What a gem. I just dug out my old vinyl copy of her album, Restless Nights (pictured in the video) to play it again. Karla Bonoff was one of those great unsung songwriters. She wrote the masterpiece "Lose Again", recorded by Linda Ronstadt.
we learned this song in my elementary music class 17 years ago. this is when i fell in love with music and songwriting. so grateful for my music teacher at the time, mrs. reeder... wherever you may be, thank you for blessing us kids with the gift of music ❤
This song overwhelms me with beauty, sweetness and tenderness. And above all, Karla's voice and James' amazing harmony, followed by JD with them hitting that dissonant "Faithless Love" note (a C#). Oh my so gorgeous. I love that E string tuned down to a D. So rich. And it has that exceptionally sweet and simple Scottish melody, like so many other English and Irish folk melodies.
I came here because my mother and me used to sing this as a kid every night before bed together always thought she came up with it. Really truly my best memories with her ❤️
i've heard probably 20 different versions of this song, as it's one of my favorites for it's simplicity and poignant lyrics. one of my favorite artists of all time, eva cassidy does it very well. and yet... this is easily the best version i've ever heard. i'd never heard of karla bonoff before finding this arrangement. certainly james taylor's part adds to it, but karla seems to connect the tune to the depth of the lyrics better than anyone else i've heard. i'm quite glad i found it.
Such a minimalist folk song, such simplistic lyrics, almost nothing to it, hard to believe that it's even survived. But so dreamy, such rich chord changes, somehow it has a grip on us.
This is by far the best version of this song. I have listened to Charlotte Church and to Enya and no one does it as great as Karla Bonoff. Just beautiful!!
You need to hear Eva Cassidy's version, for everything she sang became hers. For example. Sting wrote and recorded Fields of Gold, but when he heard Eva Cassidy sing Fields of Gold, all he could say was, 'this is HER song'
James Taylor's harmony adds exquisite beauty to an already beautiful lead vocal by Karla Bonoff, sung to simple but haunting guitar accompaniment. What a lovely, lovely rendition of a sweet, melancholy old ballad.
I saw Karla last night. 🤣I was so stoked!! My first time. I’ve always been too poor to go but I just said the heck with my debt and I went. She was great. She had Nina Gerger as her accompaniment. They were both great. Her voice still sounds terrific. She deserves to be more recognized for all her accomplished music. This song her version, should have been used in the movie “The River Wild”. And she autographed my CD I bought of hers. She sang for two hours along with Nina performing too. Just grand!!!

Today is my 18th birthday, I have one specific memory of my mother singing this song to me. For the longest time i had just completely forgotten it, but a few years ago the memory came back, and I was searching for the song I could vaguely remember the tune of and the only lyric I could think of was "love is gentle and love is kind." hearing it again for the first time made me cry. Its a beautiful song and it will always remind me off how much I love my mom. Im going to ask her about the first time she heard it later today because in the last 4 years of remembering it i havent thought to ask.
I've heard most of the great folk and even classical sopranos do this and a few good male vocalists too. None of them come anywhere near the pathos that Karla brings to this beautiful song. It's quite an achievement to put down the definitive version of such a much-recorded tune.
Pete Seeger is the accordion player on this track. Plus James Taylor on guitar and background vocals. All of these incredible people, all being very humble and keeping it simple, quiet, clear, touching, making room for the heartfelt vocal by Karla B. Nearly 3 million views says they did something special. This is in my top 5 all-time single tracks. Heard Karla play it live a few years ago in Des Moines, and she still completely embodies this beautiful song.

I continue to search for singer-songwriters that deliver what Karla has done since ?? 1975 ?? But I can plug in her albums and take week-long drives and this song begs me to pull over and think of the work to create such a majestic experience. Thanks, Kenny, JD and James, and I'm glad folks are also commenting on Garth's most beautiful accordian work.
Thanks so much for posting this. In this era of over-the-top, American Idol style singing, it's refreshing to hear a vocal that is genuine and free of affectation. I had the pleasure of seeing Karla Bonoff live when she was touring as an opening act in support of her first album in the late '70s. She's long been a favorite of mine and this particular rendition of this old traditional folk song has always made me misty eyed.
So right! You hit on exactly the reason I love this woman so. Just pure, simple, beautiful singing with no tricks or unnecessary embellishment. This song and her voice doesn’t need it.
Mr Garth Hudson doing what only he can do with an improvisational accordion solo! As Robbie Robertson said of Hudson... If i want something in music no other person in the world can give me ... I go to Garth ! One of these days the true extent of Garth Hudson's gifts will be told to the whole planet . I suspect they will run out of superlatives ! The most sublimely brilliant musician of the rock era .

Karla wrote and sings some of my favorite songs. Her version of the Water is Wide is magical and touches us deep in our souls. I became a Karla fan when I noticed the songwriter of Someone To Lay Down Beside Me had her own great version on her own album in the late 1970s. Since then I’ve gotten and enjoyed all her albums including the 2 she did with Bryndle 15-20 years ago. I’ve somehow never seen her live but will fix that this December. It’s her holiday show, her only appearance semi-near this year. I hope she also plays some of her big songs …and of course, this one.
This song's been done by many over the years but, NOBODY does it better than Karla Bonoff. Everything she does is MAGIC. Too many years she was overlooked being the songwriter of hits for Linda Rondstadt (among others) to make popular and take accolades for. It is way past time for everyone to get turned on to Karla. I had the pleasure of seeing her. If you have the chance GO!!! I have everything she has done over her career. Everything she does is amazing!! THANKS FOR THE POSTING! Loved it!
This is a beautiful song, but if you come here after watching Pure Love, maybe you cry. I dont know why, but i've listened to this song everyday since i watched the movie, and still, i cried :)
세실 샵[Cecil sharp]이 1906년 발간한 민속 음악 모음집 [Folk songs from Somerset]에는 [Child ballad 204, Jamie Douglas]로 되어 있죠. The water is wide Karla Bonoff *The water is wide I can't cross over And neither have the wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall row, my love and I Oh, love is gentle and love is kind The sweetest flower when first it's new But love grows old and waxes cold 사랑도 나이가 들고 차갑게 식어버리다가 and fades away like morning dew 아침 이슬처럼 사라져 버리네요 There is a ship and she sails to sea She's loaded deep as deep can be 짐을 가득 실었지만 But not as deep as the love I'm in I know not how I sink or swim

I revisit his song by Karla every year. It still gives me hope and reminds me that love is an endless way to a happy life. And I'm very happy that people that have responded here let it touch their hearts. Only her voice can carry that melody right through my soul.
The most beautiful song about being abandoned by a lover. Yet the need and the still living hope for a boat for two, working together. When you stand by a rural lake in Ireland in the late night summer in the dusk slowly falling into sunset and hear the pipes across the water, this is the song.
Beautiful version. James on guitar and J.D Souther and James on harmony. .Hard song to beat.. We love doing this one for our own joy. Could pick out James guitar anywhere :) but the harmonies were what made this song.. underrated .. thanks to all 3 performers.. JL
To my hubby, I dedicate This song for you. U are my water, u are my boat u are my sea and u are my sky. I love you to the moon and back. Til the day we get gray. ❤ U are my everything.
I just heard Carrickfergus on Boardwalk Empire, and it reminded me of this song. Restless Nights was a special discovery for me in my freshman year of college and it quicky became a favorite. I'd forgotten how good it is. Thanks for posting.

Some music is timeless and knows no boundaries. I'm listening because I was talking to friends on FB about the song so came to listen. Lovely isn't it?
After recording this song with her, James Taylor did his own version years later (also on you tube) and he puts his own magic into it. Wonderful song and even more talented people singing it. BTW, the harmony at the end that makes your knees weak is courtesy of J D Souther.
This song was the first song I learned in choir, in the 7th grade. At 12 yrs old, not having understood the words, only playfully sang. I'm 36yo now, and having two loves walk out of my life, but still immensely caring for them, brings me to tears when I now have heard this for the first time in 24yrs. But I can plug in her albums and take week-long drives and this song begs me to pull over and think of the work to create such a majestic experience. Thanks, Kenny, JD and James, and I'm glad folks are also commenting on Garth's most beautiful accordian work.
I've never heard of her and I don't know why, I really look forward to finding more music by her, this version of the water is wide is terrific!
2019??
This song still make me cry :")

No it's song...
This is great. Not only does James sound great singing, but his guitar playing on this is unbelievable. Great complement to Karla's own sounds.
There never was better steel guitar picking.
this is the best version i have ever heard of this song.
theID2 I prefer the version by Gerard Way
Very nice version. But the best, in my opinion, is by Fred Neil. Haunting
Most of her songs make me cry..... she really feels them
James Taylor version is brilliant
yes, always has been.
Garth Hudson's accordion is absolutely gorgeous!..
When I was a little girl my cat Buffy crossed over the Sanibel River. I was looking for her everywhere I went outside and there she was on the other side of the River Just staring at me. I looked everywhere..I couldn't figure out how to cross over ..then I found a small piece of wood. I went over and got her. I know she's safe with my Mom in heaven and Adam. .Thank you Father for your blessings.
One of the most beautiful pieces ever written

I have never heard of this woman until this post. Amazing. Beautiful singer, composer and woman. She sings this one as good as it can be sung. Had I known about her years ago I would have followed her singing to this day.
Karla Bonoff-great songwriter, beautiful voice, this is one of my favorites, hope to row in that boat with my love!!! Today life is good! Thank you, Karla, for writing such a wonderful song! mphsgrneyes...Robin
Loved it!
Hey are you there 😢 ?
This is a beautiful song, but if you come here after watching Pure Love, maybe you cry. I dont know why, but i've listened to this song everyday since i watched the movie, and still, i cried :)

Risma DeoQmanna film korea.. sad ending. aku nyari lagu ini pun setelah nonton film unforgettable
Yes, me too. :))
We don't need to know why, because it's our felling.
Beautiful. the harmony gives me chills.
세실 샵[Cecil sharp]이 1906년 발간한 민속 음악 모음집 [Folk songs from Somerset]에는 [Child ballad 204, Jamie Douglas]로 되어 있죠.
The water is wide
Karla Bonoff
*The water is wide I can't cross over
And neither have the wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I
Oh, love is gentle and love is kind
The sweetest flower when first it's new
But love grows old and waxes cold
and fades away like morning dew
There is a ship and she sails to sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim

Breathtakingly beautiful and elegant. How can you compare this with today's so-called music? Ethereal and eternal.
Wow this is a wonderful version off this great song this version is new to me and so is this singer a great voice just great .
David Doyle, you'd LOVE her greatest hits. She wrote some songs made popular by other artists, and you will recognize them.
I will look out for them Susan thank you very much .
Thank you for that i will look out for it if not find i will order it .thank you again
Hard to go wrong with Karla's sweet voice, James Taylor on harmony and Garth Hudson (from the Band) on accordion playing a timeless tune..
Thanks so much!
I've been searching for years for a really great version of this song - finally found it - the best ever!
There's just nothing like singer/songwriters. The emotional and feeling are there. Karla rules that realm!!!!!
I didn't need a movie to love Karla's version of this song, it's a traditional song and I bought the lp when it came out , this version ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS EVER !!!!!
The movie unforgettable brought me here, and now i can't stop crying😭😭😭😭
Same
Guys same here 😭
And I'm not aware that the movie needs a lot of tissue, I watched the movie in the public place 😭. So embarrassing I cried 😭
I hadn't this on on vinyl when it first came out there's not a bad song on this entire album. This woman is so underrated.her musical talent in songwriting vocals lyrics and as a musician are off the charts
Absolutely breathtaking.
I revisit his song by Karla every year. It still gives me hope and reminds me that love is an endless way to a happy life. And I'm very happy that people that have responded here let it touch their hearts. Only her voice can carry that melody right through my soul.
Human carnal love is nothing compared to the amazing love of God almighty.

The most beautiful song about being abandoned by a lover. Yet the need and the still living hope for a boat for two, working together. When you stand by a rural lake in Ireland in the late night summer in the dusk slowly falling into sunset and hear the pipes across the water, this is the song.
I love her voice
Beautiful version. James on guitar and J.D Souther and James on harmony. .Hard song to beat.. We love doing this one for our own joy. Could pick out James guitar anywhere :) but the harmonies were what made this song.. underrated .. thanks to all 3 performers.. JL
To my hubby, I dedicate This song for you. U are my water, u are my boat u are my sea and u are my sky. I love you to the moon and back. Til the day we get gray. ❤
U are my everything.
I just heard Carrickfergus on Boardwalk Empire, and it reminded me of this song. Restless Nights was a special discovery for me in my freshman year of college and it quicky became a favorite. I'd forgotten how good it is. Thanks for posting.
I love all the songs in this album.
I haven't listened to Karla in a long time--beautiful melancholy tune. Thanks Penny for sending it to me!
This is as good as it gets. Best version.
OMG this is the aweetest song I've ever heard! Love Karla Bonoff❤
Sorry guys that was a typo! # sweetest!❤
What a lovely song
Beautiful !
Karla Bonoff has The Best version of this song. Interesting reading comments....this old Scottish Folk tune is in a Korean movie and touches the hearts of all who hear it. Some music is timeless and knows no boundaries. I'm listening because I was talking to friends on FB about the song so came to listen. Lovely isn't it?
Every song on this CD is equally as beautiful. Although she didn’t write this song she has written many beautiful ones. She’s even better in person.
Beautiful song and wonderfully sung; and thank you Karen Nathman, for introducing this song to me.
Listening to this beautiful song really brought tears to my eyes.
I'm so glad you like her song!!
I like her songs for about 30 years((it reveal my age^^;)!!
