I was at this show! I had just been introduced to the Dead that summer and it was my third show. This is when I really got “it” and from then on felt like being married to the Grateful Dead. ❤
I heard someone once ( a fellow musician like me) refer to it as 'surviving your encouragement ", whether that's a bad day, week, month at some job you don't like, a trip to the in-laws, a jail term ( hopefully not that), or pretty much any situation where you can't fully be your authentic self. I think most of us find ourselves there. Can also be a bout of depression, anxiety, whatever. If we all just hold on tight during those times, we will make it through to the other side!!
I have never yet figured out what to do about good advice that you get, and that you know right away would help you, but that you cannot follow. That’s when you turn to Jerry.
Did you hear all that cheering at the beginning of Bird Song? One of those voices is mine. I worked security for that show on New Year's Eve '87 as a Bill Graham Presents Bluecoat in what I thought was going to be my final show before retiring after nearly a decade of working security. Well as it turned out I wasn't quite done yet and I went on to work another 5 years worth of Dead shows, *laughing*. Bird Song has always been one of my favorite Jerry Garcia sung Dead toonz, especially because of the jam in the middle. This was a great performance and I can still remember swaying with all the other Deadheads while standing in the pit behind the barricade on the floor of the Oakland Coliseum. I worked every Grateful Dead New Year's Eve show from 1979 to 1991, and this was one of my favorites. Thank you so much for this groovy Bird Song.
