I've been doing a deep dive on Charity Ward since yesterday. Not much narrative out there, but it looks like she is an overnight success and it only took her 10 years to do it. She is definitely seasoned from those years of obscurity. She moves in sync with her music like this is not the first song she has ever sung. The writing and deep groove of this song are fire, but it is her vocals that take it over the top. There is a timbre and vibrato in her upper voice that she does not use in her other songs. That vocal is what has kept me listening to this song for two days. She could be singing about student loans and car payments and this song would have still held me hostage. Well, that and the 3 whole seconds of gospel at 1:48. And for the record, we are gonna need more than a 3 minute radio cut. There are so many places these musicians could stretch out and take this song for another 10 minutes. Let it breathe.
