Personally, I would have removed the original graphics, wrapped the canoe and then applied the new graphics* for a cleaner look or used the cut tape and followed the outline of the name graphics to give it a more custom, finished look. *You can order replacement graphics for your canoe online.
I recently had new Old Town and Charles River graphics printed for my canoe in a color shade to match yet slightly contrast to the wrap I ordered for my canoe.

How rugged is the wrap? I wonder if this could be used to recondition older royalex boats that have a rough outer vinyl layer?

It's not that rugged from an impact perspective. It's vinyl. Best suited to flatware or deeper rivers where impacts with rocks will be limited.

There are different grades of vinyl that is used for wraps. Some more abrasion resistant than others. And with proper prep you could wrap your Royalex canoe to give it a new look.
