I was thinking a group that wears masks or does ritual body modification of some sort. Then it get filtered over time like the telephone exercise. That's how go could get primary and secondary/tertiary accounts.
You see similar things with fossils if you look into hero bones or mythological creatures. If you read Herodotus and several other ancient writers (names escape me at the moment), they peg gryphons as originating from a specific area of what is now Afghanistan. They're roughly lion sized lion bodied, have bird heads, and wings, and protect their nests, which are made from gold. The relevant areas of Afghanistan do have gold deposits. They also have fossils of protoceratops, which is a smaller hornless precursor to triceratops. It's about the right size, quadrupedal body, has a beaked "bird head", the frills tend to disarticulate up and back ("wings"), and are often found in associations with fossilized nests.

I had to google this, there were alot of accounts of this, and I'm just going to paste one of them:Why does St Christopher have a dog head?
    Saint Christopher
He was reported to be of enormous size, with the head of a dog instead of a man, apparently a characteristic of the Marmaritae. This Byzantine depiction of St. Christopher as dog-headed resulted from their misinterpretation of the Latin term Cananeus (Canaanite) to read canineus, that is, "canine".

That's not a misinterpretation! St. Augustine of Hippo, who lived in 430, one of the most influential early christian fathers, spoke about the existence of the cynocephali and other peculiar races in his book The City of God, claiming that he personally preached them the Gospel. And through his accounts, they became recognized as "morally dumb, sometimes even demonic" - but nonetheless, "redeemable". St. Augustine, one of the most educated men of his time, would certainly not waste part of his time discussing the salvation or damnation of mere "mythological" creatures.

I'm willing to bet it's actually a kind of body modification, perhaps shaping the jaw to protrude and using weights to create a form of jowels. This would explain why the women are "of surpassing beauty" while the men look like dogs - men altered their faces, women did not. If their culture for some reason venerated animals, it might also make sense that their speech changed to match, resulting in perhaps an incomprehensible version of Hindi. And because these changes are mostly exterior (except for the alleged jaw shaping), we wouldn't find any remains that could verify this.
    Just throwing that out there.

    • @eggsoups
      @eggsoups 4 года назад +51

Bossked Or they just choose not to speak and bark instead in reverence to their dog god. I mean there are people in India who hold their arms in the air until they’ve shriveled. But also, I remember seeing a documentary about a set of twins from India or somewhere whose faces were completely covered in hair. Maybe there was a cast of folks at one time with that genetic mutation that was only expressed in the men...

My comment seems to be being yeeted so I'll hijack yours.
There's an animal that begins with "ch" and rhymes with wimp (I may have been yeeted for referring to it, lol). I will now refer to that animal as wimp. Type in "wimp growth" into google. You will find an image of a child and an adult male wimp. The child's face is flat, whereas the adult's is very long (in the context of "dog men", almost snout-like). Now, I've also heard that women retain child-like features, thereby looking cute. It's entirely possible that the men simply grew long jaws in the same way that our shoulders broaden during puberty.
When it comes to communication, it probably goes both ways. The "barking" is probably an exaggeration, in the same way that the Greeks heard foreign talk as "bar, bar, bar". Also, they wouldn't need to speak the other's language in common situations, body language and enunciating common words is probably enough.

There is a syndrome called Hypertrichosis (werewolf syndrome) which causes excessive hair growth. I believe it is a hereditary condition, so if there was a clan with this affliction and they were expelled from, let's say Indian society, their language could have devolved to a point where they were unable to speak. It's just a hypothesis though. The excessive hair growth does make the afflicted look a bit dog-ish.

@@TheZombiesReanimated True enough, there are tribes of pygmies who have gone extinct in living memory. To the uninitiated, in 300 years, their bones won't look much different from children with weird proportions, or maybe adults inflicted with a strange form of dwarfism. this could have been a tribal thing where they shape the heads and faces of male infants like "dogs." It's sort of like the neck stretching rings or head elongation with rocks that other tribes have been proven to take part in. Therefore it makes sense the women didn't have it but the men did suggesting it's not evolutionarily passed. But a traveler wouldn't know of the custom and would thus think they must have been born that way. And if this tribe won't let you near their water, I doubt they're showing you the baby face stretching custom...

    • @jacobblanton5179
      @jacobblanton5179 4 года назад +6

Except some accounts say the women also have these features, and if they were as common and numerous as stated why has there never been found any remains? As a devils advocate for this weird spot of history, I think if researchers came across the remains of "dog headed men" they would assume a weird coincidence or strange burial ceremony and throw out the notion of these being real creatures without another thought. But clear evidence of body malformation would be obviously present and not ignored if found.
Also as to the water, the reason they disallow travellers to their water is territorial and plainly stated as such in the account: they don't want foreigners mucking about too much throughout their lands in fear they would take their women. The water and lands aren't secret themselves.

I know people won’t believe me but August 3, 2021 at about 8 at night me and my daughter left the house and were going to pick up some stuff from her friends that lives like a mile away. Well, I saw a dog running across the road and as I looked at it I knew in my heart it was not a dog. It wasn’t anything like I had ever saw. I wasn’t afraid but my daughter was. As it disappeared beside this abandoned house, my daughter said “Mama, that wasn’t a dog..” I told her I know, I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to frighten her. It’s arms and arm sockets looked human. It ran more awkwardly. It never looked at us. It was broad and tall. It ran with like the front paws hitting the ground and pushing off and the back legs pulling up right to the chest. Kinda like a cheeta or something like that. I personally think it was a demonic manifestation. It was black and looked completely solid. If it wasn’t for the arms and the size I would have honestly thought it was a dog. I just think it’s strange that we both knew immediately it wasn’t what it was supposed to be. I hope that’s what it was I have dogs and it scares me now to go outside at night to walk them because it was like a half of a mile or less away from where I live. If that was true I wonder what else is out there? What if this thing is in my woods? A long time ago about three o’clock in morning like at least a decade ago my dog backed into me in terror and kept barking out the window I mean for at least an hour. He never did that before or again. There was something outside he was afraid of. I wonder if it was that? Who knows? 🤷🏼‍♀️

The cynocephaly have been a side interest of mine. THEY KEEP COMING UP. Like, they pop up in several different time frames and many ancient historians speak of them. Its absolutely bizarre. Ancient writers that by all accounts seem to be legit and not likely to fabricate such things... they not only talk about the cynocephaly, but some even talk about having met them! And they don't seem to be describing people wearing dog fur and head dresses, no, they're actually talking about men with the actual heads of dogs. Its one of the weirdest pieces of niche history. I'm not saying I believe it, its just weirdly well reported by many different sources.

Have you ever listened to the Dogman encounters radio channel here on RUclips ?
To this day people tell their stories of running into these creatures ... some of them are horrifying .
Regrettably the more recent ones just are not that good , not very riveting and in fact some of these people did not actually see the dog man .
The older stories are better and you might want to start with number 315 even though it gets off to a really slow start and he talks a lot of details once the story gets going you realize that by the end they could make a movie out of it .
There's no way I think that guy made it up .. I definitely believe him .
The man in black whom the military bought in to shut him up told him that " we need them " ... the Dogmen .
Some believe they are here to protect us from more dangerous entities .
People from all over call his show... many of them from North America but some from the UK .
On average they seem to be 7 ft tall but there are so many stories of them being AT LEAST 10 FT TALL .
Grown men ... military men , sheriffs , hunters so traumatized by their experience that it brings them to tears and gave many of them PTSD .
I heard there's 6 different types where some of them just look like giant dogs walking on two legs and others that look exactly like the classic hollywood werewolf .
The latter are known to be extremely smart .
People always talk about the extreme fear that they felt being around Dogmen and many say they are pure evil .
They are known to give off a vibe and a sound that can literally temporarily paralyze a person .
Like skunks they can give off an odor as a form of defense/ offense that is said to be so unbearable and it smells like a combination of urine , garbage , and rotting meat .
They are known to be telepathic and communicate with humans without using words in the typical way .
There are stories of them following people home many many miles after a confrontation and even stalking people around their properties .
The American natives have known about them forever but regrettably with all their great wisdom do not even talk to each other about them because they don't like to even say the name of any of the supernatural creatures .
Some have more human like hands that still have claw like nails

Another channel that has some good dog man stories is Brenton Sawin Channel.
One story is of a guy driving at night alone through the desert outside of Las Vegas when he sees 12 dogmen marching rank and file like soldiers .
And that wasn't too far from a military base ... makes you wonder what's going on or if the dog man started mimicking the soldiers or maybe are actually being trained by them ... there are stories of the military having some kind of sonar device that can control and subdue them through pain which actually makes me sad .
Someone in England saw them use this and that's in one of the stories on Dogman encounters channel .
There is another story of a guy seeing a family of them walking down the road .... they pass him and then up the head a little while later an accident ... ambulances ... military men .

Most likely related to the Vedda or the negrito people of southeast asia. Effectively the first native people of india who were displaced or intermixed with the current indian population. Basically the tribe of humans that migrated to Australia and became the aboriginals past through india and left populations behind who would have been different in appearance and religion to the rest of the indian population who are descended from later migrations.
A remnant population of these could have survived and a racist historian with bad eyesight may have thought that they resemble dogs. They would have spoken a completely different language and religion, they were largely hunter gatherers and low tech with would explain the lack of clothing and their simple dwellings. Cannibalism (largely ritualistic) has been recorded amongst the Papuans and the Australians so that also lends credence to those claims.
Everything else is embellished but if they were based off of a real group then it would have been similar to those.

It's not like pacific islanders would have their own steel production process, it would require way too much specialisation that would be required to get the right amount of (reasonably) pure carbon mixed in with the right amount of molten iron, and then beat ingots into body-shaped plates. Plus more than a few western heavy cavalry helms of the period have more than a passing resemblance to a 'dog head'.

I'd be willing to bet that whatever cave-dwelling tribes these explorers came across may have in some way venerated wild dogs, perhaps hunting them from the local area and wearing their heads like helmets or masks. (The best modern example I can think of would be Vulpes Inculta, a member of Caesar's Legion in Fallout: New Vegas.) They additionally could have just been very hairy, in line with the veneration of animals. I also wouldn't be surprised to hear about ancient Indians worshipping bovines, that's definitely a cultural trend in that region. As for cannibalism, that's going to vary a lot by region and general culture of that society, but if they were straight up cave dwelling tribals, I would not be surprised.
Implying that every writer mentioned isn't just lying or were being lied to, it's likely this is a series of misunderstandings that eventually became popular enough to become local myth and spread from there.

You should make a video about Ibn Battuta. I read a book about him and he's basically like a Middle-Eastern Marco Polo. Very interesting guy.

How will Carl react once he learns that these entities are real, and are pre-flood entities coming up from inner earth?
Or that the Woodwose/Wildman(Green Man) of ancient Britain is no other than the Sasquatch.

In City of God, Augustine tells us that it was Pythagoras who came up with the word “philosopher”. Prior to this it was customary practice to refer to men of great learning as “sages”. As sage is synonymous with wisdom, i.e., “sage advice”. Pythagoras, Augustine says, did not feel worthy or at least didn’t like the idea of being called wise and preferred to call himself a lover of knowledge.

We see the slow descent of that dog civilization. At first, the wore clothes, but grew progressively naked. Then they started taking brides from regular looking women and probably stoned their own dog-headed females. Until, eventually all their children inherited the human faces of their mothers.

That last account, because the Moroccan chap thought the women beautiful but the men dog-like, sounds like they were a tribe where the men were ritually scarified, tattooed or disfigured. Like the peoples with lip-plates or those women with the stretched necks. Something along those lines.

It's quite simple, a village or group of villages would use dog heads or wolf heads as headdresses. Just like Native americans, and others around the world.
    Very simple

Random question, though very late. Is it selu-sid or selay-ou-sid? I've heard it pronounced both ways. Unlike Macedonia, in which c is pronounced as a hard K even though some mistakenly pronounce it with a soft c, I'm not sure.

My guess is that it started off with a mistranslation of a description of a foreign culture or tribe, from Greek, Indian, Persian, or some other language, and it was taken at face value and became a widespread Meme.

    Possible explanations:
    1) A tribe of people who wear preserved dogs heads like a headdress, possibly for ceremonial reasons. The "first-hand accounts" may have been from enough distance that this distinction could not be made. The rest is just the regurgitation of local folklore about the tribe by others in the area.
    2) Genetic mutation due to severe inbreeding led to a tribe with severe facial deformities, possibly even deformities only affecting those with a Y-chromosome. If you don't believe this to be possible, look up the ostrich-foot people in Africa. Some people's feet look like ostrich feet - maybe some people's faces look like dog faces.
    3) Some combination of 1) and 2).
    4) Dog-headed people really exist.

In Hungary the Tatars are referred to as the Dog Headed riders.
I've heard Europeans often called anyone (especially steppe nomads) coming from the east Dog Headed (including pre-christian Hungarians).
I always assumed, because the Tatars use a Dog/Wolves head in their flags and eastern European/Central Asian nomads generally use a lot of wolf related symbolism, that it kinda evolved from that association.
