German dancehall, with Culcha Candela 🖤💚💛❤️ The way Rachel introduces each genre is awesome, especially when she autotune her voice to introduce Deutschrap 👍👍👍👍👍
In my experience, from about 35 year olds and younger you definitely can count the German dubbed Pokémon intro song in on that nostalgia list, even in broad daylight sometimes.
2:30 You nailed it, Rachel. Most of Rammstein songs used rolled R except 'Rosenrot' where they seldom use it. If you're curious about the German History, go for Deutschland. Deutschland, deine Liebe... ist Fluch und Segen Deutschland, meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben Germany - your love is a curse and blessing Germany - my love ... I can't give you.
As a German metal fan I was very pleasantly suprised by the summary on rock music. You named some solid classics and especially bands from very different subgenres. And I just noticed how little I know about the local rap and techno scene. I haven't heard about a single techno artist.
Tbf, electronic music is huge but it's more of a club thing and less with a few artists that sell records in huge numbers, like other genres. Honestly, probably 25-50% of my female friends are all about it (interestingly female dominated genre, unlike metal) but everyone just listens to their own preferred semi popular artist.
DW "Meet The Germans", y'all missed one of the most important genres in Music that draws a lot from Germany, Classical Music. With Composers like Bach, Beethoven, Händel, and Wagner.
@@dweuromaxx Karlheinz Stockhausen is more important to the history of German music than Deutschcrap as he allowed (among others) rappers to fake their voice with synthesizers and audio processors.
Because of "Fanta 4", "Die Ärzte" and "Seeed" were mentioned, there aren't a lot of left over. "Die Prinzen" and "Stern Meißen" would be some of the not mentioned one.
As a side note, let's mention some Austrian musicians of all genres who are also very famous in Germany: Udo Jürgens, Peter Alexander, Falco, EAV, DJ Ötzi, Freddy Quinn, Rainhard Fendrich, Wolfgang Ambros ...
For great non-Schlager modern pop ballads in German, I can recommend the band "Ich + Ich" or the solo projects of its vocalist Adel Tawil who's got a great voice and clear enunciation. Good for learning German via music. Available here on YT, too.
As an Indian who learns German language, i have started with the Pop+Jazz music "Luxuslärm" (is not mentioned in this Video) & rock band "Rammstein". After acquiring intermediate fluency, then started hearing "Silbermond", "Nockalm Quintett", "Die Toten Hosen", "Eisbrecher" :)) Sometimes i feel, German Songs has much more to say than the English Songs of the Famous Artistes even.🙂
_Sometimes i feel, German Songs has much more to say_ .. perhaps this is due to the differnce/idfficulty of the language? for me as a german it is quite different. i very often cringe at the simplistic stupidity of german texts but have much less problems listening to similarly stupid texts in english ...
@@AlexanderGoeres For me also it was difficult at the start but after sometime after hearing the band "Silbermond", i felt a different tone of music and the use of high level vocabularies, that made me love the German Songs. What about the 1950s with Peter Kraus, Conny Froboes, Ted Herold, Trude Herr, Hazy Osterwald (okay; he's Swiss), Peter Alexander, Catarina Valente, Gitte ...
It's not about having forgotten someone to mention, it's about the sheer variety of styles of music, that you simply just can't mention them all. Personal preferences, music you won't ever listen to or listen to all the time. You just cannot tell who you omitted.
The list is lacking what we call "Liedermacher" or Balladeers (that mostly do political songs) like Hannes Wader, Konstantin Wecker, Reinhard Mey, Wolf Biermann, Fredl Fesl and younger ones like Eric Fish (Singer of the medieval metal band Subway to Sally). Liedermacher were pretty popular from the 60s to the late 90s and most Germans (even those born after the era) know at least one song. Wikipedia has an endless list: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liedermacher
I also think krautrock is great, but the average german dude you meet in the 'Fussgängerzone' probably has never heard of it. I.e. Its only a thing for real music-nerds
Herbert Grönemeyer helps me so much with his beautiful German language and his hopeful and humorous lyrics. Btw some of the pictures you choose of him are amongst my favorites he was so cute in the 1980's.
Here's some of what you missed: Singer/songwriters like Reinhard Mey and others, especially lyrically dense songs like 'Narrenschiff" and "Das Meer", and verbal imagery like 'Gute Nacht, Freunde" and "Manchmal da fallen mir Bilder ein". Singers who go way back, like Marlene Dietrich and Zarah Leander, or guys that tug on the heartstrings, like Freddy and Heino. If you dare, try on some songs in Austro/Bavarian dialect, like Ambros, Danzer, or Kapfinger. Of course, once the party gets going and everybody is good and liquored, it's time for "Grieeeechischer Weiiiiin, ist so wie das BLUUUT der Erde .....".
Ostrock! Especially if you were raised behind the Wall, you will sure know Karat's "Über Sieben Brücken", City's "Am Fenster", the Puhdy's "Eisbär" or Keimzeit's "Kling Klang". Or, if you were raised after the Wall came down, but your parents still blast the same Maxi-Ostalgie-CD they bought in 1999 or so :)
Null Positiv - undertone singing heavy metal (listen to: "Wo Rauch ist ist auch Feuer") d'Artagnan - ummm ... hard to classify (listen to: "Was sollen Wir trinken") Boney M - oldies/disco (Listen to "Rasputin"...)
There was also this interesting phenomenon in the 90s of German producers recording Eurodance songs, often 1 hit wonders, with foreign (usually US but others too) singers, songs and artists that no one necessarily loves but *every* millennial knows. Those would include Captain Jack, Snap! (Rhythm Is A Dancer, The Power), La Bouche, Mr. President (Coco Jambo), Haddaway (What Is Love, yes it's German), Culture Beat (Mr. Vain), Milli Vanilli... Also some other 90s stuff like Lou Bega, Scooter and Modern Talking. It's funny that most everyone knows them (even internationally) but no one has an inkling (with the exception of the last two) that these are German. That's probably why no one mentioned them.
In thought the same. There are some quite popular one hit wonder songs, equal type of music in the 90th and some are still very popular at "Neunziger-Parties".
Drafi Deutscher - Marmor Stein und Eisen bricht. Marvellous song, full of energy and I have some fond memories of it. Peter Maffay - Du, big hit in the Netherlands.
Spot on! Brought back some great memories of the 1980s and early 1990's. Back then, it was party time in Germany with the wall coming down. I was there...and it was goooooood!
A really nice overview, and I appreciate that you didn't simply sh... all over Schlager like most people do for various reasons. But I feel you missed some important figures of German music, above all Reinhard May, who is basically a German Chansonist. You also covered Raggae and Rap aso but somehow missed out on mentioning the whole Wave and Gothic scene (and the WGT - and Unheilig), the whole German Techno Movement, the different kind of experimental music (see Blue Man Group and Co), you mentioned none of the actual classics from Bach up to Schubert, and (though I guess this is somewhat understandable) you completely overlooked the importance of German music for children, especially Rolf Zuchowski.
This made me smile Rachel.😀🙌👌 Vieken danke as a child of the 70's but i know a few of these artists, my favourite as a rock and blues lover is of course Rammstein but remember a few others growing up. Just like i remember some of the french artists like Jean-Jaques Goldnan and Jean-michel Jarre.
Very well done… ABER 😅 … You missed a lot: Udo Lindenberg, the great Rock-star from the North with a big heart and even a Musical about his story. Marianne Rosenberg, Schlagerstar from the 70s and of course Marius Müller-Westernhagen… and German Punk: Die Toten Hosen!!! 💪🏻🙋🏼♂️
Although reunifcation took place more than 30 years ago, it would be worthwhile having some GDR legacy reflected here too. With regards to music there are so many musicians originating from East Germany who set standards let it be City, Silly, Karat, Puhdys...
Great video as always! Choices were perfect. I would add Die Sterne and other bands of the 'Hamburg Schule' alt-rock scene such as Blumfeld and Tocotronic
I know that this video is mostly about German musicians but I think some notable Austrian musicians shouldve been mentioned too, like my current personal favourite (though his peak was around the 70‘s Schlager scene) Peter Alexander with songs like „Wie Böhmen noch Bei Österreich war“ or „Mädchen Weine Nicht“ or „Bei Uns zuHaus“ or „Die kleine Kneipe" Another thing I think shouldve been included was the Volksmusik scene with musicians like Heino with songs like „Blau Blüht der Enzian“ or „Edelweiss (Soll Ich Denn Mein Junges Leben)“

It's also worth noting that german music really likes to mix genres. A lot of rock and metal bands mix techno with metal for example, my favourite being Eisbrecher.

German carnival music is the best. Although I’m more of a metal head and typically listen to German stuff like Kreator and Destruction, I have a soft spot for happy/goofy carnival jams. Mainly because I grew up in Germany as a military brat and associate good times to that music.

I just think Rio Reiser and/or Ton Steine Scherben should have been mentioned from a historical point of view. I also think the time travel from Fanta 4 to Capital Bra was a bit to big. People should get at least some little examples of rap artitst that were big in between and an idea of how Deutschrap developed the way it did.
I think Udo Lindenberg would have been worth a mention, because he is one of the first ones who used german language in Rock music context, and in his case it worked fine since he was a really talented songwriter in his beginnings.

German dancehall, with Culcha Candela 🖤💚💛❤️
The way Rachel introduces each genre is awesome, especially when she autotune her voice to introduce Deutschrap 👍👍👍👍👍
Deutschland, deine Liebe... ist Fluch und Segen
Deutschland, meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben
Germany - your love
is a curse and blessing
Germany - my love
... I can't give you.
And the video give a lot of hints about german history.
As a German metal fan I was very pleasantly suprised by the summary on rock music. You named some solid classics and especially bands from very different subgenres.
And I just noticed how little I know about the local rap and techno scene. I haven't heard about a single techno artist.
Glad to hear this! A colleague gave me some great tips on different rock bands :)
Of course - German classical warrants an entire episode! We were focussing on the more contemporary here, but we fully appreciate the classics. 🎼
True I was too offended because they failed to show the best classical music on earth
@@scharnhorstkaisarbeethoven I was not offended, I was more dumb founded.
If you are dealing with classical music, what about contemporary composers? Rihm, Lachenmann, Pintscher, etc. Art but not really entertainment.
Rio Reiser and Ton Steine Scherben could also be mentioned for the punk scene in Germany
Good point!
I wouldn't consider them punk but proto-punk.
Also from Austria: Bilderbuch, Left Boy
As a side note, let's mention some Austrian musicians of all genres who are also very famous in Germany: Udo Jürgens, Peter Alexander, Falco, EAV, DJ Ötzi, Freddy Quinn, Rainhard Fendrich, Wolfgang Ambros ...
@g2 Not to forget Wanda, Mavi Phoenix or Voodoo Jürgens.. 😆
For great non-Schlager modern pop ballads in German, I can recommend the band "Ich + Ich" or the solo projects of its vocalist Adel Tawil who's got a great voice and clear enunciation. Good for learning German via music. Available here on YT, too.
Thanks for the tips!
But i haven't had this feeling while hearing Rammstein, but still Rammstein has Good music and good stage performance.
Tbf Nockalm Quintett are from Austria
@@p3chv0gel22 Here we speak only about German musics brother. Das ist Egal, ob Wir ueber die Deutschen Musik aus dem Oesterreich / Deutschland / Schweiz gesprochen haben
@@rajeshganesan1968 rammstein was one of the first german bands I ever listened to. Instant hit.
"schiller" - Christopher vpn Deylen - finest electronic musik, sometimes orchestral
I commend your production: very creative, smooth transitions, dynamic and excellent camera work. Really well done and superbly narrated.
Cascada would be the one I first think of. They were huge here in Canada
I listened to Die Fantastichen Vier back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. My favorite cut was "MFG." It's still catchy.
Alphaville is worth mentioning!
Dis is not Schlager!
Waaaas, wusste gar nicht, dass die deutsch sind! xD GoiL
Aber es ging doch um Deutschland. Alphaville ist aber doch "Big in Japan"! ;-)
Some famous German acts worth mentioning:
Alphaville
Dschinghis Khan (idk if I pronounced corrrectly)
Boney M
ACCEPT
Modern Talking (second best selling German band behind Scorpions)
Tokio Hotel
Oomph
Die Toten Hosen
die Ärtze
Sandra
ATC (their members are not German but their songs were founded in Germany)
La Bouche
Donna Summer (I know she is partly German)
Felix Jähn
Robin Schulz
a lot of rap-hip hop acts from the 90s such as Nana or C-Block.
And let's not forget Lena who won the Eurovision in 2010. 😂😂😂
Alle Farben
What about the 1950s with Peter Kraus, Conny Froboes, Ted Herold, Trude Herr, Hazy Osterwald (okay; he's Swiss), Peter Alexander, Catarina Valente, Gitte ...
It's not about having forgotten someone to mention, it's about the sheer variety of styles of music, that you simply just can't mention them all. Personal preferences, music you won't ever listen to or listen to all the time. You just cannot tell who you omitted.
My favorite German musician is Peter Maffay. His music from the 1970s and the ‘80s is absolutely wonderful and pleasing to the ears.
Ja, sicher. Peter Maffay muss dabei sein. 😊
Rachel, greetings from Leipzig. You left out my favourite - Peter Fox, Haus am See.
I recently discovered "Clueso" and god, i can't stop listening to that guy's music!
I grew up with lots of Reinhard Mey. :D True, they are important too and Reinhard Mey for example sings very clearly and understandable.
but there are no actual liedermacher anymore .. noone comparable to the ones you mentioned.
Die Ärzte, absolute best lyrics and best musik from germay :) AUS BERLIN!!
My favourite German band was Trio. - "Da Da Da"
You forgot a big scene of dark wave and goth - Peter Heppner, Camouflage, GÖthes Erben, Wolfsheim etc :-)
Can't say I've come across this - thanks for the tip :D
Love these so much!
Die Liedermacher wir rheinhard Mey, Konstantin Wecker, Klaus Lage oder Hannes Wader sind ein ganz eigenes Genre der deutschen Musik
I'm not sure what actual Germans would call it- or if they even like it- but what we call 'Krautrock' from the late 60's-70's is pretty great.
Germans call it _kosmische Musik_ . Bands such as Can, Faust, Neu!, and early Kraftwerk. Very art schooly!
@@sbor2020 - I only came to it by the backdoor- Karlheinz Stockhausen- who is often grouped into this style.
Tangerine Dream.
Yeah, Can did spring to mind for me
I also think krautrock is great, but the average german dude you meet in the 'Fussgängerzone' probably has never heard of it. I.e. Its only a thing for real music-nerds
City - "Am Fenster" is very high up on the Eastern Germany nostalgia playlist.
I'm from Germany and this has got to be the first time I watched a youtube video about Germany and the comments weren't full of comments in German.
I always learn something new from these videos. Thanks Rachel and DW.
Our pleasure!
I also love the german folk music like: Faun ♥️♥️♥️
Null Positiv - undertone singing heavy metal (listen to: "Wo Rauch ist ist auch Feuer")
d'Artagnan - ummm ... hard to classify (listen to: "Was sollen Wir trinken")
Boney M - oldies/disco (Listen to "Rasputin"...)
Faun and Santiano are missing.
And of course the Cologne music Gods Höhner and Brings.😉
Great video again, Rachel. Can´t wait for the next one.😊
Well if you mention Faun and Santiano you should also bring in Oonagh.
I guess I'll have to do a part two...! Thanks for sharing all these extra suggestions :)
super gemacht. tolle Show und Aufführung. Viel Glück und Erfolg weiterhin
This made me smile Rachel.😀🙌👌
Vieken danke as a child of the 70's but i know a few of these artists, my favourite as a rock and blues lover is of course Rammstein but remember a few others growing up.
Just like i remember some of the french artists like Jean-Jaques Goldnan and Jean-michel Jarre.
Element of Crime. Sven Regner's use of language is quite unique and the sound is so distinctive.
Wenn ein Udo, dann Udo Jürgens bitte! Vielen Dank für die Blumen....
Westernhagen and Die Toten Hosen got a little mention at the end ;) but yep I think we need a part two :D
All love from India... Rachel maam has such a catchy and nice voice
Knorkator - Deutschlands meiste Band der Welt
"The Schlechst of..." "Hasen Chart Breaker" "High Mud Leader"
"Wir freuen Euch, uns zu sehen"
how about Falco- not german, but austrian and his song "Rock me Amadeus" was the first song in german language on top of us single charts in 1986
I missed the songs from the GDR time, called "Ostrock".
Every german music list is incomplete without the König von Deutschland, Rio Reiser!
Definitiv! :P
I know that this video is mostly about German musicians but I think some notable Austrian musicians shouldve been mentioned too, like my current personal favourite (though his peak was around the 70‘s Schlager scene) Peter Alexander with songs like „Wie Böhmen noch Bei Österreich war“ or „Mädchen Weine Nicht“ or „Bei Uns zuHaus“ or „Die kleine Kneipe"
Another thing I think shouldve been included was the Volksmusik scene with musicians like Heino with songs like „Blau Blüht der Enzian“ or „Edelweiss (Soll Ich Denn Mein Junges Leben)“
Looking at the comments i am really surprised how many people are mentioning bands like Saltatio Mortis, Santiano, Feuerschwanz (dArtagnan), Eisbrecher, Faun and many others. Because where i am from, i am the only one who listens to them.
Tangerine Dream - one of the first prog rock bands. Their current music is still great.
My favourite german artistes that I've come across on you tube, are Franzl Lang, Gitti und Erika and Voxxclub.I'm also a huge fan of the Swiss german folk band Oesch's drie dritten
WHAT IS MISSING??? Just start to browse the playlist history of VIVA TV from the 90's. I loved to watch it after tthe school when I got home. And I'm missing those times so much. I was born and grown up in Hungary and I was 15 yrs old in 1995 when I found VIVA TV on the cable tv and it was a LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.
Being from Cologne I think you should mention Wolfgang Niedecken and Bap, a German singer/songwriter singing in his Cologne dialect and having become one of germans biggest protest singers still being famous
I'm a bit late but Udo Lindenberg is a german music legend.
It is sweet to know more german artist! The only german artist I know is Digitalism of Hamburg, a mainly Techno duo.
It's also worth noting that german music really likes to mix genres. A lot of rock and metal bands mix techno with metal for example, my favourite being Eisbrecher.
Good observation, Angel!
I mean right bow we have artists breaking music borders
Eskimocallboy for excample
Helenfischer with her song lius fonsi
Vanessa mai und fourty
And so on its good music os to enjoy together and speration of the geres is hurtful to our music industry so letting them worn together is amazinh
@@catyhell724 Eskimocallboy is awesome!
Thank you for mention wacken, my favorite german band is Helloween.
German carnival music is the best. Although I’m more of a metal head and typically listen to German stuff like Kreator and Destruction, I have a soft spot for happy/goofy carnival jams. Mainly because I grew up in Germany as a military brat and associate good times to that music.
Frank Muschalle, Luca Sestak. Boogie Woogie and blues.
A bunch of my favorite bands are German, and I'm from Venezuela, like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Running Wild, edguy, Avantasia, The Michael Schenker Group, Freedom call, Accept, Lucifer's friend, Stormwarrior, Kreator, Sodom and off course the ones you mentioned Rammstein, Blind Guardian and the mighty Scorpions
The quality of the videos is getting better and better, kudos Rachel 👏🏼
Thanks, Arjun!
What an Amazing doku!!!!! I can’t stop watching DW!!!!
Scooter has probably toured Australia more than any other German artist (even Rammstein), and even had a number one on the singles charts here
I just think Rio Reiser and/or Ton Steine Scherben should have been mentioned from a historical point of view. I also think the time travel from Fanta 4 to Capital Bra was a bit to big. People should get at least some little examples of rap artitst that were big in between and an idea of how Deutschrap developed the way it did.
Greetings from Miami! I love your videos! You do an amazing job coming up with engaging content, acting and editing!!!! All the best always :)
Thank you so much!! Happy you're a fan😁
Corvus Corax (and Tanzwut) would be my weird missing choice to nominate.
I think Udo Lindenberg would have been worth a mention, because he is one of the first ones who used german language in Rock music context, and in his case it worked fine since he was a really talented songwriter in his beginnings.
just started watching this girls videos yesterday they are great, I remember in 83 there was a song called Major Tom by Peter something that has a Schlanger
Don't forget Falco he was a huge Austria singer and was very famous in Germany or Pur the Schlager Band of all time and Andera Berg the Helene Fischer from older Generation .
Yeah and don't forget the huge genre of medival Music with Bands like Versengold oder Salatio Mortis :)
My Favorit German Artist Yeah I said Artis Not musician because I think He is more than that is Alligatoah a german rapper and Poet his Lyrics are amazing !
Falco had the one song here in the USA...
@@OhioTravelswithKris yeah in the USA but in Germany and Austria He was a big musician befor he died by a car accident
He hasn't had only Amdaeus :D ( is it the right grammar? )
