This tutorial existed when I was writing my Master's thesis in LaTex. Had I found this at the time, it would have saved me so much effort. Thanks for making such a detailed tutorial.
I really have enjoyed these videos and after watching them I went through to try them myself, which is when I ran into an error. I wrote the same thing but am getting the error: "Undefined control sequence" and it just ends in a "?" I have updated Latex but I believe I have version 2.8 and don't know how to install a later version if thats even a thing? Awesome video though!
Which editor are you using. I have a Mac with TeXstudio and it doesn't look or behave the same. I particularly have an issue with the compiling of Bibtex, I get it to work, but I suspect that is by chance ;-)
You're right. These tutorials were made a couple years ago. Since then I've worked on making things easier to read. This was recorded on a 27" display, and it looked fine to me there. However on my 13" laptop I can't see anything. Sorry about that.
The video is great...however, I typed as same as you but when I pressed the blue button for pdf view, the other window appeared with the warning "Error: File not found"...what should I do now?
Would i be better off writing a small proof for some challenge my hs teach gave me in docs or word or something, how long would it take (like in hours) to be competent enough to do like maybe a page, to page and a half proof (with math stuff). thx
An hour or two is typically enough, easier to get an example paper online with some proofs done already and see how the person did it. It is very logical to use
I created a file using texshop, I saved it then 5 different files are saved. But I want to retrieve my source code so that I could edit it. please tell me how to do it?
Does anyone know where I can get a more up to date explanation? I got about a quarter of the way through thinking oh wow this guy is good at explaining but then it turns out my version works differently...
so much work just to make a front page :') seriously, I STILL HAVE NOT found why i would use latex and not word...the only thing i can come up with, it is free......
LaTeX does have a steep learning curve. It's not the best for small documents - Word works great for that. Where the power lies is in large, complicated documents. If you're writing a thesis, for example, with many tables, images, references, etc, LaTeX makes keeping track of place holders easy. I've written reports in both Word and LaTeX, with my largest report being 85 pages long. LaTex was much easier to use for the large report. Word eats up a lot of resources whereas LaTeX doesn't. So really, it depends on what you're trying to do. If you're doing a lab report for high school, Word is fine. If you're doing a lab report for your undergrad, Word is fine. If you're writing up a thesis for your phd, LaTeX might save you considerable time and frustration. LaTeX is also better for collaborative works. If you're doing a group project with subsections written by different people, using LaTeX you can import the subsections together easily and have standardized formatting across all the sections. With Word this would a tedious and laborious process.
Finally someone who could explain!! thanks. i do have another question because you said: '' LaTex was much easier to use for the large report. Word eats up a lot of resources whereas LaTeX doesn't.''. What do you mean by it eats up a lot of resources? latex need less MB's than word? thank you in advance. best wishes
If your report has many figures in it, you body the system down when it loads up all those images for your document. With LaTeX you don't actually insert (and display) the image - you just create a pointer to the image location. A large report in Word can take a long time to load up for editing and can take a while to scroll through as it generates the images for the screen. Latex doesn't do any of that. The file size of your latex report is consequently smaller too (though I figure documents and images are so small in the scheme of things anyways that this shouldn't matter). If you create a document with 100 images in it and try scrolling through and finding a position in the document it takes some time. If you create a document with 100 lines of code pointing to images, it takes no time to scroll through it and find a position.
again, thanks. and i really like the quick reply! it does sound better indeed the way you put it. i am now looking for tutorials how to use latex. to be fair i am not into the coding everything in order to create a report, but as i look through the tutorials, you can basicly copy paste a text in a kind of template....if that is the case, then i would be using LaTeX :) much easier thanks again for all the information. the lightning fast reply was wonderful
Hi I tried this... but the console reported the following. Not sure how to get past this. all easy, but just spend more time how to Build. you just say boom, but it's the first time on latex, might be easy for you, still struggling to have a pdf with your first example
Unclog my mind pore x pore root spirit in weathery just when close falls away check note of asking record and where your hearts at moving from mind or leave(a near study from a further study of affair or romance and 2 romey.
For a small lab report for school Word is fine. Word becomes a real pig when you're working on large documents, like a business report, or a thesis. When your documents start becoming 50+ pages, LaTex really starts to shine. Especially if you have many citations, figures, and tables. LaTeX is also good for collaborative work. If you have a group assignment, different sections of a report can be divided up between teammates, and you have one master LaTeX report file that stitches all the pieces together and standardizes formatting.

Hello, When i open LatexiT an error message pops out "pdflatex not found or doesnot work as expected" how to fix it ? I am using Yosemite 10.10.3.
the package of numbering the pages doesn't work only worked in the first page
I got a question about the vertical spaces... when I input [2.4cm] for example, it just prints it out.. what's with that?
You are probably missing a \\ in the previous line.
Does anyone know where I can get a more up to date explanation? I got about a quarter of the way through thinking oh wow this guy is good at explaining but then it turns out my version works differently...
It helps if people know which version you're using. In the videos I am using 3.18
Thank you! I'm using 2.7.5
Thanks
What is the software used ?

Rahul Rajan Are you able to build any simple documents? What lines of code in particular are giving you an issue?
how to download for win 7.............plz reply
only for mac users?
Nope, LaTeX is for Windows, Mac and I think there is even a Linux build. But you can also just go online and write LaTeX. (I really like overleaf.com)
How to build???
all easy, but just spend more time how to Build. you just say boom, but it's the first time on latex, might be easy for you, still struggling to have a pdf with your first example

It makes me angry that some people think this program is necessary when Word exists...
Try doing what he did in this video in word and let me know how that goes.
Haha try doing scientific papers using word. Its such a drag. LaTeX ftw.
I dont understand why would someone add so much work and effort into just typing up an article. Why not us MS word ? Or Word doc?
is it just me or this guy sounds a lot like Joji (Flithy Frank)????????
Inches is not a Standard Unit, it is just dumb.
True mate
you made zoom out when writing commands, so sad
I see steam on Dock hahahhah
what is the fkin point of latex,,,why would i go truuu al the trouble making something i can make in word for a minute
