Here's What Happens When a Carpenter does Electronics

- The outside of the case is made from solid maple and the top panel is 1/8" thick aluminum painted black. I finished the wood with three coats of waterbased polyurethane.
I love the simple, clean lines and the stark contrast between the painted black parts and the warm natural wood and amber glow from the meters.
The project uses an LM4780 dual channel chip amp that can put out around 50 watts rms into 8 ohm speakers. Not super powerful, but the speakers I built this for don't need a lot of power.
I designed and made the PCB for the chip amp, but wound up redoing the design and making a new circuit board when I made too many mistakes on the first one. All part of the fun!
Also inside the amp case is another circuit board that has an active filter that cuts out the bass. The amp is more than capable of full range output, but I don't want any low frequencies going to the small speakers and the active filter does that.
I built this amp for these speakers: • Amazing Sound and Cool...
NOTE: The chip amp I used for this is obsolete now, but I have a few from when I was much deeper into electronics 15 years ago.

John - you a man of many talents. I do not even know what the thing does but it looks very smooth and polished.
Hi found pics of this in some random google search some 4 months back. It became my inspiration and I have made and completed an amp with similar design.
Really stumped seeing that same amp pic in video!!
Thanks!!
Wonderful!
amazing, john, you are a genius
Videos under 10 minutes and straight to the point? What a treat!
I've been designing and building electronics, both personally and professionally, for over 40 years. Never built anything that looked this pretty. That woodcraft really brought it to the next level.
Thank you for jumping right into it John! I find myself skipping the first 1-2 minutes of everyone else's useless introduction and subscription/like begging. If your content is good, one shouldn't need to ask. And by the way, you never cease to amaze me with your design and all-around building skills.
I hate the sales pitch every damn video include, I don't need to hear your motivation or family history for me to watch the video. Just roll 1 minute of end credits and bloopers if you need the add money.
They do it (usually at the end or in the middle) because it does indeed increase the subscription rate.
Simple statistics.
I agree completely with the sentiment, but I think as everything in life balance is key.
Very brief introduction would be best. I came from an automatic playlist and had no context for example.
Agree with jeff
Yeah long intros are only for super fans. And John covers super fans with other channels/means
Looks fantastic! Great work, John. I really like the gap through the center. It adds a lot more than I would have thought.
Thanks Drew :)
I liked it too
I don't watch John's videos as often as I used to. But I must mention, everytime I see that table saw it puts a smile on my face. Incredible work you do big man👏🏾
that is absolutely beautiful!
Thanks David :)
Good Lord! This thing is as gorgeous inside as out. Amazing work.
I just gotta say, straight and to the point, love it, no long intro I have to skip thru. This video is also amazing that you just build something and design it and poof it exists. It kind of blows my mind I have to say.
That's an amazing project! You make cool stuff and your voice overs and videography/production is just as amazing! Thank you.
Jesus, what rock have I been hiding under to have missed this beautiful channel!
Thank you John for sharing your incredible work with all of us.
Subscribed 90 seconds in.
Cheers, John
You are taking this to a new level John. I love the details - maple case, the backlit VU meters, the center reveal... Macintosh will be copying your style!
Hi John, this is a really slick design I love it. I've stopped etching PCB's a long time ago, it's nice to see that some people still does that. But it's also true that most of the PCB's I design have some surface mount piece on them and it's quite hard to etch surface mount for an hobbyist. But I'm super impressed of your amplifier
Thanks, I used a mix in my newest multi-channel amp where I made the power supply boards, but ordered the ones for the amps and crossover boards.
I really like the professionally made ones, but then you have to wait for them to get here, and they are less forgiving if you've made a mistake that needs to be fixed.
@@JohnHeisz I know I make mistakes and I have to fix them with wire wrap wires. But I always fill the empty spaces with pads so if I forgot a component I can put it there, so most of my PCB's have wire wrap wires😉 But between $1.50 to $6 for 10 PCB's I can wait a couple of weeks, having a silkscreen is heaven. I use a lot of ESP32 but only the modules not the development board so it's easy to solder them in place with silk screen, but I elongate the pads I didn't build my oven yet so I have to use a soldering iron. We're far from what I've learned in college with black sticking strip and UV system.
Not only unique, but the level of professionalism in the fit and finish created a working piece of art, well done!
I forgot you make videos, what a pleasant surprise
Definitely prefer jumping right in, and this build is really inspiring. I’m at the very beginning of my woodworking life and as a composer I’d love to start incorporating music technology into a builds, so this was really helpful. Thanks so much for sharing.
incredible. simply incredible camera work, editing, voice over, and of course the actual woodworking and electronics build! love it!
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship! No fuss straight into it. Love your style
I accidentally stumbled onto this video and from the first words you spoke to the very last one I was in AWE! Your craftsmanship is outstanding! The entire video was incredible!
Beautifully smart John, a really nice design. Recycling old parts is a nice idea too - they have a certain feel that new stuff lacks.
Straight to the point is appreciated. I enjoy your videos, thanks John.
THANK YOU for getting straight to the point and just going on with the build.
Love all the electronics stuff you make, incorporating woodworking!
That is a thing of beauty. Lovely work. That upcycled power switch was perfect!
I have no idea what this person's making I'm just happy I didn't have to fast forward 10 minutes to figure that out. I'm going to subscribe.
I definitely appreciate you getting right into the content on your videos.
I also appreciate the preview of the finished project.
As always. Great stuff....
Absolutely Beautiful John!
Yes, finally, someone who knows how to make informational videos. Well recorded and to the point. Subscribed.
Amazing project, John! Just beautiful craftsmanship with so much love to details.
I absolutely appreciate the direct to content style. Awesome video as ever, thanks for continuing to make these videos
I luved watching this process, I also loved that you got straight down to it.
Awesome job again John
Great work, the genie is in putting it all together, from about everywhere !
Thanx a lot for getting to the point right away! SO many RUclips videos use 3 min or more (sometimes half their playing time) to talk about what they’re gonna talk about 🙄
Straight to the point, yes, absolutely. I don't understand why anyone wants to watch the same intro to every program, tv show etc. Thank you john.
Love when you combine audio with woodwork. I like to build portable speakers out of good hardwoods and other materials.
Nicely done John!
Love it John! Such a sleek design and it looks beautiful. Well done 😁
Reminds me of a briefcase, like it wants to be opened on hinges. Beautiful result
What a wonderful job! Contrats and thanks for sharing!
What an absolutely stunning design! Simple yet elegant! :)
love it John! Keep up the amazing content!
Very inspiring. Love how you get straight to it, short, sweet video.
Now that is a great job John, very well done👍👍👍
Wonderful work! The button looks like the ones at my good old 70's Marantz Stereophonic Receiver. :)
Nicely done. Glad to see you're still into this stuff.
Very impressive! Beautiful clean lines... beautiful classic hardwood and black metal. Excellent fit of all the parts. Very nice!
Just amazing! Impressed by the multi-disciplines involved!
Just simply beautiful!
Awesome build!
This looks like the sort of amplifier which would cost thousands of dollars at an audiophile catalog. Nice work!
It probably would cost a fair bit. John would probably make you one if you covered the materials and labour. Bet it would be a surprising amount.
Absolutely agree with you
Wow, you’re a genius. The case is beautiful craftsmanship, and the electronics were so neat and clean looking. Thank you for sharing all your hard work.
What a lovely build
Beautiful, minimalistic.
Great job John. 👍🏻👋🏼
Beautiful work!
Beautiful piece!
Outstanding craftsmanship.
I can get pretty far with an electronics project, but the enclosure always stumps me. This level of skill is something for me to aspire to.
Beautiful work, sir.
This was a masterpeice , you are the person who connected the gap between Carpentry and the Electronics.
Beautiful build and nice edit!
Cool, that looks very well made!
Stunning design
Perhaps the most beautiful combination between carpentry and electonics. Esthetic and simplicity.
Beautiful work! Nice contemporary design and that in wood.
Holy moly dude that looks amazing!!!!!!
STUNNING!
i love videos that get to the point! thank you so much :)
That is a spectacular work of art! That was a pleasure to watch.
Phantastic Video and great inspiration !
Gorgeous! Amazing project…
yes sir! i hate all those who talk for five minuts telling what they're gonna do instead of showing it. that's why i like your vids. thank you for your content
That is a beautiful build!
Amazing craftsmanship!!
Awesome work!
Beautiful piece.
Used to do this in my electronics class in High school. Awesome job 👍
That is one seriously good looking piece of kit.
Very nicely done John.
Made quite a few speakers myself and just finishing my second tube amplifier. Great hobby.
My absolute favourite type of content!
Beautiful work, sir!
probably haven't watched a video from this channel in over 2 years but from what I do remember about loving your channel is how you could feel the passion through every moment that you sit and enjoy. But I understand catering to a larger audience requires changing to the smaller attention span viewers who was fast everything. Anyways love your stuff, miss even more the old stuff.
Very gorgeous minimalist amp!
Thanks for not adding 10 minutes of fluff. Well done, nice you got right down to it. Best of all, that was some awesome work.
Beautiful piece mate❤
Beautiful!
That's gorgeous!
Very cool! Great looking too!
Wow... this looks awesome.... Good work 👍
You brought our years back genuinely nostalgic.
straight to it. love it. liked and subscribed!
I'm relieved that your soldering looks perfectly acceptable. Seeing inexperienced people soldering kills my soul.
The vertical CNC mount is an elegant idea, thank you
Great Project john
Very nice. A beautiful piece actually. And functional. I too have an interest in both woodworking and electronics. Being "between workshops" at the moment, this gave me a much needed fix - thank you.
Woodworking + electronics, excellent! Thanks.
Very cool, and the little round meter are a great addition.
I love that you’re a true DIY kinda guy. It looks like a million bucks. Nice touch with the top and hiding the screws. Only thing i might do would be to engrave a signature on the front. Give it a little razzle dazzle
