  • Conductor - Ovidiu Balan
    Bacau , 2008
    Composed in 1941 for the movie " Dangerous Moonlight " , also known as " Suicide Squadron" . The main theme is a folk song " World Outside" . The producers wanted to use the second concert of Rachmaninov , but then , they changed their minds and prefered to have an original soundtrack for their movie , but they requested that it has to be written in Rachmaninov's spirit . So they choosed Addinsell , known also as the "fake Rachmaninov" and asked him to write the music for this movie that stories the love between a beautiful concert pianist and a pilot . The action takes place in Poland during the Second World War .

    Playing this piece at such a hurried rate really does it an injustice. It takes away from the feeling that it should evoke in the listener (me).

    @sdfjklri: Actually the movie, "Dangerous Moonlight," only partially takes place in Warsaw, where the concert pianist/composer, who is also a Polish pilot, meets an American newswoman covering the war there. They meet again in NYC and get married, and she tries to prevent him from returning to the air force. He attempts a kamikaze attack on a Nazi war plane and barely survives but has lost his memory. Eventually his estranged wife, who has come looking for him, helps him regain it...

Brava!

  • @GuinnevereB
    @GuinnevereB 12 лет назад +2

    Yes, it was skillfully played, but I too felt that the soloist and the orchestra were in a hurry to get to the finish. They got through the whole composition in less than eight minutes, whereas it usually takes at least nine. Enjoyable, however.

    I think she did as well as anyone could with this peice. Her piano playing gave some substance to this otherwise haphazardly composed peice. Don't get me wrong, the harmonies are gorgeous and have influenced my own compositions, but the lack of real thematic development is a weakness in this peice. It's more of a collection of simple, straight forward melodies with great chord extensions.

    I loved everything about it, including the faster than usual tempo...except for the cough from somewhere in the audience, around the middle of the concerto! It sounded like it was maybe the camera-handler who coughed?... Oh, well, when you've gotta cough, you've gotta cough...
    Anyway, this was a beautiful and energetic rendition. Wonderful main performer, wonderful orchestra.
