Loved this video. Most of us in Australia only ever knew that 'With the Beatles' sleeve with the groovy pink writing for years. I always thought it was an excellent album cover. Of course, it would've been a shock for the band to see it -- it would've looked pretty hokey to them. When I was young I assumed that our version of 'Beatles for Sale' was a live album due to the live shots of the band on it. Again, when I eventually saw the proper sleeve I was shocked to see how moody it was, as was 'With the Beatles'.

For those of us (in Australia) in the 1980s collecting Beatle LPs...the irony is we paid top dollar for Japanese imports to get the UK covers (plus the always amusing English to Japanese to English translated lyric sheets), rather than the local ones (similar prices to modern 180gm vinyl - NOT adjusted for inflation!! As a student at the time I have no idea how I did it - probably skipped eating!). A few years later CDs were issued - and all the local covers disappeared - and the formerly disposable became collectible! How we laughed.....

Now for the New Zealand albums! Due to our only National Chart at the time, the 'Lever Hit Parade' which was a top 8 based on what was generally popular overseas or ocasionally local, we had the Beatles pretty much as early as the brits, February 1963.

here is something you may find interesting but it was only released in Australia and New Zealand The Essential Beatles is a greatest hits compilation album by The Beatles which was exclusive to Australia and New Zealand on the Apple Records label. All of the songs featured on the album (with the exception of "With a Little Help from My Friends") reached the top 3 in the Australian charts as singles and EP tracks.
Most of the songs on the album are presented in true stereo, while "Love Me Do", "P.S. I Love You" and "Baby You're A Rich Man" are in "fake stereo". Two notable mastering glitches appear on the album: "Penny Lane" running slow with a noticeable "warble" and "Long Tall Sally" on this album, has the stereo channels reversed.
The album was reissued twice in the 1980s. The first time as part of the Superstars of the '70s box set, released by the Australian branch of World Record Club in August 1980. The second being in December 1982, where it was paired with the Barry Miles book The Beatles In Their Own Words in a box set titled: The Beatles Sight & Sound.
The album was issued on cassette in 1972, but has never seen a compact disc release (as was the case with non-canon Beatles albums at the time). It remained in print until 1991, when all the Australian Beatles vinyl was deleted from EMI Music Australia catalogue and replaced with imported vinyl from the UK.

It was interesting to learn about the union rule forbidding imported negatives. I think that restriction must have continued into the 1990s, because many old Australian made CDs (especially those from WEA / Warner) have very blurry, low-contrast artwork. The only crisp text on the back cover is "Made in Australia" 😁

Interesting video Andrew. No mention of Sgt. Pepper & Abbey Road? A few details worth mentioning. The mono and stereo pressings had distinctly different label designs. The mono Rubber Soul carried the rejected UK 'loud cut' up until deletion in 1969. The mono pressings of the two Greatest Hits LP's were folddowns, not true mono. Sgt. Pepper had imported UK sleeves until it was switched to a single sleeve in 1969. Your orange label Beatles For Sale is from around 1973/4. The poster from the White Album was censored in 3 places and only stereo sleeves were supplied, with mono stickers added where needed. The numbering on the front sleeve was different - beginning with A and 5 digits. Finally the Aussie mono Yellow Submarine LP is a genuinely scarce and expensive item. You managed to compress in 1 video what I did in 4 lol. But that's enough from me. Thanks Andrew. Cheers mate 😊😎

I’m from Australia so most of my Beatles studio albums are Australian mono pressings. My copy of Rubber Soul has so many scratches on the record and looks like it would be below a G+ rating but surprisingly those scratches don’t effect the record as much as you’d expect and plays like a VG record. Around where I live people didn’t take care of their records too well so having scratches throughout the record in the background doesn’t bother me since the music itself is louder and I’ve learnt to ignore it pretty well!

Great video on our Oz pressings. In 1964 I knew the guys at EMI Sydney studios they went to great trouble with their mastering. I was a panel operator at Top 40 Radio 2UE in Sydney and we did our breakfast session 5-9am from Mascot airport when the Beatles landed. It was crazy, even through the double sound proof windows of the bar overlooking the ramp, we could clearly hear the fans screaming. At our studios we had our 45rpm turntables set to 48rpm to sound more exciting than our competition and it worked, we got more requests to play Beatles songs than the other stations. Great days working on the wireless.

      From my book...
In February 1973, to commemorate the 10th
anniversary of the first Beatles record released in Australia (Please Please Me/Ask Me Why), EMI (Australia) repackaged the two
previously issued Greatest Hits volumes into a double-LP set with a new gatefold sleeve and distinctive purple labels. The set was promoted nationally by member stations of the Major Radio Network of Australia, with the front cover featuring a gold sticker on the
top left displaying the call sign of the
      promoting station. The participating radio stations were 2KO, 2UE, 3DB, 4BK, 5AD, 6PR, 7EX and 7HT.
The set was to be short-lived, however, for a few months later EMI UK announced the impending release of The Beatles 1962-1966 and The Beatles 1967-1970, effectively scuttling sales of the commemorative set, which was quietly deleted before mid-1973.

I have wanted to own an Australian copy of 'With The Beatles' for some time. I love the cover art variant. It feels more fun and definitely captures the mood of Beatlemania more than the standard cover (IMO).
As mentioned in the video, and confirmed by discogs, every single mono copy of Australian 'With The Beatles' has that matrix that reportedly skips/jumps on Roll over beethoven. This means that those really cool gold label variants were bad from the start (which is a real bummer because they look fantastic). I ended up buying a later stereo re-issue. I hope it sounds good when I receive it in the mail.

Don't be put off by that, it's only an issue if you're still using a cheap turntable/cartridge, otherwise it plays through fine. Even at its worse it just bounces a groove and continues. I suspect most listeners aren't even aware of the fault.

    • @Parlogram

I've never had a UK copy of that album with that matrix which jumps where it is supposed to.

I own Australian pressings of With The Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles For Sale and Hey Jude. I can absolutely vouch to your opinion about With The Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night; they still sound incredible almost sixty years later.
Beatles For Sale does lack some definition, although my copy was very pre-loved by a very generous family member who gave their copy to me.
Hey Jude is certainly the weakest in regards to sound quality, although it has been a while since I last played it.

Hi Andrew, many thanks for this video you explained so much about the Australian Album releases that in relation to the covers I either didn’t know or had read different explanations. I was amazed that you have such a high regard for most of the Australian pressings as I always was lead to believe that the British pressings were always superior. I’d like to hear your comparison with an Australian stereo pressing of Rubber Soul versus the British as I always felt that the Australian pressing sounded rather muddy.
Only criticism I have is with your intro shots of Sydney I have to say that Sydney in 1964 looked quite different to now lol 😂.
Great Video and look forward to seeing more on the Australian Beatle Releases. Thanks again!

You forgot the rare LP they recorded with Rolf Harris in Melbourne in June of 1964.
It included 'Twist and It's My Shout', 'I Saw her Shearing There', 'Hard Night's Day' (Melbourne is 10 hours ahead of London GMT time), 'Thank You Sheila', 'If I Fell Over Half Pissed', 'And I Love Her Father's Brewery', 'Anna' (Go Get Me a Beer), and Love Me Kangaroo Down Sport Do'. It is released on the rare (and now defunct) Fostersphone label under licence from E.M.I. England.

It’s probsbly already been said here, but I just figured out that the original Parlophone labels were gold-on-black for mono and silver-on-black for stereo, and I assume that was a standard thing across the entire label itself at the time.
Andrew did a really good job in accurately outlining the early history of Australian Beatles LPs. I want to also give credit to Bruce Hamlin, a pioneer in this field and whose 1981 reference guide to all Beatles downunder pressings is what I cross-referenced the information on this video with.

Greetings from Sydney! This video brought back a lot of nostalgia.
My family home when growing up was about 1km from the EMI plant at Homebush and I often walked past it on the way home from the local high school I attended. Most of the buildings are still there and it is mainly used as a self storage lock up building. Two of the streets around the building are Nipper Street and Columbia Lane.
My eldest brother worked in the office at Homebush for a while and he used to get staff discounts on purchases. I had a copy of the Let It Be boxed set until I sold it last year. I wouldn't say they were rare, but I think EMI in Australia only ever issued it once and then it was just the Let It Be LP without the book or anything else. (BTW Homebush is the suburb in Sydney that was the main site of the 2000 Olympics.)
I'm glad to hear that the sound quality of the Australian pressings were good standard. As you mentioned, the packaging was often poor and that made me wonder about the rest of the manufacturing. I can't say that listening on the equipment I had at the time would have helped me know if there was a difference, it was pretty basic gear.
Consumers in Australia in the 60s and 70s were often short changed in the packaging of the LPs and we often missed out on the gatefold covers, the lyric sheets and extras in addition to the poor quality materials and pictures. There were also delays in local release, often many months after reading about them in NME, Melody Maker or Rolling Stone. This led me and many others to seek alternative sources of LPs. Several private importer shops opened up selling European, UK and USA pressings at a premium price and they did very well and you could see the difference in the packing and printing quality, and the inclusions. For example, I have a UK copy of Dark Side of the Moon and it included two posters and stickers, which the Australian product didn't have. These import shops helped to make the local official distributors and manufacturers lift their game. I also used to send away for mail order from the UK using a company called Tandy Records. I don't know what happened to them, I stopped using them after many years when they mixed up an order and didn't respond to my enquiries. Oh well.
I must make two correction to your video. The Opera House wasn't around in 1964 as shown in the opening shot, it opened in 1973. Furthermore, Marmite is inedible sludge. ;-) Vegemite rules!
    Thanks for the memories.

Great video, I will keep an eye out now for the early records at the various fairs. I picked up a copy of Oldies but Goldies on the weekend after seeing your video on the subject, I'm in Aus and see these records all the time. I was always disappointed by the Hordern pavilion performance cover but now find it a bit quirky and typical of the prosaic but eccentric country Aus was in the 60s/70s. For the kiwis reading this and feeling left out yet again, the Oldies but Goldies I got was an NZ pressing and sounds beaut!!! As an Australian Beatles fan who bought his first Beatles LP in 1964 (A Hard Day's Night), I found your video very informative. I recall that first record that I bought had imperfections (it 'skipped') on the first tracks on both side 1 and side 2. I can recall taking it back to the shop and being told that all pressings then available had the same fault, which originated in the UK. I assume that there may have been an issue with the mother copy - or with the Australian manufacturing process. Anyway, thanks for all the interesting background you put into your video.

I got into the later Australian pressings after picking up the From Liverpool Box after seeing your video on it a few months ago. I thought I was getting a UK Box but ended up with box set pressed in Australia. I am very pleased with the sound quality. 1980s Australian EMI engineers knew what they were doing especially Otto Ruiter and Don Bartley. Makes me wonder if they were mastering from the original tapes or if their use of the Maxicut process was just that good. Their work matches up well to the one box EMI UK pressings. A smidge less warm but exceptionally detailed, great dynamics and a wide stereo soundscape. As a Beatles vinyl nerd I am loving your videos. Would love you to dive into South African and Rhodesian Beatles albums. Please and Thanks! Cheers.

Hi I’m an Australian and a Beatles fan. However the cover of the Beatles for sale album Australian version the front cover, I believe was photos from their Melbourne concert at festival hall 15/16 June 1964. However the back cover maybe from one of their Sydney concerts . Jimmy nicol was their stand in drummer until Ringo arrived and they played their first concert with Ringo at Melbourne festival hall 15 June 1964. Hence the significance of the album cover photos.
