I had an amazing time working with Michael on this song and I can't wait for everyone to hear it. I wanted to share some thoughts relating to this video with other producers, singer/songwriters/vocalists. I've been writing and recording songs for 10 years and I used to be incredibly insecure about my ability to sing. I love songwriting but I hated singing. I'd watch producers chop up my vocals and tune them and I'd have to listen to a loop of my pitchy voice repeating over and over until it was made "right". Tracking vocals gave me anxiety. My ear knew what the performance needed to be and my voice could never get there. 3 things helped me overcome this:
1. A producer that finally said to me "pitch is not king, performance is". I always prioritized pitch above all else. And because we hear music all day long on radio that is corrected or witness singers whose pitch is really strong, it's easy to lose confidence in yourself. It wasn't until a producer made me feel comfortable in that space and said, "Don't worry about getting it perfectly right, just go back to how you felt when you wrote the song" that I started to sing with confidence. Then he would compliment certain parts of the performance. "I love that breath right there!" I love how you said this phrase". Highlight what the singer is doing well. As an artist, I can't tell those of you who produce how important it is to communicate with your artist in whatever stage of recording they feel overwhelmed by.
2. Don't be afraid to go for the long takes. Michael mentions in this video that we do full song takes. He was surprised by this approach when we were working together. It is so easy as a singer to obsess with getting things just right when going phrase by phrase. It's why I've stopped doing this. I sing the whole song from start to finish. It helps me step into the emotion of the song. Every line builds upon the next. Rather than singing 5 words over and over and over and trying to get it "right'.
3. This is for those of you who struggle with pitch and want to improve. You can take voice lessons, yes. However, what helped me more was setting up a camera and audio recorder and recording live videos of my songs. That's why you'll find so many of these videos on my channel. It's not just about content. It's about growing myself as a performer. When you listen and watch yourself sing and pay attention to the parts that make you cringe, your brain actually starts working on those aspects of your technique. For 4 years now I've been making one take, live videos and if you go back and watch the first and then the most recent, I guarantee you'll see a difference in my performance. Not only that, the videos from years ago were 1 of 15 takes. Now I do 1 take. I take pride in this. It's important to remember this is all a process. We're all working hard to get better. That should be the goal! Embrace the process and make getting better the priority. You'll be surprised by your progress.
Hope some of that insight helps! We should all work to encourage each other in what we love doing. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them!
Thanks for what you do Michael! I'm having a blast working with you.
Thanks for taking the time to share this, I hope everyone can take a few things away with them - You can relate this to playing an instrument too
Oh damn this was just what I needed to hear, I love producing, songwriting and singing but I hate it when I hear myself and it doesn’t sound as good as it sounded in my head...
Thank you two very much! 🙏
Great tips not just for singers.
Excellent. Great advice .
@@OnlySufyanKhan When I was 18 someone told me "the only way to guarantee failure is to quit". Sounds like a cheesy bumper sticker, but it really stuck with me. If it's something you love doing, make your priority growth, not perfection. 100% you'll look back every year and be grateful you didn't give up. The compliment I appreciate most from fans is "I admire how you've grown since you started". Giving up is easy. Most people do. Just keep going!
Me: After hours of editing, nah, the original sounds better

The FL Studio Community is so lucky to have you Michael. Your videos are comprehensive yet easy to digest. The more I watch your tutorials, the more I'm learning about FL and music production in general. I'm really loving this DAW more and more. FL pride!!
Want a full tutorial on vocal mixing like compression, eq, reverb, delay, volume level, and mixing with music
Yea I will love to see one by this dude.

Busy works beat and you are really the greatest channel for making music. It took me a long time to release my own work because I wanted to be as good as possible. But now, I’m feeling confident enough to release my own stuff thanks to you!
That's great to hear. I'm glad you've built up your skills and feel confident now!
J L thank u !
"which tool do you use for making music?"
*BUSY WORK BEATS AND IN THE MIX*
oh yes !
Awesome! Same here.. Im still struggling with getting the vocal sound I want but Im starting to think it might be due to using a USB mic, even though it has smazing sound for voiceovers and softer singing... Not so much with louder style, more intense vocals... Almost like its clipping the internal preamp even if the input is only hitting - 6db...very frustrating and makes me self conscious.. But more on the way! Keep pushin! - Adam Melton from MeeZy StudioZ
I like how your voice is calm and not screaming like all the other youtubers
this was clearly one of the best video about Music production I have seen in my entire career.
Just a tip to make keeping the natural breath sounds little easier, is when you use the cutting tool, and right click on the vocal to fix the sound, simply don't do that to the breath parts. They will sound the same and you can leave them in without having to chop and cut them out from the original track.
Him: *talking about how the two voices sounded different*
Me: *Convinced they do, but I can't seem to find it*
5:14 I want that printed on the wall in my studio :D
Imagine if this turns into our community motto...

Dude this changed the game completely for me. I'm a terrible singer but I love poetry so I make music just for my self and this really helped me improve the sound a tenfold. Much love man!
What a brilliant tutorial. I spent days feeling frustrated because the vocals in my song sounded off, while almost everything else was fine. After watching this 20 minute video and applying the techniques learnt, the vocals sound 100 times better! Thank you so much!
Just WOW! I love your tutorials! They are so informative and I can see that you are doing this with passion. This tutorial became especially in depth. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
So like this vid for many reasons. Mainly because It's extremely down to Earth simple. I've been trying for years to get my head around Melodyne & just give up on every occasion. Watching this has been a breath of fresh air to know that the competition is listening to us ( musicians) & coming up with a product that we can actually work with. Also love the black screen, I mean who wants to look into a light / white screen....
You have some of the greatest tutorials for FL Studio out there! Thank you so much for making it possible for so many people to learn from you! Also, you just seem like the nicest guy, it's very enjoyable to watch your videos!
There are so many things to learn from you - be it about music or about the approach towards work. I've applied so many techniques that I've learnt from you and it's certainly been very fruitful. Thank you for your good work. Keep growing!
Happy to see my guy here. I'm here only to learn cuz I got a laptop mic and it doesn't even pick frequencies most of the time. Till I get a good mic, I may as well learn techniques.
I love how helpful your tutorials are! You don't waste time, you get right to it.
What a superb tutorial. Bravo 😀🎵
I'm executive producer on a new single, and wanted to give input to my engineer-producer on our vocalist's lead track, where I think edits are needed.
After watching your video a few times, I upgraded my FL Studio Producer to Signature and followed your steps to make edits to parts of her vocals. Then I passed that to our engineer-producer. What an excellent workflow. He knew exactly what I wanted from that.
As a singer-songwriter, I sing all of our demos. Honestly I'm often going into off-pitch-land in my performances. Now, thanks to you, I have an awesome tool to fix my demos before I hand them off to the musicians to get them to record the final takes. Brilliant!
I also love your suggestion about using NewTone as a tool to arrange vocal harmonies - and even migrate some parts to instrument-melodies. I see huge possibilities with that.
Thank you for your incredible training videos for us FL Studio guys and gals 😀🎵
Thank you for your service David.
Absolutely!
There's no better FL Studio channel on RUclips. Not even close. Thank you!
This is literally what I needed to know at this exact moment! You kill it with these tutorials everytime!
You're more than welcome Keith :)
Love this guy and his videos. The way he explains and the simplicity with which he does it..... Its just what I need. Thanks a ton pal..
Not gonna lie bro your videos are really informative, good, on point and just overall literally music to my ears. Keep up the good work.
Everton Cytall Thanks Everton :)
In The Mix Not a problem
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm a writer and recording artist. Have been for years. I've never recorded vocals before. I watched this vid and it helped me create a much more professional sound for my upcoming debut single. Without this video the vocals wouldn't have sounded anywhere close to as good. :)
You did this really well. I have added a few of your videos to my how-to playlist
bro im good using fl studio but you are on another level you are a true perfectionist when you learn a program you try to learn every single detail about it nice appreciate your tutorials keep up the good work
""Technically perfect, but really it's garbage" I literally laughed my ass off when you said this. Love your videos though. Very impressed by your knowledge and teaching skills.
Just wanted to say that your channel is wonderful. I've looked through many FL Studio tutorials and nobody else makes videos that are so easy to understand while also getting right to the point on all the important things like you do. Thank you so much :)
Amazingly thorough and well-explained video. Truly showcases the variation of uses of newtone and is extremely helpful for me and many others I am sure. Thanks for the great video! I subscribed!
I like that all his videos seem to get right to the point. He moves quickly and doesn't drag on and on. I love it. Thank you for getting right to the point.

LOOLLLL
Yo sólo hablo español, sin embargo este es el primer tutorial que realmente explica a detalle cómo usar este gran plugin. Saludos desde Argentina. Thank you!
Sounded perfect to me in the beginning, I thought you already applied all the corrections 😂
I felt thesame too😂😂😂
Your videos are the best vids I've found on the entire RUclips mate, so detailed and easy to understand once you teach it! Proper English gentleman 😂 for us commoners lol
Usually when I mess with the autotune newtone I always get the thing you were talking about in 16:17 with the raspyness in the breath/inhumane voice quality, but it's not only to the breaths, the annoying sound also spawns when saying the letters " S " and " F "
Can you do a video tutorial on that or at least help out by replying? I'm sure there are many others who wonder about this and how you can fix this.
In another pitch correcter there is a fix I think if you cut the tuning/autotuning entirely from the part when the ess'es or f's are heard in the vocal, but in FL Studio/Newtone I don't see any option to control the tuning of a letter in a word.
@Paris try maybe running the vocals thru a de esser first?
I think TDR Nova (free) has a de esser.
You're so good at doing this. I use autotune and I need to transition to using newtone to get a more natural sound. Thanks for these videos they help alot.
I can't even put into the track, idk why but when i do it just makes a thing called audio clip and nothing happens
you have my utmost respect sir! not many youtubers did exactly what most of us here are currently looking for, all they did just tweaked their vocal stupidly. Got yourself a new subscriber man, have a good day to you!
Can you do a video, on what to look for in studio monitors, as a beginner it's kinda confusing, and it's a large investment to make.
I'm going to be reviewing some affordable monitors very soon. The Kali audio LP6
My brother! You have CHANGED THE GAME FOR ME!! Thank you! I love you!
When i go to drag audio out of newtone it drops the smallest pattern possible and no audio is in there. Not sure if i habe something selected that I shouldn’t but can anyone help?
Same issue
He really put golden tutorial out there 4 free, what a chad ! Everybit of knowledge is understandable and we can feel his thoughful attitude in his speaking 🥰
12:44 "In The Mix"
Man... can I say that you just become my god of mixing and mastering? Not even in my music production academy I've learnd to realy listen like i do in your videos... Compliments!!!
Thank You
literally in the first 27 seconds MY MIND WAS BLOWN - this plugin is supernatural
EDIT after watching the whole thing: ...blown out of existance. This plugin is awesome
absolutely great video! :)
When I drag the voacals when everything is finsished it won’t show up for me
What an emotional odyssey, my mind is blown. I had no idea there was this level of control or that the weird newtone plugin I ignored could do it. I was exporting to audition to make some of these corrections. And the ability to convert vocals to midi could completely change my creative workflow. FL really comes packed with a goldmine of overlooked plugins
Thank you for the vid!
How to tune humans in FL Studio! :)
it wont let me send the tuned vocals to the playlist it only has the non tuned vocals plz help!!
This is by far the most professional and informative audio editing video online
After I'm done adjusting my track in newtone, I go to drag the edited track, but I end up just dropping the original track. How do I fix this?
I think u need to highlight it first
BEST TUTORIALS in youtube, really focused in MUSIC as ART. congratz man and THANKS

just found this video, and i have the same question. did you find your answer?
You probably don't have newtone
Thankyou Both so much.. Always Super Helpful. All your tutorials are so well explained. Your an asset to humanity.
Much love from Australia
"Technically perfect. But really, it's garbage." Ahahah savage

Why quality is ruined when exported from Newton to playlist
Can you suggest a way to maintain quality after processing

That was my mission with these videos. Better than paid courses, for free!
If mike thinks this needs autotune wait until he hears my singing😂
i was searching so long for autotune plugins, but it seems its ALWAYS the best idea to search for your vids. Because i had that plugin in my bundle for years already. xD Thank you so much for making these vids my man!!
I wish I knew this plug-in costs $100 before trying to figure all of this out :(
You can use it for free u just can’t save the project with it in the mixer
@@prodshorti What's the strategy to preserve your edited vocals then? Do you export them as their own file after you're done editing them, without saving the project?
@@ICanHazRecon911 I export them as a audio then delete the plugin from the mixer.
@@prodshorti Cool! Kinda figured it'd be the same strategy as exporting Sakura chords lol, just wanted to make sure there wasn't any weird fuckery that prevented that. Thanks!
@@ICanHazRecon911 no problem bro.. yeah you can do that method with any plug that is a trial and has white noise every now and then.
A magician of FL Studio. Actually I’m working on a quite similar track, and the vocals are not really perfect, and I’ve started get worried about. But then I saw this (matter of fact I saw it few years ago 😂) and now I get a more precise idea about how to work on my track.
Thank you for your tutorials!
It really helps me a lot with the mix stuff 🔥
Greetings: Washo.
technically perfect but really its garbage lmao! good video learned somthn new thanks man !
You are a musical genius. Everything you said in this video made sense 100%. Thanks for your wisdom.
Technically perfect but is garbage

Yep, classic line. Couldn't agree more.

Why garbage, pls explain
Vikas kaushal because it isn’t human. It is a program making you sound good. Basically... we all listen to robots and we don’t even know it. Also... he says it at 5:15.
I almost gave up as i can't afford a vocal pitch correction device or plugin. After this tutorial I said to me, 'you'll do just fine'.Thanks Michael !
I'm so happy to have helped! Often the tools we need are hidden away in front of us for free!
haloo, i have newtone. but, there's no "edit in pitch corrector" options. help :(
Excellent video.
I started messing with newtone a year ago.
It's crazy how many things I missed.
1st of all yes thanks to the singer for allowing this so that we can learn this awesome feature and 2nd dude your a f#$%@*g legend, thanks so much for this.
The thing is if i had never seen this video idk where my vocal tuning would be, producing hip hop is usually just autotune but there is a bit of vocal tuning involved, but it sounds even better when you just tune it. After seeing this i finally realized practicalls every song you hear on the radio has at least some pitch-correction of some sort on the vocals, and that you dont really have to worry about being a great singer. Respect
Thank you sooo much Michael❤. I've always wanted to get more comfortable with using newtone and now I finally have, this video has been so much help! I guess even after all the trouble u went through making this vid, it hella was worth it!🙏😂
Although not an FL Studio user, I am watching this video to see what's out there (MixCraft Pro 9 being my DAW of choice).
I really like your straight-to-the-point style of presentation. In some other videos, people just repeat the same info again and again.
Many thanks for sharing!
Love ur videos man! I've been using FL since forever, but every time I watch one of ur videos, I realize I'm missing out on so many cool features. Thanks so much! :) P. S: David's voice is amazing.

if i cut the part out of a track i want to edit when i open the audio sample the whole song comes up, how do i best separate it to where when i click the part i cut, only that becomes available to edit?
The experiencie you give away is Just invaluable i've been watching a lot of tutorials around RUclips but not much ppl decide to give away what they already know and that's also a time saver for the New users!
Incredible tutorial, this plug-in can save the day in so many instances, (provided you know how to use it). I had 'no idea' where to start and you have totally saved the day again. Thank you for caring enough to provide this help, it's fantastic. cheers!
You are the best. Happy to know you can do stuff like this on stock plugins from FL. Thank you very much!!
