Fueled by white resentment and male grievance to name.

The far-right grows, fueled by Trump’s lies,
A “Big Lie” chorus where democracy dies.
Changing voting laws to block the vote,
A desperate attempt to cling to the old boat.

Giridharadas warns, "They cling to the past,
Barnacles on progress, but they won’t last.
We must shift the story, make it bright,
A tale of hope to outshine the night."

Falsehoods spread through social media’s stream,
Filling minds with conspiracies and schemes.
“The Great Replacement,” they falsely claim,
A fear-driven story to fan the flame.
Yet Anand says, “The fight’s not done,
We’ll build a democracy for everyone.
Education, persuasion, a patriotic tale,
A thrilling story that will prevail.”

Michelle Obama once said, “Go high,”
But Anand reminds us, let’s hit the sky.
Giridharadas calls on allies abroad,
To speak on democracy, where freedoms are flawed.
With courage and truth, we’ll change the song,
America united, where we all belong.

Former foreign correspondent and columnist Anand Giridharadas joins Dawna Friesen and gives his opinion on the state of the United States in 2022.
“The United States is in a really big pickle because democracy itself is being tested in this country as it has only been in truly intense moments in American history," says Giridharadas.
"Right now, one of the two major political parties is essentially running to sabotage the practice of democracy itself and that’s the modern Republican party that is running on a platform of white racial resentment, male grievance, and having to live in an egalitarian world."
