Lots of ZF reviews being made at the moment, including some really nice ones - like yours - focused on the creative side / inspiration, etc. There was GxAce's doozy: 'Weaponised Nostagia', 6 days ago. I love the Zf and absolutely use it often without the smallrig grip. Not the most comfortable to hold but it also cuts down the weight and frame size so it helps.
I use a Nikon D7000 for all of my photos, a 14 year old camera that was bought 14 years ago. Even though I've tried better cameras and I could buy a better one if I really really wanted to, I've never felt the need for an upgrade. This is the camera my dad bought when I was a kid and used for years until he couldn't continue photography. Then a few years later when I got back into photography alongside some friends, I took it up. I've learned a ton of stuff while using it and will continue to until it corrupts every photo that comes out (which unfortunately seems like it'll be very soon.) Using a camera that my dad used, passed onto me, and have been using for a few years now just adds something to my experience with photography that i could never get with another camera.
I have a z6 II and a z8. I don't need this camera but I want one. But I also want the z6 III for the partial stacked sensor. I have 5 film cameras. 3 are full manual cameras. One is the Nikon FM2N. I also have a Canon rebel 2000 someone gave me and a Nikon F4. Both have a manual mode but they also have auto modes. So when it comes down to that cool retro tactile feel, I have that covered. I saw a video about the auto ISO on the zf that explained it. It kind of makes sense the way they did it. I think we're just used to doing it in a different way. I love my 40mm. You are so right on the quality of the optics. I put it up there with my 85mm f/1.8 s lens. Set it to f/2 and put it along something like a stone wall or maybe flowers and see how close you can get. Look at how shallow the depth of field is. It's almost like a macro lens but without the 1:1 representation on the screen. I bought it for street photography. I now have a 28mm and I use it the most now. It's also an incredible little cheap lens.
I'm really happy to see that Nikon is back in the game with their recent releases. The more competition there is in the market the better for us users. As a Canon user I also really envy this retro inspired camera. I wish Canon would create something that resembled one of their SLR or range finder bodies from the past. Also, happy to see that you've (hopefully) enjoyed a stay in Poland, my home country. You should visit it when it's snowing too... and the spring, and the summer 😅 plus there's so much more to explore than just Warsaw - for example Gdańsk, Kraków, Wrocław. It's easy to fall in love with some of those places, and they're outstandingly good for street photography as well :)
this perfectly describes the feeling of when i upgraded from my 2017 nikon d3200, my very first camera, and bought the z5 and a new lens with it. I was so excited to just get out and shoot. i hope nikon gives you this camera as a thankyou xd
I know the F2Z adapter doesn't support AF-D lenses, but I highly recommend the AF-D 80-200 f/2.8 (2 ring version) if you have a camera that can handle screwdrive autofocus. I just got one for $300 USD and it's AMAZING for the price. All metal and glass, I'm pretty sure the only plastic is the grip rings. It's a pro full frame lens for Consumer DX lens price, and it works great on my D80.
@@huntercreatesthings You try taking well framed pictures of wildlife and chickens without scaring them away using a 28mm. XP Heck, even my dog will get up and leave if he realizes I'm trying to take a picture.
@@huntercreatesthings I live in a pretty rural area and have social anxiety, so chickens and landscapes it is for me. XP I can see the wide lens being a lot more useful in the city, yeah. I passed on it when it first came out... I had bought a used Z6ii... So I waited and did the Z8 tradeup from my D850. A year later: I keep my Z8 on the shelf and am only using my Z6ii and my Z50. I'm gonna give my Z6ii to a friend and buy the now discounted Zf. I thought i needed the Z8.... Great video!
Genuinely curious: what keeps you from grabbing the Z8 rather than the Z6ii when you leave home? I have a Z8 on loan at the moment, and I find it very exciting compared to my Zf or to any camera I ever owned. Weight? It is around 100g more than a Zf with accessory grip. That is really not much of a difference. And it is in fact easier to carry in my right hand, ready to shoot, simply because it is better designed for that. I find the Z8 snappy, fun to use, much easier to customise, perfectly balanced, and the 45MP give me peace of mind when framing. I know I have plenty of room to crop, change aspect ratio, etc. I am now thinking of investing in a Z8 of my own, and pondering if I'd throw the Zf into the swap bag. But then I see other users pondering the exact opposite, and am second guessing myself. Sorry for long rant. So, what keeps you from loving your Z8?

I wanted a full frame sensor and I felt like something that slowed me down would be helpful for my creativity. It didn’t hurt that the Zf is an aesthetically appealing camera I want to bring everywhere!
My favorite new camera in quite a long time! Auto-ISO - agreed, all I need is for the manual ISO dial to instantly disable Auto-ISO when selecting a manual ISO setting. Wish it had IBIS Lock when the camera is off (like every other Nikon) but I'm not jogging with the Zf so I suppose it's ok. The simple little instant B&W mode switch is probably my favorite feature. I bought the Zf last fall thinking I'd sell it when the Z6III released, and here we are a year later and it doesn't leave my side. 😎📷
I am considering getting this camera. Currently I own Z5 with 24-120 and Zfc with 24/1.7 and 16-50. Zfc is my prefered choice, even though it is way worse than Z5 (as you said - work tool vs something to make art with). Do you think that it is worth getting the Zf if I would sell my current setup? Its just my hobby, Zfc is way ahead of my needs, but Zf is sooo pretty. I would keep 24-120, but the rest would go away towards getting Zf. Thank you!
The Zf is on sale here in the U.S. right now. I bought the Zf a year ago and recently sold my D750 because I picked it up one day and realized I hadn't used it for a year. And after that day of shooting with it again I didn't want to shoot it again. The 40mm f2 is pretty much glued onto the Zf. I have the 28mm f2.8, but rarely use it. I do plan on using some of my old manual focus screw mount film lenses on it (with adaptor) when a suitable event comes up.
I had a D750 abd then I switched to Sony for af. While images come out really good, at times I miss Nikon and was thinking to add one. How are the colors and images of ZF when compared to D750? Are z lenses clinical compared to f mount?
I have the Zfc and I like using it. I definitely agree about the Auto-ISO since there really isn't a great indicator of whether it's on or not - you have to look at the ISO on the screen as it'll say there, and then the ISO dial just becomes the minimum ISO it'll use. Though given your description of the 40mm f/2, I think I'll have to try it out. Since it's a pretty inexpensive lens. Though for the Zfc, the 28mm f/2 will probably be better since the Zfc is DX format, not FX.
Midway through summer, I bought the Fujifilm X-T5 and I love it. I feel the way you said about the Zf. So naturally, GAS tells me to sell all my Fuji gear and get the Zf. ;) Ah, logical brains. It's funny how you used the oven clip in the intro and I was like, "Is Hunter doing the GxAce thing, but only using an oven?" Then, later, you had a story reason for it, and I was like, "Ohhhhhh." Love your work, man.
Love and miss dials in my z6II. Often get out the old FE and play with it. Wonder if the ZF or any model could be more compact if they left out the video capability. Cheers
Got ZF in March (traded away a D750 and SONY a6300 toward cost) this year and it's taken long to get control. That is, for ISO and Exposure Comp. use. So after all, my preferred use of Zf is Manual. A must then, is auto ISO off and bracketing off; otherwise I've found the EC top dial, and any in menu (such as i-Menu) is fully disabled. ZF ISO change is more frustrating. with any autoISO/ shutter functions enabled, no matter what you turn the number too, by any camera menu or 'dial; button, in taking photos is NOT changed. In those cases, to leave other settings the same, I change the ISO number and turn camera off then on... which is a ridiculous way to go. I am NOT sure if this is similarly so in DSLR< even though I am keeping a D810 and some F-lenses! In addition to M, in good light and or for test or record pics, I go to Auto. And love using B+W lever. Can set EC dial. I use Aperture priority less than these. Manual works for me in making any changes on the fly, and the fast changes in light downtown etc. in NYC walk-around.
Nice video. I've had a Zf for 4 months, and I'm happy with it in spite of its quirks (which I knew about before buying it). You didn't mention the B&W switch, which is one of my favourite features. Any reason for that?
“Twisting our brains up in knots not doing the thing we love”. TRUTHS. Also adds Art & Fear to reading list. I love the look of the Zf, but too financially involved with Fuji.
I shoot sports with the zf it aint that bad i just hold underneath the lens and have a strap so i dont have to hold it all the time along with the grip accessory the af system is great too
A person who primarily uses olympus/oms it is a special camera. But I didn't find the camera special with nikon lenses. I hated nikon lenses. But when I got the voigtlander 40mm 1.2 then it became something magical. And absolutely no extra grip with it. Tried it, returned it. Ruins everything about what makes the camera and style special with this camera. I just transfer everything wifi. But you cant transfer video wifi like you can with olympus/oms. So then I just plug it into the camera with cables instead of taking out the sd cards. Not removing sd cards since 2016 I believe has kept me from never having one going bad on me.
I find myself not shooting as much with my sony a6600 after upgrading from the lumix gx9, it didn't "spark joy". Only after I bought an old sony Nex-5n paired with a ttartisan 27mm pancake lens it's fun again to shoot.
As for sd card compartment. I’ve got used using wifi download process, it’s so much more easier and smoother then jugglery with sd in and out every time.
@ sure thing, such amounts are completely another story. My view angle regarding the comment is sporadic non-commercial shooting. In such cases wifi completely makes sense for me.
Damn you got massive pockets that even fit that massive Zf. Yes, it's massive, which is one of the main reasons I won't buy it despite being tempted many times to pull the trigger. Waiting for Z5II. Good review though, really enjoyed it.
Thanks! The pockets on that jacket are absolutely cavernous tbh, one of the reasons I bought it. To me the ZF feels small compared to what I was using before, but I can definitely see the appeal of something a little more compact!
great video as usual, but i hate you for making it 😔 I'm shooting with a D750 myself but have been starting to get annoyed with the size of the camera and the lack of "aura". Apart from the D750 I've been playing with analog cameras a lot and I'm missing the haptics from them. For the past couple of weeks I've been thinking about getting a Nikon ZF because it seems to fill that gap perfectly (apart from the size maybe), especially because I could use all my other lenses on it (with adapters). Uggghhh, now i gotta go buy one. One last thing, did you find anything about the camera that annoyed you, compared to the D750?
Tbh I expected to want to use the D750 at points but no not really. It has much more advanced AF so sometimes it would focus on a face when I didn't want it to, mapping a button to toggle face detect fixed this. Other than dual full size SD, there's not really anything I'd change. Battery life was surprisingly good, I used it for a whole week and only charged it once!
If I can get Zf&Z6III&Z7II all at same price and I want to pair with 28-400mm lens and maybe 14-30mm in the future, which one make more sense as a fun camera to record everyday and artistic shoots of all kind, video are not as frequent I think. Zf Pro: Tactic experience and I can DIY wrap it in yellow colour which is my favourite color Con: Grip Z6III Pros: Speed but I don't need that and 4K 60fps nearly/full sensor 1080p 240fps Con: Lower DR close to APSC some said? Z7II Pros: 45mp but it isn't 2X noticeable resolution than 24mp and do that 28-400mm lens able to resolve the resolution? And also tilt screen Con: Not retro like Zf and might not able to wrap it in yellow colour and will it looks as good as Zf? Is Zf really make fun to use or its just hipster trend of wanting to expericene the older ways while the elder want the modern improvement way? People see Zf as beautiful but is it just a psychological play of nostalgia and one day DSLR and Mirrorless will be a beauty to the eyes once camera looks very different to the current look in the future?
ZF is really just that: fun. It's also pretty, which I think is important! Bear in mind that I didn't spend a lot of time testing video since I shoot video on Sony.
This camera is all over RUclips at the moment! Is Nikon sending this back out the creator’s because sales are slow??? Nikon, where are your lenses with aperture rings? Make some and you’re worth consideration
I bugged them for ages to get one for a review - if they hadn't sent it, I'd have rented it. Thing is, it's a stellar camera, which makes it great for making content around. I found that using this with adapted vintage lenses was superb, especially with the eye detect working even with manual focus. Worth a go!
There recently is an overload of videos on "X months experience with the Zf", which all follow the exact same format, have a few minor critical remarks, and contain little to no good photography although the videography is on point. I was in the market for this camera, but this looks a bit scripted from above and hence sus.
Kinda - a lot of us have to do both, and I think your relationship with a camera and how you use it can be the difference between work tool and art tool if that makes sense

Though for the Zfc, the 28mm f/2 will probably be better since the Zfc is DX format, not FX.
I also very much need to give the 28mm a go!
Forwarding this video onto my wife before arriving home with my new SL2 tomorrow 👍
Good luck soldier
Midway through summer, I bought the Fujifilm X-T5 and I love it. I feel the way you said about the Zf. So naturally, GAS tells me to sell all my Fuji gear and get the Zf. ;) Ah, logical brains. It's funny how you used the oven clip in the intro and I was like, "Is Hunter doing the GxAce thing, but only using an oven?" Then, later, you had a story reason for it, and I was like, "Ohhhhhh."
Love your work, man.
Thank you so much Chris!
Happy you're happy! That's what it's all about. I found my happy camera in the local shop as well, spec sheets be damned.
I love that book, always inspires me. Great video!
Thank you!!!
Wow! I’ve been following you for a while and didn’t notice that you are in Poland. Cheers!
Dziękuję!
The jokes are written and delivered beautifully!
Thank you!
Awesome camera. Only downsides are the ergonomics (without extra grip) and the flip screen. Would prefer a screen like on the XT5.
Yeah you definitely need the grip. I actually quite like the flippy screen because I can close it and use the camera viewfinder only
An X-Pro3 style flip down screen would be far better than the silly flip out screen @@huntercreatesthings It's the biggest thing I hate about the Zf.
Love and miss dials in my z6II. Often get out the old FE and play with it. Wonder if the ZF or any model could be more compact if they left out the video capability. Cheers
Maybe - I didn't get to fully test the video, but the few clips I did get came out super! I think with an updated log curve it could be a real sleeper
Warsaw at the beginning? Then hello from Poland as well :D
Tak! Thanks for watching :)
I like the B&W switch but it's fairly straightforward to do with a custom button on most mirrorless cameras, which is why I didn't mention it :)
Yes, totally agree。
“Twisting our brains up in knots not doing the thing we love”. TRUTHS.
Also adds Art & Fear to reading list.
I love the look of the Zf, but too financially involved with Fuji.
Fuji cameras are also super, I just personally prefer full frame for stills :) I do love the x100 though...
I shoot sports with the zf it aint that bad i just hold underneath the lens and have a strap so i dont have to hold it all the time along with the grip accessory the af system is great too
Nice
Fair, I've heard great things about that voightlander! I do like Nikon glass, but that could just be a familiarity thing
Great video, I really enjoy the files I get from the ZF, and the 40mm makes easy to travel with, I do wish it was smaller
Same here!
Seems we've walked similar paths. I just sold my trusty D750 to upgrade to the Zf. It's been a worthwhile transition.
Glad to hear it! I'm nervous to let go of mine.
I am missing this town, Warszawa!
I'm very blessed to live here! One of the most beautiful places I've ever been
I find myself not shooting as much with my sony a6600 after upgrading from the lumix gx9, it didn't "spark joy".
Only after I bought an old sony Nex-5n paired with a ttartisan 27mm pancake lens it's fun again to shoot.
Hell yeah!
I love this feel! Reminds me a little of gx ace
Thank you!
I get so many compliments on my Zf, everyone always thinks it’s a film camera lol
Haha is the oven a GxAce reference?
I laughed out loud assuming it was!
As for sd card compartment. I’ve got used using wifi download process, it’s so much more easier and smoother then jugglery with sd in and out every time.
Wi-Fi is great but I tend to shoot a lot and transferring 20gb of files to an external drive is much easier with SD
@ sure thing, such amounts are completely another story. My view angle regarding the comment is sporadic non-commercial shooting. In such cases wifi completely makes sense for me.
The camera in an oven got me lol
I was laughing while filming it tbh hahaha
i shot my gf's tennis photos and trust me even with older 70-200 vrii, the autofocus and files are love. totally suprised.
Nice!!!
I really want to try this camera but I don’t think it would become my ‘sparks joy’ camera simply because of the size and weight.
imo it's really not that big or heavy but that might just be me coming from Camerasaurus Rex being my normal
Great video 🙏🙏 subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
Thats a very nice camera but sadly nikon doesnt support it with small good lenses. We need a 35 and 50mm 2.8
Lucky for me my default lenses are 28 and 40 anyway
Feel the same way with Canon's R10
great video as usual, but i hate you for making it 😔
I'm shooting with a D750 myself but have been starting to get annoyed with the size of the camera and the lack of "aura".
Screw the smallrig grip , get the neewer CA07 grip ; thank me later . Gives you the thumb support
Will investigate
Pickupbility. Gonna use that word often now.
If I can get Zf&Z6III&Z7II all at same price and I want to pair with 28-400mm lens and maybe 14-30mm in the future, which one make more sense as a fun camera to record everyday and artistic shoots of all kind, video are not as frequent I think.
Zf
Pro: Tactic experience and I can DIY wrap it in yellow colour which is my favourite color
Con: Grip
Z6III
Pros: Speed but I don't need that and 4K 60fps nearly/full sensor 1080p 240fps
Con: Lower DR close to APSC some said?
Z7II
Pros: 45mp but it isn't 2X noticeable resolution than 24mp and do that 28-400mm lens able to resolve the resolution? And also tilt screen
Con: Not retro like Zf and might not able to wrap it in yellow colour and will it looks as good as Zf?
Is Zf really make fun to use or its just hipster trend of wanting to expericene the older ways while the elder want the modern improvement way? People see Zf as beautiful but is it just a psychological play of nostalgia and one day DSLR and Mirrorless will be a beauty to the eyes once camera looks very different to the current look in the future?
ZF is really just that: fun. It's also pretty, which I think is important! Bear in mind that I didn't spend a lot of time testing video since I shoot video on Sony.
I've never heard anyone describe bokeh as al dente
It’s just like any other camera.
Have you tried one
This camera is all over RUclips at the moment! Is Nikon sending this back out the creator’s because sales are slow??? Nikon, where are your lenses with aperture rings? Make some and you’re worth consideration
I bugged them for ages to get one for a review - if they hadn't sent it, I'd have rented it. Thing is, it's a stellar camera, which makes it great for making content around. I found that using this with adapted vintage lenses was superb, especially with the eye detect working even with manual focus. Worth a go!
Buy one. Got rid of my Fujis and one of my leicas because it’s that good.
I believe you!
im pretty sure its a camera. no need to be any more, it takes the images you want it to, that makes it perfectly sufficient
Objects, especially machines, have soul.
@ *you* have soul
The lore of megapickles needs unraveling. Are they larger than normal pickles? More tasty? More powerful? Please advise
Biblically accurate megapickles are the gold standard
First? My first first?
Wow
i came here to comment first but you won
Proud of u
00:10 why it's in the oven
Let me cook
YOU SAY MEGAPICKLES TO?????
Creators trying to hype the Zf all together out of nowhere all of a sudden like it hasn't existed for the past year. Odd.
Genuinely a coincidence - I had already written this when GxAce's video came out, and was writing when Sammy's one did!!
100% not sponsored.
@huntercreatesthings fair enough. I love the Zf so I guess I cant blame anyone, lol.
This is sponsored, right?
Nope. I begged Nikon to lend me a press camera for weeks. I sent it back to them and no money changed hands!
There recently is an overload of videos on "X months experience with the Zf", which all follow the exact same format, have a few minor critical remarks, and contain little to no good photography although the videography is on point. I was in the market for this camera, but this looks a bit scripted from above and hence sus.
I give my word that this video was entirely my idea, and 0% sponsored. Also, rude about my photography! I did my best with the time I had.
That’s why I got an M. The ultimate fun useless camera 🤣
Second to none!
Let me suggest a more meaningful title to your well-made video - "Its More Than The Camera". 😂
I'll keep my XT5, the Nikon is a brick.
XT-5 is super! I guess to me the ZF feels light compared to my usual rig
When people refer to their camera as "just a tool", I believe these are the people who care more about making money than creating art.
Kinda - a lot of us have to do both, and I think your relationship with a camera and how you use it can be the difference between work tool and art tool if that makes sense
Obwiniam cię za aukcję na eBayu M5. :P
👀👀👀
Second
So close
Nikon advertisement is too agressive. People are going to start hating it soon
It's been out for nearly a year already, that probably would've already happened by now.
Not an ad, just my opinion
You like the retro look of the camera. End of story lol
No not really, hence the further 8 minutes of video
Street photography is junk for the most part
You'll love my other videos
No just your comment 😊
