Today (8/19/24), I am now the proud owner of my own Lenovo Thinkpad W701DS. I got mine used and in pretty rough condition, with a dead battery and the door for the PC Card MIA... Though she is a strong unit, and she's taken a Windows 10 installation proudly. When I looked at the specifications, I was impressed. I knew this laptop was rare, and followed the advice of this exact video to pick it up. I collect laptops, and this one is a real treat. i7-Q720 @ 1.6GHz, 20GB DDR3-1600, 128GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, and an Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M. P.S. Snappy Driver Installer got my finger print scanner working on Windows 10 Pro.
Also nice model M keyboard you got there on your old desktop. The displays sounds a lot like the display my W530 has. It's a TN panel too, 1920x1080, and it is awesome. I will say, 2k resolution on a laptop is really nice IMO. Although I agree with you that 4k is overrated, and unnecessary. Not just for laptops, but in general with computers. Unless you have at least like a 30 inch screen, ideally bigger.
i have 32 gb in my 701ds in windows 10, and pick up one of these, Lenovo ThinkPad W700 Mini Dock 2.0 Laptop Notebook Docking Station 57Y4345, the bottom usb on the left side is also a sata port
So of course I just had to check prices on eBay and....well, I'll hope to find my unicorn in the wild because I am too cheap to pay over $1000 for this. Having said that, this is super cool! :D
It can actually take a max of 32gb of ram, the reason it states 16gb max is because they didn't really have 8gb ram sticks at the time. This only applies to laptops with i7 quad cores with 4 ram slots though, if you've only got a dual core or two ram slots then you are limited to 16gb. Personally i find that 8gb is plenty for me though.
You wouldn't NEED more than 4GB of ram if you would just switch to linux. Sure, it would still feel like a worthwhile upgrade. But you wouldn't feel erm... desperate like you inevitably do using Winbloat.
finally i find some one who appreciate the past products like the thick laptop instead .. im already burning inside since the modern laptop removed the CD AND DVD room OHH MAN THIS IS SUCKs .. REMOVING THE DVD ROOM IS TOTALLY FUCKED UP i have 100s of DVDs that work in my laptop .. & they removed it when i tried to buy new laptop NOW I HAVE TO BUY THE DVD ROOM SEPARATELY to waste 1 of the already only 3 usb in the new laptops.. nice job .. mark my word next time they gonna remove the mouse pad to make it more thinner & the keyboard will be touch like mobiles .. what a complete shame
Really old laptops didn't have touchpads either(And lots of old Thinkpads included). DVDs are not really mainstream anymore, you could just suck it up and live with 1 less USB port. NO NEED TO MAKE LIKE ONE THIRD OF YOUR COMMENT SHOUTING.
Owning a W700DS is a life goal, i allready own most of my dream machines including but not limited to Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 Samsung Q1 (got the Ultra) Fujitsu F-07C Dell XPS M2010 Alienware M7700 Alienware M9700i-R1 Still waiting on a Transnote and a W700DS (701 is too rare)
Best of luck finding them. Since that I'm not buying computer equipment anymore I'd recommend looking at fromjapan, they're a proxy shipping company. There's a big supply of this stuff in Japan just keep in mind the shipping/import fees, depending on what you buy it could be a lot.

Your machine should have the same Xrite Huey Pro colorimeter as my W510, the Huey software works fine for me under Windows 10, you just need to make sure you have the lenovo power management driver installed. That being said I absolutely do not recommend using the Huey software to perform the calibration. You still need it to make sure the screen doesn't shut off when you close the lid, just kill it with task manager after hitting 'start', then use DisplayCal to do the work. The difference is huge, the Huey software takes barely any measurements and results in weird colour casts, honestly it's worse than if you didn't calibrate at all.
Mmmm the G series are very cool. I passed up on a lot of them a couple months ago. 5 G41's for $100. At this point tho I have too many computers and I wouldn't have a use for them.

Honestly, these are only going to get more expensive. Unless if a warehouse of thousands of them are found, I'd buy the now while they're still around 1k. Of course you could try your luck with ebay auctions. In a couple years they'll probably go for 2k. I regret not getting the 701C when it was around $200(buy it now price). I thought that was an absurd price to pay for a laptop. Now they easily go $500 sometimes over 1k

You can snap windows with super+arrow keys. At least on windows 10 that works, idk about 8 and 7.
