Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the 1961 India-China war and the role of Tawang in the conflict. Tawang is a small town in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India, and it played a significant role in the war between India and China.
The 1961 India-China war was a brief but intense military conflict between the two Asian giants over their disputed border in the Himalayas. The war began in October of that year, when Chinese forces launched a surprise attack on Indian positions in the eastern sector of the disputed border.
Tawang, located in the western sector of the border, was an important strategic location for India during the war. The town is located near the Tibet-Sikkim-Bhutan tri-junction, and its capture by Chinese forces would have allowed them to cut off India's access to the region.

पाँचवी दलाई लामा के आज्ञा से मेरग लामा लोडोस ज्ञाछ़ो द्वारा तवङ मठ का स्थापना सन १६८१ हुआ। त और वङ दो शब्दो से मिलकर तवाङ बना है। त का अर्थ घोड़ा तथा वाङ का अर्थ चुन्ना होता है अर्थात घोड़ा द्वारा चुना गया और वह घोड़ा पाँचवे दलाई लामा का नहीं मेरग लामा लोडोस ज्ञाछ़ो का था।

To get the facts right, it was the local leader shri Pema Gombu Khum who initiated the idea of bringing Tawang under the geographical banner of India. He took the proposal twice to Major Bob Khating who was stationed at Dirang post as the first one went unsuccessfull. Shri Pema Gombu Khums legacy and work towards the people of Tawang has always been under the shadows. However one cannot ignore the truth just because the authors of certain books were too lazy to dig deep into the actual story and write down the first thing that they heard from a few military personnel. Pema Gombu Khum had been fighting the war against Tibetan rule since he was only 14 years old when his father was murdered in cold blood by tibetan officers for raising his voice against the high taxes laid on the people of Tawang. Pema Gombu went on to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet at the time to fight for the justice having only turned 14 years of age. He was the real hero behind bringing Tawang into the Indian territory. However with time the people are forgetting about his contribution which is very sad and heartbreaking to see at the same time.
May his soul rest in peace.

In 1994, I was in depression. At that time in my old house, I found a book, Himalayan Blunder, written by Brigadier Dalvi. This was in English. I remain in my house due to depression and read this book. In that, 1962 war history was given by the author, who was in military. Tawang word is there about 100 times in that book.

China and India never share a border , when British India and Tibet sign a Simla agreement which clearly shows that Tibet was a independent country. In 1959 whole Tibet was fully illegally occupied by China , Tibetan are really grateful to government and people of India for generosity. If India had help Tibet that time then present border problems with China won’t face with India and crore of ruppes on defense budget each days with China. India should act more bold step to curb Chinese aggression. Jai hind n Jai Tibet 🇮🇳🙏

There was no road to Tawang on Indian side until recently and troops and supply movement was using horses. Indian military faught with WW1 rifles whereas Chinese had automatic rifles. I have seen this by my own eyes.

Its not Tiangsang Gyatso its Tsangyang Gyatso, it is the name 6th Dalai Lama who was born in Tawang in the year 1683. Founder of Tawang monastery is Merak Lama Lodoe Gyatso and founded in the year 1680-81 with the wishes of 5th His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
