    As you'll see in this video I am repairing my wife's Buick LeSabre from 1997. This
    also covers quite a few of other GM cars that share the same platform such as the
    Pontiac Bonneville the Park Avenue. The Buick Century Monte Carlo all are very similar and the instructions for replacing the subframe bushings will work for your vehicle also. Be prepared to get a little dirty, and have a couple of jacks so, you can follow the process in which I use to install these bushings. SO, hopefully this works for you.. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Im doing this today on a 2000 bonneville. I had to take the rear subframe out and have it welded, and now its goingback up. what a pain! luckily my captive nuts are still in place.

    Interesting video as I have the opposite problem. I have a 1990 Bonneville where the body above that area rotted away and the subframe dropped with the bushings still intact. That's gonna be fun to get those out... Weld some metal in and either find another nut plate or cut a small whole in the arch and just put a nut on it. We'll see what happens! That 3800 runs too good for me to junk the car as of now even with 351K. Call me crazy but it beats a car payment and has been reliable!

    Man this video was very helpful I started hearing some noise and I jack my car up and one of my bushings is really really bad. Hopefully I can get to it within the next couple of weeks. I have a 96 LeSabre and it's clean no rust on the bottom or anywhere but I have seen the same model with the rocker panels completely rusted Buick fucked up on that.

    3:40 I had to cut an access hole in the toe board of my "90 DeVille; the caged nut had rusted away. The other cage nut a few inches toward the front of the car has a factory access opening. Replacement bushings are same part no. as LeSabre/Park Avenue.

    My 89 Regal and 90 Lumina was recalled for this problem. They sent a notice in the mail and the dealer fixed it. That was some time ago. Late 1990's maybe?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 лет назад

      It's Ironic that they were recalling a problem they knew about in the late 90's at the same time they were producing cars that would still have the same issue as this Lesabre(1997). I'll have to look into this. I'm curious if they ever did a recall for the later year vehicles. Thanks for the heads up..

    Hi I was wondering, when you were tightening the bushings up into the cradle. Did you use an impact gun or air tools? Also how flat do these bushings get when completed? I'm having a hard time with mine. They cradle keeps dropping after I let the jack out.

    Hey foxboss9, i saw that your bolts were rusted through which is what dropped the subframe. Im in the process of upgrading my suspension to make my 98 lesaber have a more comfortable ride and not bounce all over the place. Im replacing the sway bars front and rear with bonnie SSEi bars but i cant get the front bar out. Ive been told you have to drop the subframe to do so.... if that is the case, what is the best way to go about it? it shouldnt bend the cradle if i only unbolt one side should it? and where should i lift/support the car while doing this? While im in there i want to do these bushings as well, so the video was very informative. any help will be greatly appriciated!
    Thanks

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 лет назад

      I honestly can't tell you. You may want to grab a mechanic friend to help you out so you can be safe. I can't imagine the subframe bending but I also don't think you can leave in any of the bolts and have it move without damaging something. You will at least have to loosen all of the bolts. Sorry I didn't know more. Good luck!

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 лет назад

      The bushings "kit" will come with enough pieces to replace what 1 bolt holds in. So for every subframe bolt you remove, you need to order 1 bushing kit. On the front of the car, there is a total of 6 "kits" needed. 2 up by the bumper and 4 underneath =(2 under drivers footwell and 2 under passengers footwell)

      The reason the bushings are moving past the frame is because your frame is too wore out. Ours was not war out hardly at all so the bushings compressed up against it like it's supposed to

    One more thing I tried to see if I could get the bolt loose and I can't. What would you advise I do or should get?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  10 лет назад

      A breaker bar OR a pipe that will slide over top of a good heavy duty ratchet OR BOTH a breaker bar with a pipe slid over the handle... I would advise against an air impact wrench as it may cause the upper "nuts" (ones I talk about in the frame) to come loose from their mounts more easily and spin with the bolts(not good at all) and remember to pull a wrench don't push..unless you are using your foot..

      @@Foxboss9 But the front bumper 2 seem different. I recently removed the subframe of my parts lesabre(1997), and it looked like there was an extra metal sleeve, verticle, on top of the subframe. The bushing didnt fall out like the others, after trying to get one out, it seemed like it was enclosed in a metal sleeve and pressed into the subframe. The front bushing on one side has a mostly rusted out vertical sleeve, the other side it is mostly intact, as is the old bushing. On the rusted out side, there is metal ring on the bottom side of the subframe, like a sleeve had been pressed upwards. I cannot find any detailed pictures of the subframe in this area, nor can I find any new subframes to buy. Nor can I find anyone who says that all 6 bushing mounts are the same, until now.

      I hear you about the intake gasket. Just had mine replaced. Apparently they give up in the area around the EGR tube where it gets so hot. When mine had problems, I barely was able to limp back home, then wouldn't start. Had towed to GM dealership next day. Also hearing random bumping noises in front end and some occasional pops...probably subframe bushings.

    say the ring the bushings go through is totally rusted out, would it be possible to make say a sleeve to emulate the ring, that could be tack welded as an emergency temp fix? I am guessing as long as the diameter is around 2" it would work, but a sleeve would give alittle extra support for the whole arm versus just a ring.

  • @Nowayjose-z2r
    @Nowayjose-z2r 3 года назад

    Pretty common issue on these GM cars. I personally channel the subframe and weld in 1/4" flat plate with two 2" (can't remember exact, but same size as bushing) and weld it in. You should get an alignment after too just to be sure you didn't change the camber and/or caster to much as the lower control arm is mounted to the sub frame.

    Unfortunately this is one of the prices of the luxury ride quality of these. The newer ones with the aluminum subframe that don't have this problem have a much harder ride. These bushings wouldn't rot the frame out if they weren't so soft and didn't have so many air voids that hold water in them. The Japanese and German cars do luxury suspension with sealed hydraulic bushings instead of air void bushings to avoid the rust issues, but those bushings cost a lot more and eventually fail and leak the fluid out of the bushing and then cost a lot to repair too. I don't see this being a recall issue as much as it should be (and it might already be) a technical service bulletin to alert techs to check for this problem. It's easy to spot well before it fails if you look for it.

      Jack up subframe. Use 2 jacks. Position jacks so you can reach all 4 of the bolts that have pulled through the subframe. Remove bolts. Lower subframe to remove upper cup and rubber. Install new upper cup and rubber. Raise subframe on both sides but leave one side( the side without new cups and rubber) Slightly lower, to slide in new parts after you get the first side the lower rubber pressed on and bolt started(both inner and outer bushings on one side)... Once both bolts on first side are started slide in new upper cup and rubber on other side and then raise subframe to hold them while you press lower rubber on and start bolts. Then tighten all..

    I'm guessing you need air tools I have the same car same problem on both sides are gone then what do you do? Becides replace the whole cradle because I'm doing this project on the ground!! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  5 лет назад

      I just wrenched the bolt in air tools actually might get it started but you need to have something that's pretty powerful as far as leverage to be able to feel how tight to get the bolt. You have to replace the Cradle if the bushings are pulling through.

    I believe I commented you on your video of how beautifully and wonderfully it was made I have a 92 Chevy Lumina APV minivan I looked at your video maybe a month ago with mine the front one the rubber broke on the front right then the other two went in the rear one thing I noticed about the front the the seat where the bushing sat rotted some The Backs were in pretty good condition what I did for the front it might have been a little heavy but I put a quarter inch Square plate drilled out the center and on the top right corner shaved off of piece of metal so would fit in the subframe what I'm doing to the metal I'm going to clean all the metal off with a good wire wheel down to the greysteel then I'm going to spray a few coats of semi-gloss primer in the paint Rust-Oleum just spray it and let it dry and put a few coats on then I want to take some of Hercules truck bedding chemical spray and go over it again then you should have no more problems rust for a long time especially when it's in good shape you want to keep the car I think it's worth keeping these older cars sometimes because you going to put money in any car that you have whether it's newer or older parts go bad and if you like the car and it's not nickel-and-diming you keep it I'm keeping my 92 until I can't get no more parts for it pretty much everything has been replaced I'd say 75% is treated me well for 222 Thousand Miles and still pass emissions and van inside and out everybody been wanting to buy it it's in great shape

    I had the same problem. I still remember the awful site of the disintegrated remains of the bushings fall out into a small pile of rust and dry rotted rubber on the floor as I removed the bolts. The bolts themselves were also a sight to be seen. They were so worn in the middle, they were hourglass shaped. I'm lucky the car didn't fall apart while I was driving! Unfortunately, I needed to get things back to together and fixed asap, so I was forced to buy my parts at the dealership for a premium (no auto parts stores stocked the Dorman parts near me).

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 лет назад

      Yep, they rust pretty bad. I was able to get the parts cheaper from Amazon than the local parts store.

    What is the engine cradle torque specs?

  • @2stage90
    @2stage90 6 лет назад

    If you have to cut a pocket to get to the nut. When its time to close it up, go get a can of roofing tar and putty knife some over the hole. It will dry after a couple days and if need be years down the road it can be peeled away if need be and will stay put longer than shooting it with undercoat and cheaper

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 лет назад

      Good Point....I use to use roof patch to install new floor boards ....I think there were more locations for water to get in then just the hole that I cut..I wouldnt necessarily want to seal up an area in which water continues to seep in from an area that cant be sealed, Unless of course, you seal the entire underside...

    How much would you say a mechanic would charge for this job? How many hours should it take?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 лет назад +1

      WOW! That could vary.. Depending on how difficult the old ones were to remove. Like I mentioned in the video, if the upper nut in the frame spins instead of the bolt coming right out it could definitely add some more labor time.. I would guess if everything came apart perfectly and you were only replacing the back four bushings(like this video) a non-dealership mechanic could bill anywhere between $100-$250 for labor not including a front end alignment..

    • @giskard80
      @giskard80 8 лет назад +1

      once your bolts drop down through, make sure you run air or PB Blaster up into the hole with the nut, it clears any debris that may have fallen into the threads on the inside nut.

    • @giskard80
      @giskard80 8 лет назад

      This seems like common sense, but I had to back out all my bolts and clean threads before going again because the rust had fallen into the nut.
      Good luck.

    Would packing the new bushings with grease increase the longevity of the repair?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 лет назад

      matt zehentner no.. Quite the opposite.. the bushings, Where Metal contacts metal, do not move against each other. The bushings, once mounted solidly, are meant to provide a rubber buffer that allows Flex and vibration isolation. The only thing grease would do is cause the rubber to deteriorate faster.

    • @mdogg1604
      @mdogg1604 6 лет назад

      I looked for about 5 minutes online and I didn't locate any for a 98 Park Ave. You may want to try some Buick forums and ask Park Avenue owners I'd you can use the bushing kits that I used.

      Foxboss9 I was told by a few Gm dealers that the front bushings was the same as the rear bushings. And some Gm dealers told me the front bushings and rear bushings are different. So I’m kind of confused. I need to replace the front and rear bushings on my 97 lesabre. I did find the Dorman 924-043 which the link you sent me too. I thought the Dorman 924-043 kit was good for the front and back, guesss not. But I can’t find the rear bushings kit no where. Do you know where can I find the rear bushings kit and how many kits would I need to replace the rear?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 лет назад

      Javaunte Ward so sorry, fortunately for my wife her rear bushings were okay. This however is unfortunate for you as I did not have to look for them. I did have a viewer a couple years back say the same thing. He said that he could not definitely fine the rear bushings without talking to GM. Good luck.
