handle bars. This makes life easier when trying to slot 4 bikes alongside each other. There is then no problem at all with the tailgate clearance. Another option is to put the widest bike further back. Either way, the rack is awesome and after 2 years it has not given any trouble. All the best, CCF.

    Great video. I am looking into buying it myself as I have a drawer in the back of my van that I want to be able to extend up to a meter. Could I ask u how far it is from the back of your car to the beginning of the rack? Also, do u think it's possible to remove the rack with the bikes on? I have a pull out table in the back and want to be able to camp behind my van without having to remove all the bikes and then the rack every time. Thanks a lot! :) Ivar

      @CaliCamperFamily  5 лет назад +1

      Ivar Pande Braathen I understand what you mean....I am fitting the rack again in a few days time so will check the distance for you when the rack is extended. It might be possible to remove the rack without removing the bikes but it would be a mission to put it back on again! Thanks for watching and commenting, CCF.

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  5 лет назад

      Ivar Pande Braathen it’s only a few cm off the back of the car when in its travelling position. When it is slid away, it’s about 50cm. Probably not enough for what you need...hope that helps.

    Hi and thanks for this video. May I ask about the tow bar you had on the van for this. I've also got a T5 Cali and am not sure of the best tow bar for this bike rack. Any advice most welcome.

    • @CaliCamperFamily
      @CaliCamperFamily  4 года назад +1

      Hi Gemma, sorry about the delay in replying. Have you found a towbar yet? Do you still need one? I used a removable swan neck towbar by a company called tow trust. The very towbar in the video infact. We ran into a problem though as when I formally exported our Cali to Italy, just after the video was made, the Italians didn’t have the TowTrust tow bar in their homologation approval list (very strict here) and they needed more specific installation paper work. Annoyingly as we didn’t have time to argue, I had our 1 year old towbar removed and had to install one which they approve in Italy. Hence, I have the towbar, swan neck and keys sat in my garage that was used in the video and it is approved for a UK registered vehicle. If you like, I will send it to you if you pay the postage...? (Might be £50 not sure from Italy to you?) Just a thought and I understand if you want a brand spanker tough. If you go onto calicamperfamily.net you can send me an email. It would be good to send it to a good home...

      Vincenz Baker yes, it feels very sturdy. It comes with additional straps which are optional, but I have never felt the need to use them. It doesn’t bounce and I have had no problems whatsoever...and I must have done over 10k miles so far with it. Thanks for watching!

    Nice review. We have a Cali as well and a tandem and bike. We looked at the lot with a key issue being access to the rear. We went with Maxx Raxx. Unbelievably simple design. Recommended. You can check their vid on you tube ruclips.net/video/oJWIgGVeAv8/видео.html
