    Jesus... been changing strings on guitars for decades and I never thought about using a capo to temporary keep the string in place while you wind the tuners (to pull the new string tight/taut). Love it.

    THANK YOU! I got the low E string on with way too much effort before looking this up. I see how this will simplify my life. There will be much less colorful language while I finish changing my strings.

      Hey, this episode wasn't about prooving how stable Bigsby trems can be. 😅 We made a video on that just a few weeks after this one, there you'll get tons of Bigby love in the test ride. Cheers //Kris

      Hey, he didnt put any nut buster on and the strings are still fresh. I dont blame him. Things are super unstable the first week or two, Especially if you press or pull too hard.
      I usually wait a week before abusing the vibrator, and put nut buster on first. Both on the saddles and on the actual nut.
      Once the tuning stability balances out you can really start having fun with the bigsby without worrying then, but until then its constant fear that too much movement will throw 2-3 strings out of tune and make your playing sound sour in an instant. Its just part of owning a bigsby, and its worth it for the control and subtlety in the vibrato effect.

    FINALLY A USE FOR MY CAPO. Got my first bigsby guitar after years of only strat and FR styles. It was an absolute breath of fresh air even changing the strings is easier, and i can tune to whatever i want whenever and maintain stability by simply depressing and pulling the bar and retuning several times..

    I strung a guitar with a Bigsby for someone years ago. Forgot what a horrible awkward job it was. Just bought a guitar with a Bigsby & found your video after repeatedly having the 1st string I attempted to put on constantly pinging off. The capo tip did the trick. Thank you so much. I will sleep more peacefully tonight. BTW. Nice lick.

After I watched this I got some pliers, pinched the ring at the end, and then bent the string around them. Worked perfectly. And the capo was an enormous help.

    Question: does the capo stay pressing the string while winding in the machine head?

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  3 года назад +3

      Shortly yes, but as soon as there's some tension on the string, you can (and should) remove it. It's only important using the capo as long as the string is completely loose. Cheers //Kris

    Bending the end with the ball end, that was the trick I needed, thank you! You are quite worth of the name Thomann and the shirt, my family in The States spell it with one end. You have a job for a guitar phanatic who helped build Amazon's transportation network, and is also your cousin somehow?

    • @alext7860
      @alext7860 2 года назад

      One n.... Thoman and pronounce it with the softer Th sound. Not a very common name here, so crazy I'm obsessed with guitars and you are who you are. I really seriously would love to work for you, if you need a stateside rep, or I'm open to ideas. Could def get acquainted with the Fatherland (hope that expression isn't too tarnished).

I cut the strings then change a few strings and I see that the strings arent touching the saddles anymore like even if I put the strings on the neck they still dont sit on the saddle??? like wtf happened??? then strings are way high now, how come?? omg. did the bigsby go up 1/4 inch when I cut the strings? is that possible lol it seems all solid so?? I'm at a lost. will bring it to the luthier. I hate this thing omg.

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  2 года назад

      Generally, sure why not. I'm way faster this way though because I have more place for my fingers. Especially at the bridge when I try to fiddle the ball ends through the Bigsby. :)
      But as always, there's no right or wrong way of changing strings. You can develop your own style, whatever works for you best. Cheers //Kris

  • @andreasbravos7943
    @andreasbravos7943 3 года назад +1

    Hi Kris, a question: When you line up manually the strings to be parallel here on Bigsby or on other types of guitar that they don't have a saddle per string, you do it when the strings are loose or when you tune them? Also after this action, there is any possibility to move from their position?

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  3 года назад +3

      I usually do this under tension (after tuning them). Maybe not fully tuned, but definitely under some tension. Since a stright line is the shortest way for the strings, they will then stay that way, even if you used the tremolo bar. Cheers //Kris

    My gretsch electromatic has big problems with each volume knobs, there is nothing happening till i reach about 7 then it kicks in but not in a smooth transition. How do i change the electric on my semi hollow guitar?? Pls help

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  3 года назад

      Hey Adriano, that's pretty tricky unfortunately. We made an episode on swapping pickups on hollow body guitars, you might find some useful moments in there: ruclips.net/video/e07Zc3ap_CE/видео.html
      If it's a full hollow Gretsch (without a tone block), you'll have to try to pull the whole electronics out through the pickup routing. Or maybe just use the strings and pull everything out through the F hole. It depends on the model, but either way, it's not a nice thing to do. If you don't feel like going there, visit a guitar tech for the pot swap. Cheers //Kris

    Hi, I have bigsby-looksalike Ibanez Artcore ASF75 (bigsby with only one round bar - the one with pins to attach strings) with bridge non attached to a body (like in violins). If I change strings one by one, it is OK, but if I want to clean it more thoroughly and change all the string at once, it is a really pain in a posterior to set things back. Is there any quick trick for reposition bridge in such a cases? I'd like to keep my guitar clean, bu I'm terrified of what that requires of me afterwards... I have tried using masking tape to mark bridge position, bot in don't work well...
