YES! Been waiting for this video for ages! I grew up in Hangzhou near West lake and I'm so proud of this tea and the history that it brings! Awesome video Don!
This video is a testament to the unique expertise of this creator. Longjing is such a delectable tea. It's my favorite, actually. There are so many tea channels and non-tea channels' dedicated videos on tea, and, yet, only Mei Leaf has done longjing justice. Bravo.
West Lake Longjing is picked from the end of March to the beginning of April every year. However, the most valuable Longjing picked before the Qingming Festival is called "Mingqian Longjing", which is the best of all Longjing teas. I recommend 77cha
Always informative and well made videos, thanks. Regarding Dragon Well tea... if you visit the actual dragon well near West Lake and stir the surface of the water with the stick provided you will see that, if there has been rain recently, the rain water which is less dense than the relatively thick well water, creates a dragon-face-like pattern on the surface. I've stirred it and seen it. That's where the name comes from. I still have a pair of hand beaten iron scissors given to me by one of the lady tea-pickers there. PS: enjoyed your Keemun video also but you didn't mention the unique flavour of cocoa that the best quality has... which always gives me a pleasant surprise. Keep at it!
I loved this stuff when I was in highschool, I just got the cheap stuff from online but my sister came back from a business/pleasure trip to China just before the pandemic and brought me 200g of Ming Qian Qun Ti Zhong (I probably butchered that). Supposedly it was second harvest, she wouldn't tell me how much it ran her but she's loaded loaded so I'm not surprised to hear it's as expensive as it is. Holy shit dude, what a difference from the cheap stuff I drank in highschool. I'm by no means a tea snob, one of my favs is tazo zen haha, but premium long jing is truly an experience words can't describe. I've had the stuff in an airlock container and it literally tastes as fresh now as I write this as it did when I had it fresh from her. If you're on the fence about shelling out 200 bucks for roughly 30 cups of tea, I get it, but first it can be resteeped up to 5 times (I find 3 the max before the quality diminishes) but still, you get more bang for your buck than you think. Second, think of it as an experience you're buying rather than a consumable. It really is something special and my "palate" for tea is terrible because aside from this stuff I'm not an avid tea drinker, so if this swayed you to give it a shot, let me know how you liked it! I'd be thrilled to hear about your first impressions.
Great video Don. Long Jing is one of my favorite teas. It's my comfort tea. Every time I feel like having tea but I'm not sure what to drink, I usually end up with drinking Long Jing. I can't wait to try your flight box (I've ordered it a few minutes ago).
wow i am a big fan of you guys.. always thank you so much for producing awesome contents about tea.. they helps me a lot. this video is super beautiful.. it is like an art work..
Just today, I had a Long Jing that tasted of pesto genovese for the first three infusions. Then, it transitioned into strawberry, but not a real strawberry, instead the artificial flavour kind. After a couple more infusions, it developed a nutty aroma. Any ideas what the cultivar of this tea could have been? All I know is that it was Long Jing, from Anhui, and that I brewed 6 grams at 80°C, with 150ml of water.
Don, you are the tea Bodhisattva and bring more and more joy to the tea meditation experience. You answer so many questions. Wisdom and knowing help make decisions that yield good fruits and less suffering. I just watched a documentary about conditions for workers on Darjeeling tea plantations in another country and was appalled at the unhappy, exploitative, unhealthy and dangerous conditions and the exposure to pesticides without proper safeguards that also made it into some expensive popular teas going to EU. Knowing you and watching your videos of vested tea farmers who make a good living and taking joy in their daily work makes us feel one with the people who make our tea, and it makes one feel happy to see people working in such a right livelihood in an historically Buddhist area that also embraces a love and respect of the farmers and workers who you show mindfully creating a gift of nature with their hard and satisfying work. The Long Jing is so sweet and all the sweeter with the knowledge of those who love making it. Thank you to you and all of those who make and bring our tea zen.
Hi!! Love your channel ❤️ Would there be any chance you could someday tackle the whole "matcha from Japan is good, matcha made in China is bad/cut with lower quality" ordeal? I'm curious as to why so many people say that on sites when I'm searching for good matcha 😄
Hey Don, next time you're in China (or passing through Shanghai) look me up. I'm really enjoying your videos, and I'm trying to develop a wechat tea head group where I live. It'd be great to connect with you.
How much would a hundred Kg of good tea bring a small grower that he got on the government alloted plot. Maybe after 10 years or later. I understand small growers may not get as good a price as an established larger one may negotiate for.
You have gotten really good at trimming the fat off of videos. Lots of info presented in an accessible way that isn't overwhelming. This is a textbook example of a good educational video that is also entertaining/pleasant.
Could you do a video on how to brew different types of tea in a way that they can last all day in a thermos? I am having trouble with green and raw pu-erh teas becoming very bitter and astringent after a few hours with sediment. I brew my tea at 80c, only steep for 10s and double filter it through two coffee filters. Oolong and ripe pu-erh teas seem to have no issue for even 12 hours sometimes.
Haha That is typical Chinese Grandma brewing style! Hahahah . They've drinked too much tea in their life, so they are tired of measurements, they just like to follow with their heart. But for new beginners I would not recommend brewing like this
Ive just ordered this tea, im buying this in Dec and is listed as spring, is there a rough rule of thumb for when spring tea shouldn't be purchased? because it is old or probably not spring?
Hello Don I am a tea head as well. I just finished reviewing your green tea matcha video. How do i purchase on your website with my US dollars via debit. I was looking for a US link and could not find one. Can you let me know please; thank you!!! YSD
Hey and thanks for writing. If you click the flag in the top left hand corner of the website you can change to US and all prices will be in dollars. Shipping costs are calculated automatically at check checkout and usually takes a few days to 10 days depending on shipping option you choose.
Moreover, if you use too much teaware, people of there will even think you are not an authentic longjing enthusiast ... I don't know why, but it is the style of people in Zhejiang brewing their tea.
I have found some green teas being sold as "Lung Ching"... is this just a common denomination to lower grade variety of the Long Jing or an indicative of a completely fake tea?!
Color me amazed. People in China are polite by saying ninja with silent j to each other. That is so nice, and so weird! Well, I guess it goes well with the nutty flavour of Long Jing Silver, which is the same tea that pirates of the olde world desired to steal more than anything else. Forget about chests abundant with golden treasures. No, no, no, they much more preferred something yarrlicious.
well, the long jing on your site is lower than the price you said and claim to be from this region. so did the price change? did you buy from another region this year?
You should add some background music to the instructionals. I didn't realize I was watching/listening to this video while I had my instrumental beats playing. It is a bit more pleasant, as I didn't realize this video didn't have any music to it.
Seeing those original cultivar plants get destroyed for a tea made by pretty soulless means almost makes me not want to buy any long Jing from cultivars like 43....
just FYI, I'm 6'2, 195lbs, 10% body fat Broad shoulders, very defined, powerful back (deadlift PR of 505 lbs), chest hair, full thick beard veiny forearms a protruding and defined jawline, and the majority of my wardrobe is made up of dress shirts
I habe been a fan of Don for a while. I have learned a lot. But he did mention that the summer crop HAS to be sprayed eith insecticides. If he thinks that is fine then I will need to stop my sub for these videos. Sorry but we should not be supporting this.

The hills of Zhejiang are so beautiful.
Fellow musician here. Love the track at the beginning. Me and my 4 year old had a good dance to it.
Always love these kinds of videos. Enriches the experience of drinking the tea.
Thank you for this video! Long Jing is one of my favorite teas and one of the first true tea I have tasted. It truly changed my life from teabags.
Well i didint liked this tea that much. But probably because im not a fan of green tea and all that grass taste.
@@t0lex14 I think Long Jing is a mixed bag. I don't like it but my brother swear by it.

The care put into this documentary is outstanding!
It's been awhile since you made videos like this.
Longjing Tea is my favourite tea that I drink every day, but I don't know how Longjing Tea is made. Thank you for this amazing video~
God this well done. I already loved long jing, but man did this get me excited about it.

Just made myself a Mei Leaf Dragonwell tea...and watching this video!
Very informational video, thanks for sharing your knowledge on Long Jing tea.
This was so informational! I have lived in Hangzhou for 10 years and never learned so much about LongJing tea before hahah
Those feilds are gorgeous!!
Long Jim was my first green tea experience 🤫
YAAAAAS!! LOVE these type of videos 🥰 Not even a minute in, liked it, commented and LOVE IT!
1:55 haha Them pickers love em fresh city slickers!
Thanks for the vid. I'm thinking of Long Jing to alternate with Japanese greens.
I love the women looking up at the camera like at 14:56
wow watching all your videos learning a lot about tea's, i want to taste high quality tea to compare to my everyday cup
This format is really good. Watched the whole video in one sitting. Great work, Don and Celine.
This place is beautiful! Just getting into tea and so excited to see this culture
Would love to see this type of video for other tea varieties. Fantastic info!
Don, I'm new to Long Jing. Thanks for sharing us your knowledge. I will be an informed buyer
I really enjoy these trip videos! Love the chance to see where and how the teas are grown/made and learn about the teas.
I watch your interesting video and drink Long Jing tea. Thank you.
Good accurate description
Excellent info, thanks guys
One of my favorite teas, and now, one of my favorite videos. Must have been an amazing experience. Thanks for making!
Nice video
Did you make the intro music yourself? It sounds amazing. And awesome video can't wait to watch it 4 times.
Yes I wrote that track about 15 years ago and includes my voice 😂
@@MeiLeaf Is it available to download somewhere?
No it is in my old productions folder and was never released actually.
@@MeiLeaf well I am looking forward to hearing more of your songs in your videos

how was i done before invention of such machines? were they using analogous machines but not based on electricity?
No it was all hand baked from beginning to end before machines.
I don't even drink tea but I watched the whole video.
so they let the leafs in the tea? because they are not processed yet and you can do that without the tea getting bitter or what is going on?

Can I bulk up on Tea - meaning, buy a lot of tea at once. Also, I am planning to go to China, what shops are well worth for the money?
Mag Jison if you happen to be in the Shanghai area the Tianshan tea city is worth checking out.
jolly good mate
Ive just ordered this tea, im buying this in Dec and is listed as spring, is there a rough rule of thumb for when spring tea shouldn't be purchased? because it is old or probably not spring?
Longjing is harvested only in Spring, they're good for a year, after which it loses flavour. Dec is fine.

So Chineese always drink their tea like that from a glass? Do they measure the time somehow or not?
how much water to leaf do they use with this method? Do they just drink it to their meals? How long do the infusions take?
If you check out our Grandpa Style brewing video then this will give you more information.
Moreover, if you use too much teaware, people of there will even think you are not an authentic longjing enthusiast
... I don't know why, but it is the style of people in Zhejiang brewing their tea.
What gives this tea its nuttiness? I thought it was the processing but then you remarked how the raw tea leaves have nuttiness.
I hate that they cut down the older original trees just so can get some more yield on newer varieties.
Yes it's completely awful. New soulless variations of teas to fit soulless consumption ;/
I have found some green teas being sold as "Lung Ching"... is this just a common denomination to lower grade variety of the Long Jing or an indicative of a completely fake tea?!
No. Lung Ching is a less standard way of writing the pinyin and does not reflect quality.
