He was and is one the best RBs to ever play. We should put absolutely zero shade on Todd. Health often is managible, but sometimes things happen to our bodies that we cannot do anything to change. Outside of prayer, faith, science, exercise, rest, and good eating habits the body does wear down and we do have a bell curve to our physical climb, peak, and decline. It's a fact. Todd's bell curve wasn't something he wanted at all. Nobody did, in fact. But sometimes this happens. Plus, lets not lose sight that football is a full contact sport with elite, large, and very strong humans and there is a point in every person that you will break. Living in LA, I loved Todd and I still do. He was a smart, talented, and elite human on the field and NOTHING can ever take that away from him. He still holds records and was one of Georgia's all time, best RBs. TB, #30 was a freak!

The NFC Championship game in New Orleans was brutal for Todd, who let a dink pass bounce off his hands into a Saints INT inside the Rams 20 on the teams first possession. He later dropped an easy pass in the red zone that would've been a first down. He did have TD run in the game but did not have a good game, and McVay basically just sat him. Nerves? Knee? Coach? The Rams were never truthful about what was going on with Gurley at the end of 2018 and into 2019 after giving him the huge contract. He had good games against the Panthers, Bears, Steelers, Cardinals & Seahawks 2nd games and Falcons in 2019 but was never consistent and much of that had to do with not getting touches in games. The Tampa Bay game comes to mind where he got 5 carries in a 55-40 loss. He did miss the 1st 49ers game with an undisclosed injury. His release along with Brandin Cooks in early 2020 was a shocker given their recent contracts and prominence in the LA market. Gurley was the face of the Rams from 2016-2019, and they just cut him. The Rams made a habit of signing stars to big extensions and then throwing them away. Gurley (knee?), Cooks (concussions?), Goff (contract/play?), Brockers (contract?) and Woods (knee injury?). The team even tossed Johnny Hekker without a thank you one. Brutal. I've always wondered if Gurley shone too bright for an insecure but wildly successful young coach in LA, and it was always more about ego than injury. Same for Jared Goff. Thanks for the fine segment!

  • @thecantankerouscollector

There were other issues too. His attitude got worse. I remember when the Rams opened the season in 2019, the year after appearing in the Super Bowl, the announcer for the game I was watching listed the Rams captains and Gurley wasn't one of them. He was a captain the previous years so I thought that was strange. A member in a Rams forum I used to read also mentioned Gurley couldn't find his helmet when asked to go in in the second half of the game in Pittsburgh, a game in which he had a great first half and a game we should have won. Things were generally kept quiet but there was a mention of him being a cancer in the locker room. I thought he was awesome and he seemed like a real good dude until after the Super Bowl when things soured. My Rams have a bunch of great running backs in their history and he was one of them.

Great overview of his career, thought the pacing from college to draft thru ups & downs with the Rams was really on point. Her speaking style (like how she delivers the lines) always strikes me as really good too. The Death Express
When The Death Express rolls up to your door, the things that you’re doing, right or wrong you can’t do anymore! Life on earth is short at its best, for we all are facing the acid test.
So when writing the poem (of life) make it rhyme, and it must be written on the shores of time. We must write it by faith, though we all like to see. But we can’t write this poem in eternity, so don’t sit on your seat until you hear the beep, get up and start now, awake out of your sleep!
What am I sending on the other side?
Before The Death Express comes (those wheels) to give us our ride?
So get busy, do good, and get involved.
And when The Death Express comes, your problems will be solved. Slow down; slow down, so that you may learn, don’t run ahead of our leader, you don’t know where to turn. Learn how to give, how to bear, how to share, Learn how to do good to men everywhere. Now you can watch for the signs as we go. Stay under the blood of Jesus, that washes white as snow. .
When The Death Express rolls up to give you your first ride, who is your escort, with a heart full of pride? Too proud to listen, too stubborn to hear, But Wait! Those wheels, those dreadful wheels are rolling near. There’s an escort for every one and who will yours be? I want Jesus in the Holy Ghost to escort me! Speaking of space, there’s room to spare, for this train picks up men everywhere. It transport the rich and it transports the poor. It drops off one generation and returns for more.
Those wheels, those dreadful wheels, those death wheels. Let’s face the facts now, and turn around. For why would you let sin forever hold you down? Repent, quit, be baptized in Jesus Name for remission of sins, receive the Holy Ghost and He will escort you in!

RB is saddly a job not worth making as far as going in the NFL go.
Problem is, RB is a job with a lot of perceived replacement value and a lot of body usage wear and tear. So much that past their 4 first years, if you don't have the luckiest and fastest of them all, he won't worth signing the big bag his merits deserves (you sign for the future, not the past). Better go for a 2nd or 3rd rounder with a nice fit for your scheme which will achieve 70 to 90% of the guy you let go... as well as a backup for him and you'd still pay your whole special team and have change to spare.
QB's are overated and overpaid, RB are seen as not being worth resigning... maybe the main problem of offense is the lack of flashy plays from the unit which create most of it => the O-Line. There is no good team without a reliable O-Line, one that keeps your QB injury free and make space for your RB, but there is no "in the highlight stat" to make O-line shine (they do exist, but mainly in the depth of advanced metrics).
You wanna play NFL ? QB's are the center of most offensive stats (as if those stats are solely theirs), RB have rushing, WR receiving yards and YaC, tight end have both. Defense have sack, int, pressure and it's easy to shine as an individual because playing D in NFL is mostly pro-active (require great skill too). But dear old O-line ? no stats, and it's probably one of the toughest role to play cleanly, seeing that you can't grab, you have to stop great athletes using 70% bull rushes and aiming to get past you and you have to account for the fact that O-Line succeed as a unit (if one fail, the down is lost) while defense succeed as an individual (one arm is enough to strip a ball) but still scheme as a team. Makes it hard for anyone but the hardcorest dirt loving fan to pay attention to them. And so to buy jerseys, and so to pay O-Lines.
Sorry if you feel it's a rant about O-line, it's not, I just wanted to put context about why (Imho) we will see many more RB disappearing because of injuries => overpriced, and underprotected past their rookie contracts due to overpricing QB's a lot and not setting them up adequately for continued success.

It was "girly" not to admit that Todd's busted knee was not holding up. Todd's football career ended early because of the knee injury.

Great vid as always! Feel like MJD would be right up your alley too in terms of his downfall. Great player, led the league in rushing yards in 2011, had a nasty contract holdout in 2012, then came back and suffered a season-ending injury a month later, and was never the same

Is ironic that most of the RB’s that came in league out of Georgia careers ended with the same type of knee injuries and this goes all the way back to Garrison Hearst.

Speaking as someone with arthritis, arthritis is more of a broad category of chronic pain related to joints. It can be from wear and tear but it can also be an autoimmune disease. Gout is a type of arthritis too. It can be passed down through genetics but it can also just decide to pop up for a number of reasons. Arthritis can look and feel like a bunch of different types of injuries. Especially when in the knee it can be a real problem to sort out what’s the issue. It can also go dormant for a while and it can also flare up badly. It’s basically impossible to say when for certain Gurly’s arthritis began since he was an athlete

    Knees.
It wasn't a cover up. Its why LA dropped him in "prime". Understand, he did what he did on one leg. His entire career was with a bad knee. Massive what if?

    • @albaestrada8603
      @albaestrada8603 3 месяца назад

Wow, imagine if his knees were that bad already and he was that great with avoiding certain tackles because he knew his knee couldn't handle it. That's crazy to think he could have been better and more physical if he didn't have that injury concern. One of the great modern what ifs

Todd Gurley II was such a BadAss Running Back with the Bulldogs of UGA like no doubt he was tremendously so amazing to watch but in the 2015 NFL Draft he's a 1st Round 10th overall by the Rams he didn't disappoint from Day-1 winning Rookie of the year but in 2017 he won NFL's Offensive player of the year but in 2018 he went to his 1st Super Bowl trip but LOST to the Patriots so in 2020 he went to the Falcons then 3 Years Later he Vanished out of thin air
