After watching a bunch off dye vids and always feeling like something was left out, I figured I would put a quick step by step vid together about all the aspects of dye jobs
Fantastic tutorial. Quick, straight to the point, good/clear voice, and knowledgeable. In only 4:46 minutes I got way more instructions, images and reason-why than what many RUclipsrs give you after half an hour yapping and trying to sound cool behind the camera. Thank you.
I'll add to the general aura of accolade you are receiving here. This is such a well produced and informative video. Thanks for preventing a couple of mistakes I was about to make!
I've watched a few videos on how to do this over the last week or two, I'm only 1:33 into this one and I can already tell it's the best one I've found so far! Informative! Straight to the point and no BS filler; just clear instructions and excellent results 👍👍
thanks sooo very much, appreciate you watching and commenting, if I'm not showing others something informative and new then I'm not doing a good job.. Lol, so I def appreciate the kind words.
how long did you dye the Spyderco for? I want to dye my para 3s digi camo scales to a dark grey or black but would like for the camo pattern to still show through
No worries @ all.. glad to share the info... not long ago I sat at the house with a bottle of Rit Dye and no clue as to the steps, so I just try to help others bypass the unknown Lol..
About 7 mins or so but not long at all, the color will appear darker @ first, but let it swing over the steam for a sec and reveal it's true tint then proceed from there, I would start pulling at about 5mins just so you don't go past the color you want to achieve
Thank you, for watching and the awesome comment, more vids like this one will b e dropping shortly, blade grinds, hand rub blade finishes, and anodizing very soon I promise!!
Thanks for the comment, and making the vid for people needing to know like yourself is what I did it for.. Not so long ago I wanted to know and most videos don't tell every little step and how to manipulate the colors
Thanks, a bunch of people asked me about the Civivi Durus, Mini Archie, & the Reate M.G., I figured I rather just show everyone then explain a bunch of times and it still not be clear.
Awesome video. I'll have to try the acetone steps on my benchmades. I've been able to get them to take dye but only after soaking in bleach for 30 minutes.
No worries, I had to watch so many different vids to try and figure it out. Then, I decided to put one out that touched on the entire process from start to finish, so everyone can join in on the fun!!
Thank for the very informative & indepth tutorial on dying scales, , do you know if this method would be suitable to use on a white bone scaled knife ?
Bet you could do a gorgeous video with either the Proponent or large Bull Mastiff in the kitchen cutting up red and green peppers, scallions, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots and wagyu beef slices. I can just hear the blade snap shut while that fry pan sizzles and smokes in the background!
Outstanding video!!! I have dyed a few G10 scales already. Mostly using Rit Dye More Racing Red and Sapphire Blue. I have a set of Spyderco Para 3 digicamo G10 scales that I wanted to dye using Rit Dye More Graphite to make them look like a black and grey urban camo. I used 3 cups distilled water, 1 cup distilled white vinegar and about 1/4 bottle of the RDM Graphite. Heated up to around 200 degrees and placed the scales in the mixture for about 30 seconds. Took them out, washed/cleaned them and they are dark brown. Wish I could post a pic here of them. Any helpful tips on how I can achieve a black and grey urban camo look? Thanks.
I usually see people use vinegar but notice you didn't. Does the process really need water? Hypothetically could you use straight rit dye for an even more vibrant color?
you can use whatever works for you, there is no set process, but using straight rit would make the color so dark it would look black, if its a darker color such as blue, purple, etc. idk what would happen with lighter colors such as yellow??
Btw, acetone and nitrile gloves don't mix. Acetone eats right through them and has a breakthrough time of only 4 minutes for 10 mil thick gloves (obviously shorter for thinner ones). Latex works well, but causes allergic reactions in some people. Butyl rubber is the best glove material for handling acetone as a solvent, but it is a little harder to come by and more expensive than latex. Just my .02
Yes.. I've dyed my black full size glimpse to a red color and then to a darker blue... I used boiling water and let the scales soak for a long while...
depends on the material and the acetone's strength... a Pilar III's g10 would probably disintegrate into oblivion, but not a Para3 or steel craft would take a while 4 sure. Ive left my civivi odium scales in pure acetone for like 30mins no problem
"YANKEES"!!!! ....like in New York Yankees? You a New Yorker? "Civivi", "Artisan Cutlery"? You have knives that don't say "Liong Mah", "Reate" and "We"on them? Outside of my sarcasm, that metal hanger trick is probably the coolest and most "trick" part of this video.
The snap of that artisan cutlery wharncliffe knife is epic
Damn, your eloquence in speaking and crystal clear explanation earned a sub! Thanks for the video
I’m about to do my first dye job, been watching lots of vids and yours was one of the best I’ve seen…you rock dude…!!!
Thanks for the kind words!!! and for watching
Damn, that's the most concise video on this topic I've ever seen, kudos to you, man!

Dude you had me laughing about same screws in the holes they came out of! We are the same. It matters!
This is an absolutely elegant explanation on how to dye scales. This deserves so many more views! You got a sub from me, bro.

How long did you keep your digicamo spyderco scales in for I want to still see the pattern thank you

No worries, I had to watch so many different vids to try and figure it out. Then, I decided to put one out that touched on the entire process from start to finish, so everyone can join in on the fun!!
Bigger question do you use that plate to cook dinner
there was no plate in the video LMAO!!!
Dope video bro. Nice color....
Thanks, just trying to add a personal touch and make them different from the rest out there.
Thank for the very informative & indepth tutorial on dying scales, , do you know if this method would be suitable to use on a white bone scaled knife ?
Awesome video fanatic.... I just bought a blue prolix that was said to be tuned by you. Is this the case? Did you mod and blue dye a prolix?
its on the way brotha, Sapphire Blue and tuned up yessir!!
@@THEFULLERFANATIC thank you, i can't wait.... Was that you i bought it from???
Bet you could do a gorgeous video with either the Proponent or large Bull Mastiff in the kitchen cutting up red and green peppers, scallions, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots and wagyu beef slices. I can just hear the blade snap shut while that fry pan sizzles and smokes in the background!
What would be a good color my knife handle is orange.. and I suck at being creative with colors
Blue, the original underlying color tone will play a role in the final color hue from the dye, so keep that in mind as well

Cool
Can you bleach the color out of scales??
Absolutely fantastic video with a great explanation man. Earned a sub with me!
Thank you!!! appreciate the sub!!!
Solid video! That Proponent turned out so dope! Is that Rit Dye Synthetic Racing Red?
What kind of rit dye did you use?
Rit Dye/ never synthetic though.. it doesn't take as well 4 some reason.?.?
@@THEFULLERFANATIC interesting. I asked because some RUclipsrs said to only use synthetic rit dye
I usually see people use vinegar but notice you didn't. Does the process really need water? Hypothetically could you use straight rit dye for an even more vibrant color?

What is the name of the one that started with grey scales
That one is called a Civi Durus, its a badass knife, just wish it had a fuller.

Ever dye black scales for a lighter color?...have nice flipper don't care fkr black scales...thn x for information...
Yes.. I've dyed my black full size glimpse to a red color and then to a darker blue... I used boiling water and let the scales soak for a long while...
Acetone?!?!?and it didn’t start to dissolve/melt the plastic????
depends on the material and the acetone's strength... a Pilar III's g10 would probably disintegrate into oblivion, but not a Para3 or steel craft would take a while 4 sure. Ive left my civivi odium scales in pure acetone for like 30mins no problem
