  • We explore a bit of Moab over July 4th in the RAM 3500 Four Wheel Camper Hawk build. Pushed the limits a bit further as we get comfortable with the truck and ended up damaging it in the process. Otherwise, it was a great trip and great scenery! #overlanding #camping #travel #ramhd #ramtruck #fourwheelcamper #moabang

    Great truck, great setup, lots of money invested, great partners together, don't get discouraged, you're just "working the bugs out" of the other video and learning about the truck on this type of trail. The truck can handle much more and will be just fine. Hang in there; you'll be fine. Subscribed and enjoying, so y'all are doing great!

    Thanks for being so transparent in your camping travels. It's so nice seeing you guys put it all out there. And you two work well together. Bummer about the awning. We'll be putting one on our rig in the future, but I've seen me drive lol!! Not that my driving is bad, but we take our rig on some questionable lines. That being said we're going to try a $100 unit from Napa auto parts (same dimensions as ARB 2500) then get the ARB room setup $250ish. So we won't cry too bad if we tear it up. If you guys get to Reno there's a guy here, KP Pawley, that does awesome FWC, fabrication and overland work in general. He's helped us with our rig and freebie flex tested it in their shop. Good times lol!!! Enjoy the day.

      Thank you. We started sharing this as a way to document “family movies” that our kids can look back on years from now to remember mom and dad and maybe even their kids kids. But we also take a lot from the RUclips community that we enjoy and are glad to give back in some small way for a win win. I did actually talk to KP just recently. Seems like a good guy and resource that isn’t super far away.

    4:30 That's Long Canyon for those that aren't familiar with it. That's the only "obstacle" on the trail really. The rest is just a smooth shelf road. For reference I had a 5th gen 4R on 33" with a 2.5" lift and made it over that spot going the same direction without any issue with just a rear locker. No spotter needed, no tire slip, one try, easy peasy. It sure seemed like a RAM with both front & rear lockers on 37's struggled up that more than I thought it would. Big tires, big lifts, and double locked doesn't always mean you'll conquer everything. I think weight and COG played a big role here as to why the RAM struggled over a relatively small and easy obstacle given the lift and tire size. I have a feeling the old GX would have scooted over that section just as easily as my 4R.

      Yeah. It’s funny how the in the seat experience can feel much different from reality. It felt way more tippy and close to the rock from the seat vs the video when I saw it later. And totally agree the weight of this thing changes the dynamics. It’s by far the largest thing I’ve ever taken in the dirt and I need a lot more time behind the wheel to get a better feel for it. On the lockers I didn’t turn them one the first try and once I did it climbed right out. And I used both right out of the gate so I’m not sure if just the rear would have done the trick on its own. As soon as nitro releases gears for it I plan to put gears in it which should help with the crawl ratio a bit and I’m hoping give me more ability to idle up stuff like this vs having to try to use the skinny peddle as much. And agree on the GX. It was an amazing rig. Wish I could have kept it but it just didn’t make any sense for me to given the other rigs we have as well and the amount of time it would be sitting.

    Ha!! Ok as you likely already know…. That Fiama awning is a beast! My 300 foot 6 roll incident ejected the Fiama the first or second roll! It’s currently living the rest of its loooooong life on a sprinter van! It survived the ejection from the camper…. Which shortly ejected from the truck on the 5th or 6th roll😜😂😂

  • @adventurebound3529

    Love the setup! FWC is about a year out on repairs right now. Might be best to try and fix it yourself. If it was me I would have some oversize aluminum backing plates fabed up to "sandwich" on top of the old mounting loctions. The latch is a easy fix diy...ask me how I know ;) That first carnage is always tough.
    I also notice you have a ton of sway in the back. Do you have a rear sway bar? Most of us use the Helwig Big Wig sway bar on this platform.

    • @overlandv10
      @overlandv10  3 года назад

      Thank you! Yeah I heard on the repairs. Oddly enough we had already had discussion with FWC about a small warranty issue with our fridge and arranged with them to have them fix that. Then this happened. So my plan is to let them take a look at the damage when they fix the small fridge issue (not their fault but isotherm’s) and then decide. They already sent me a new latch that I replaced and I pulled the brackets for the awning off. The aluminum is a bit torn up under them but the frame doesn’t appear to have bent which would have been the big concern. That is a good idea about the backing plates. My main concern is I want to be sure we don’t have any leaks. There is one questionable spot on the roof that I can’t quite tell if it went through or not but if not I think we are pretty good to go after we get the new brackets on. Yes on the sway and agreed. I was also aired down which adds to the sway but there is still more than I want. We have some suspension bits including sway bar on order but you know the lead times on stuff these days so we are still waiting on it. I appreciate all the info and ideas! Thank you again!

    I had a ARB dual compressor on my F250. I run 37s as well. I ended fitting an Outback Extreme compressor, running off the aux belt in the engine bay. I’m pretty sure an engine mounted compressor would be available for your truck as they fit them to many service trucks. Also check out MORRflate. This set up let’s you inflate all 4 tires at once. Money well spent! With this set I can air up in a 1/4 of the time.

    Bummer about the awning, but what an awesome trail and campsite. If it makes you feel any better, you’ve done some of us a great service by raising awareness of the awning overhang on a tight trail. Curious if you could have lashed the awning to the roof, or to the side of the flatbed?

    • @overlandv10
      @overlandv10  3 года назад +1

      It was one of the better sites we’ve had for sure. In cooler weather it would have been a great place to hang for a few days. And yes always glad to give back to the community where we can if it saves someone grief down the road 😬. I thought about the roof as a possibility but we had so many vehicles stacking up that couldn’t pass we rushed to figure something out. But going forward I do want to have a better plan it if ever happens again for sure!

  • @davidcoy8348

    Sorry about the awning. I think the size and weight of these rigs extends the learning curve substantially. We recently had an experience with our awning near Moab in our Crew Cab 3500 with the same setup as yours. My nervous and inexperienced spotter/wife was more concerned about the proximity to the drop off to the Green River on the White Rim Trail rather than the awnings interface with the rocks on the opposite side. Awning scratched but not lost though. We also have found that lockers, at least for the rear, are on the acquisition list as the LSD has not been up to the task. You obviously have those. Also the AEV suspension has been inadequate for my 12,000 # rig (I had a broken rear window of the Hawk to prove it). Enjoy.

    • @overlandv10
      @overlandv10  3 года назад +1

      Agreed. I’m finding a big difference in the dynamics of our other rigs and this one with it weighing so much more. Yes on the suspension/sway set up. We actually have another suspension set up on order but with the lead times on it we will be waiting a while until it shows up. That upgrade and gears when they become available are on the list. Sorry you scratched up your awning too. I didn’t know it when we made this video but we actually bent ours and I’m having to replace it all the way around. But I should have the truck back together and on the trails in another week or so.

      Yeah we sold shortly before we moved out of VA. It was a great truck but it was hardly being driven as it was and with the RAM build it would have been driven even less. Plus it was nice to recover some funds from it to put into to the RAM build.

  • @kiplambel4052

    That'll buff right out. Seriously though, they'll plug old rivet/screw holes and put a new bracket next to the old one, IF they need to.

    • @overlandv10
      @overlandv10  3 года назад +1

      Ty. Yeah I’m hoping it isn’t too involved. Once we got the camper home and took the brackets off there is a bit more visible damage that ripped some of the siding under the brackets as well as damaged the top a bit where they dug into it when they bent. From the inside one of the brackets is slightly lifted but I don’t think we bent the frame which is really good. Also did a little interior cosmetic damage from the awning in the camper but that can be fixed too I’m sure.

    What a gorgeous area. As for the awning I would suggest a simpler solution - This vehicle, to say is tremendously nice would be understating things. I don't know how to make this suggestion - Do you spend more time under the awning or from going from point A to B? The awning is nice, there is no question about that but would a quick tarp set up serve the same purpose as well? A simple solution could be designed and implemented. In WW2 the German Tanks were top notch, they had protection and firepower what they lacked was mobility. I would never suggest do without and I don't want to be misunderstood, I am saying there has to be a better solution for off road vehicles other than a delicate awning which makes a tough vehicle wider -

    • @overlandv10
      @overlandv10  3 года назад

      Thanks foe the thoughts Dale. Yeah I’m sure we could make something like that work and I actually have something similar to that for the Taco and the Jeep, but the set up time with the awning we have on the camper is super fast. We do use it almost every time we camp and being able to put it out in 15 seconds is really nice. But I do need to learn where our corners are going forward 😂
