Best WW2 story ever: I grew up hearing my grandfather fought in the pacific in WW2 and was shot down in a plane by the Japanese, spent 6 weeks in a coma, came out, was sent home and discharged. Well, turns out he actually got drunk with some buddies, STOLE a plane, crashed it and put himself in a coma for 6 weeks. Grew up my entire life thinking my grandpa was a war hero. Turns out, he was just a stupid 19 year old drunk who pounded too much whiskey and stole a fucking plane. I personally prefer the real story to the fabrication.

I'm have a lowly B.A. in History. I have to admit being surprised at what our learned friend doesn't know considering his education. He should at least have acknowledged that he was fuzzy on some details (which he does later), no shame in that. A few glaring ones: 1. There were 5 landing beaches on D-Day. 2. The Australians landed troops on D-Day. He seems pretty solid on the American stuff as you would expect, maybe to the exclusion of other countries' participation. A common criticism of Americans' recounting history. While MacArthur took centre stage for the signing of the Peace on the USS Missouri, there were representatives from UK, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands. Only fair, since they had been fighting the war with Japan for more than two years before ole' Doug showed up.
The discussion about "The Great Escape" is enlightening. There were no Americans in "The Great Escape" in reality. It was an accommodation in the movie because Hollywood knew Americans wouldn't watch it otherwise. The real people who were involved in the production were okay with it, because they wanted the story told. The guy who was depicted by Charles Bronson - "The Tunnel King" - was actually a guy from Toronto: Wally Floody.
Still, I'm thrilled "people of a certain age" are taking an interest in and talking about this stuff. Atta go Jim!

Bit of info from The Netherlands: The Dutch were run over in 3 days. This wasnt because we welcomed the Nazi's, but we tried to pull off a "we are neutral" (feel free to do the accent). The Dutch army was poorly equiped with WWl weapons and the finishing blow was a brutal bombardement on the port city of Rotterdam. Still there are German Tourists in Rotterdam asking where the 'Altstadt' or historical city is. The average Rotterdam dockworker does not respond well to this question ;)

In my small town, Narvik, Hitler had his first defeat of WW2.
Our harbour is the only all year round ice free harbour in the North that can transport iron ore from Sweden, so it was extremely important.
The battle went on for months after Norway had surrendered.
Aided by English, French and Polish soldiers there was heavy fighting here.
The nazis took it back in the end though, but their fleet paid a heavy prize. Our fjords are littered with warships.

I always found it mildly confusing when english speakers referred to “Das Dritte Reich” as “The Third Reich”, why translate only 2 of the 3 words? It’s meaning is “The Third Empire” and as far as I have learned it referred to the previous big mainland Europe empires: The Roman Empire and The Holy Roman Empire. (The latter of which had nothing to do with Rome or Romans and if I remember correctly was mostly germanic) Also another fun thing about not translating things, english speakers saying “The Führer”, which basically just means “leader”. They still have some führers, but these days it’s mostly chill guys like a “Bergführer” (Mountain Leader) which is a mountain guide. Also had a chuckle while typing this when I translated “Panzerfaust” for no reason at all and thought to myself that “Tank Fist” would be a hilarious title for a Porn where girthy lesbians punch each other in certain parts of their anatomy. But that might’ve only been funny to me because I’ve watched too many Jim Jefferies specials on repeat…

I knew Russia had the most losses with over 24 million but China came in 2nd with huge losses too of about 20 million. China actually had the top losses for quite some time, until Russia's count eventually surpassed it. Germany came in 3rd with almost 9 million and Poland 4th with about 5.6 million. The Dutch East Indies had a surprisingly high number and India had about 2.5 million. Japan had about 3 million. Then you add up all the other countries involved, it is a shockingly high number.

I don't think the battle of Okinawa was the last battle in the war, it was the last American battle in the the war. It took place in June 1945. The Russians didn't invade Manchuria until August 1945. There were about 2 million troops involved and a number of battles, so the last battle of the war would have been fought between Russians and Japanese in Manchuria or Korea, with the fighting lasting up until the end of the war on 2nd of September 1945.

English speaking French people like me just think you're the best!
But yeah, realistically, you wouldn't fill an arena because unlike in Germany or other European countries, most French people either don't understand English well enough or wouldn't grasp your (lovely) accent.
It's not just about us, though, I bet you'd have the same issue with Spain or Italy.

@@sativarosegold3604 It's not about basic academic understanding, I'm sure you realize there's a big difference between what were taught at school and the knowledge you need to understand a podcast with someone speaking in anything else than the standard English accent. Jim is not hard to understand, but he's not what basic learners are used to

Any bet a Channel 7 producer saw that John Cleese, legend though he is, never misses an opportunity to drop some pro-Brexit rant in to any appearance he makes. Old mate manages to drop that shit in the middle of birthday messages on Cameo.
It would be amazing if the French Chef interrupts AGT broadcasts to do the same.

I watched a documentary about Normandy and they said what happened on Saving Private Ryan with the bullets was true because the Germans were using guns with less firepower than what was used to test the theory on Myth Busters. And because the rounds were fired slower, they didn't shatter on impact with the water and were able to penetrate further into the water.

What are the lyrics to the judging a book by its cover song? My boyfriend and his friend think it’s yesdo and I say it’s yes no. This argument has been going on too long. Thanks love you jack

    • @Matthew-ve7uv

Clearly it's yes no. Not only from the very clear and repeated enunciation, but also from the context and grammar. This is not a remotely close-run thing. Sorry to hear that you need to dump your boyfriend, but there are plenty more fish in the sea (or, as your boyfriend would say, "There are plainly more automobiles in the forget").

Four Lions is a movie tangentially related to the war in Afghanistan. It's about four bumbling British jihadists who try to join the Taliban. It's actually brilliant even though it sounds like it could be a disaster.

The Dutch where clapping ? Are you insane ? They bombed the shit out off is cuz the allies where still eating hotdogs in Belgium instead off helping out the Dutch. They fought for 5 days in a country that is 150 km long.. hundreds of people including my family died during the bombing off the Rotterdam port so , no , we were not clapping for the Germans .
