4 parts pigment, 1 part gum arabic, 2 parts water (can be varied). (I'm just making a written note so I'll see it when I return to this video). I got an email from Jacquard this morning, saying they have added a set called, Metallic Calligraphy Set jacquard pearl ex; the only new pigment is Rose Gold, but apparently it is only being sold as part of the set at this point. Thank you for making this video!
arly helm yep, I put together the set, and developed the new rose gold color. working with Jacquard has been wonderful and I am so happy to be representing calligraphers!
arly helm I know it's probs a bit late, but it's 1 teaspoon pigment:1/4 gum arabic : 1 teaspoon water. In other words, 4:1:4 of pigment:gum arabic: water. It's confusing because she starts off using a 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon, then changes to a 1/2 teaspoon to measure the water.

Thank you so much for this excellent video!!!! I was looking for this exact thing years ago and I'm thankful to see you made this. For those of you that were confused about prior comments about the recipe from others (I was for a second) Here is the recipe (so it is handy) the Ratio she speaks of 4:1 is 4 tsp mica/pearl ex to 1 tsp gum arabic then you need to add water to your preference she adds 1 teaspoon but I recommend starting with less. The recipe in total Dry ingredients: mix together 3/4 teaspoon Pearl Ex/ (any mica imo) to 1 teaspoon powdered Gum Arabic. Next add Distilled water maximum 1 teaspoon recommended ( add as much water as you need to get the consistency you like - start with less I recommend 1/2 teaspoon and add a touch until it is what you like.
Thank you soooo much for this tutorial, I brought some inks and it had gum Arabic powder with it. iv heard it can be a pain to mix, clumps up n stuff so I was very nervous to use it and was just about to get the liquid one.But now thanks to you i can save my money and ink away big thumbs up to you for this one (jumps up n down happy bunny)
Boy, did it make me happy finding this video! I couldn't afford the prices of the iridescent calligraphy ink, but I have powdered gum arabic and TONS of Pearl-ex of all colors. Woohoo!
Beautiful Job! I used to buy pearl pigment from a Chinese supplier called Yortay. They make great pigments too, like chameleon pearlescent pigments and 3D effect magnetic pigments.
Would love to see more examples with different colors. Maybe even your own custom color mixes? :) Also are there any other pigment brands you'd recommend for calligraphy? i'm searching amazon and have found quite a few EX Pigment, but I was wondering if other brands matched the quality?
Schmincke makes a medium that when added will make your paint permanent! Curious to see if that would work in this case. From my understanding you would mix the liquid in to the already mixed ink so maybe decrease the amount of water and make up for it with the medium or add it for each project as I'm not sure if it will harden the paint/ink in the jar and cleaning the nib when your done might be a must buy a no brainier. If you try this out let me know how it worked for you! I'm thinking about using it for certain applications but not in the calligraphy sense but I'm still curious to how it will work as an ink. Thanks and take care.
I bought the 32 color Jacquard Pearl Ex Pigment Powder set and there were 2 colors that just would not mix, Bright Yellow and Turquoise. I did it exactly as you showed in the video. All the other colors turned out perfectly so I’m stumped to understand why those 2 colors won’t mix properly. Has anyone else have this problem and if so, were you able to find a way to mix it better?
Can you mix mica powders to be a consistency for acrylic type painting or are they more for liquid processes like ink and watercolor? Can you also dry them to use in watercolor pans?
i had a problem with the ink clumping. no mater what i tried it just wouldnt dissolve properly. I tried adding more water incase it was over saturated but i just ended up with weak watery ink and clumps. any idea what would keep it from dissolving properly?
+Sharmane Coquilla hi! yes, the pigments will settle out of solution so you will need to mix it up again. if it has sit for a few days, the pigments will be pretty compacted at the bottom of your jar, just break it up with a spoon or stirrer or chopstick or whatever. hth!
I am doing an acrylic painting...can I use the 691 Solar Gold powder only without mixing with Arabic. I do not have Arabic. When my painting will be done I will vanish my painting with resin. Is that ok?
LARO Artiste, peintre The GA binds the pigment to the substrate so it won't move. If you put just the pigment on there, it will move when you brush varnish over it since it contains no binder, itself. You can use paint or varnish as a binder, though! GA isn't the only medium those pigments can be mixed into. :-)
Thank you very much for this video. It is a keeper for me. I want to use this as a watercolor paint. I am wondering, I have a bottle of Winsor & Newton Gum Arabic. I have had it a long time and it has never been opened. It has turned a kind of light golden brown. Do you think that it is still usuable or do I need to just toss it. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.
+Joyce B Hi! glad you found this video useful! Liquid gum arabic will darken over time. If your bottle is unopened, I'm thinking it's still good to use. As long as it has not turned cloudy it's probably good to use, hth!
mckim1208 you can store it in a jar for a really long time. you will just need to stir it up really well as the pigments will settle to the bottom. if some of the water has evaporated, just add a bit more to the consistency you like. hth!
Oh, nice! I was hesitant to use my pearl pigments at first 'cause I thought the ink might dry up immediately. Thank you so much for the information! :D
mixed with water, it is not waterproof. mixed with an acrylic base, yes it is. Jacquard also has Lumiere paints, which is an acrylic base fabric paint that uses Pearl Ex for shimmer. You can add water to dilute the Lumiere. hth!
Hi Joi, I've been attempting this method with Mica Powder (which is just as highly pigmented) and I've been using your same technique however instead of the gum arabic being powder, I was using the liquid form, and yet the ink does flow nicely and keeps 'blobbing' up (sorry didn't know how else to explain it) - any suggestions as to why this might be the case?
+Jamila Miah honestly, I cannot speak to another brand/type of mica powder if i do not have experience with it and/or the particular color you tried. i have no idea how that mica powder/color is made. there are so many variables, including your nib, that it could be anything. i'm sorry i know that is of no help to you!
it depends on what type of water you are using (tap vs. distilled), and how often you use the ink. if left long enough in a non-air tight container, anything will spoil. I usually mix up no more than a jumbo dinky dip worth of ink (unless i'm mixing for a very large job) to ensure that I use most of it up before there is any chance of spoiling. hth!
+LindieLee since this is a waterbased, adding watercolor over it would not be a good idea. i would suggest using an acrylic based ink if you need to put watercolor over it. hth!
World Football Highlights sorry I have no idea where you can get that in India. Probably from art suppliers like we get it in art stores here in North America
I don't know what the problem is but I simply can't get it to work. I tried a dozen different kind of nibs of different brands and nothing comes out. I even tried thinning/thickening it. I just submitted to the fact that I have to use a paint brush😢
Goulet pens in usa sell shimmer inks. I have one currently in a daily use demonstrator fountain pen, as long as you gently tip from side to side or roll the pen to mix the pigments but not so to create bubbles, you are fine to go! Loads of colours available and even sample sets available!
it depends on what colors you are mixing, a few colors, the Chromatic Colors line, do not blend with water well as they are coated with an additive. Full list of the Chromatic colors is on my website.
Hi Steezy - I have not used it for that purpose so cannot speak to its efficacy, I would check with the manufacturer of your printer for use of non standard inks.

Haha your little "thanks guys love ya bye" was adorable!
Nice set of instructions, others make it a bit of confusing, yours is excellent, thank you
Boy, did it make me happy finding this video! I couldn't afford the prices of the iridescent calligraphy ink, but I have powdered gum arabic and TONS of Pearl-ex of all colors. Woohoo!
using pearl ex is SO cost effective, you can make so much ink from one bottle of pigment. glad this was of help to you!
Thanks for the great instructions! It turned out so beautiful and your calligraphy is to die for omg.
Beautiful Job! I used to buy pearl pigment from a Chinese supplier called Yortay. They make great pigments too, like chameleon pearlescent pigments and 3D effect magnetic pigments.
thanks, very helpful.
I love you!
Beautiful work, beautiful hands just beautiful everything
edward curran thank you ed!!! miss you, hope you are well!
that was very thorough and love your style!

Fantastic! Does it adhere to wood? Could I put some varnish on top? thank you.

Love This!!! Thank you so much for sharing... ;)
So would this gold ink work when put in a ballpoint pen? Or how could it not clog?
What about adding fine milled glitter to the ink, as well, would that work?
How much pearlex would you suggest in 20ml ink bottle?
does it need to be refrigerated when not in use?
Hi! I was wondering, if for example you don't use the ink for some time, do the parts settle and separate? Do you need to mix it again?
+Sharmane Coquilla hi! yes, the pigments will settle out of solution so you will need to mix it up again. if it has sit for a few days, the pigments will be pretty compacted at the bottom of your jar, just break it up with a spoon or stirrer or chopstick or whatever. hth!
Nicely done...thank you.
Beautiful!
Can you use any pigment or only the pearl ex?
I am doing an acrylic painting...can I use the 691 Solar Gold powder only without mixing with Arabic. I do not have Arabic. When my painting will be done I will vanish my painting with resin. Is that ok?

How long would it last once mixed if stored in an airtight jar?
beautiful!!
Joi, would it be possible to use this ink with a normal fountain pen nib?
Thank you very much for this video. It is a keeper for me. I want to use this as a watercolor paint. I am wondering, I have a bottle of Winsor & Newton Gum Arabic. How does the interference powder work? Just a lighter form of color I assume.
hi
how can I print a word or photo have many colours ?when you look on it can't see that's colours just when see it defrent corners or defrent sids
Thanks for the tutorial! :) How long can we store the extra unused ink? Or does it immediately dry up?
mckim1208 you can store it in a jar for a really long time. you will just need to stir it up really well as the pigments will settle to the bottom. if some of the water has evaporated, just add a bit more to the consistency you like. hth!

Hi joi
Quick question: Does the gold color wears off over time and also if it is waterproof? I wanted to try it for miniature designs.

Where can I get gum arabic ??
Hi Joi! thanks for the tutorial! I have the liquid gum Arabic. what proportion do I use for liquid gum arabic? thanks!
+Kristen Khan it's the same whether it's powder or liquid, 4:1.

Is the pearl ex black really flat and dark?
How long does it stay usable in the container? Does it spoil or last forever? :)
it depends on what type of water you are using (tap vs. distilled), and how often you use the ink. if left long enough in a non-air tight container, anything will spoil. i can't seem to get ink to flow on my upstrokes. what did i miss?
+Adz Perez hi! i don't know what nib you are using, but try adding a bit more water, your mixture might be too thick for your nib. hth!
I only found liquid gum Arabic in my art stores here....please tell me the ratio to mix that with pearlex powder pigment
Hi Harsh - the ratio is the same if you use liquid or powder gum arabic, 4 parts pigment to 1 part gum arabic.
Mrs Harsh Ghai where can we buy liquid gum Arabic in India
World Football Highlights sorry I have no idea where you can get that in India. Probably from art suppliers like we get it in art stores here in North America
Joi Hunt Thank you❤️

it depends on what colors you are mixing, a few colors, the Chromatic Colors line, do not blend with water well as they are coated with an additive. Full list of the Chromatic colors is on my website.
"Thumbs UP"
Can you use this for printers that take pigment ink?
Hi Steezy - I have not used it for that purpose so cannot speak to its efficacy, I would check with the manufacturer of your printer for use of non standard inks.
Will this recipe work even if my pigment is not Pearl Ex?
I can only speak to pearl ex as i have not used other pigment powders. follow the instructions from any other product, hth!
would it work without the gum Arabic?
+Czarina Astor no, without the gum arabic as a binder it will not adhere to any surface.
+Joi Hunt thanks joi!
what ia this arabic gum ..??
where do u buy those?
Need to find that storage container.
Got it. John Neal Bookseller. Jumbo Dinky Dip Refills. Right now it's 8 for $5.95. :)
excellent!
What's your email?🥺
