It was bad because it was an awful script. There was nothing good about it but Frances Fisher being in it, who has been in a lot of great movies. The stereotypical Christmas thing is not the problem. Look at Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, among many others. They just dont make them like they used to as cliche as that sounds.
