Macro photography is amazing! These Kenko extension tubes are a great introduction to macro photography and are available for Canon, Nikon and Sony Cameras.
HI there New to this channel I only have a Canon 1200D I have a 50mm and a Tamron mega zoon11.1 does it have to be Kenko Macro tubes or is there a cheaper version?
Paul, I must say that I love your videos. They are extremely detailed and explained in a very easy way to understand. Thank you so much for posting these videos! ✌️
Thank you so much. You saved me having to return the extension tubes I received today. I couldn’t figure out how they worked. You really helped me. I have since gotten pictures of beautiful flowers and a frog. I will continue to watch your videos. Thank you.
I have just purchased some extension tubes as I didn’t want to pay for an expensive lense after purchasing a new camera and other accessories 😬 I love the effect of Macro photography and wow I want disappointed, absolutely fantastic quality for a fraction of the cost of a lens....Can’t wait for the flowers to start coming out 🌹🌷💐 thanks for another straight forward easy to understand video Paul 👍
I have to say yours are the best a d most detailed videos on RUclips you always go the extra mile to help and I have learnt so much in such a short time. Thank you and best wishes from Liverpool uk
I just purchased a set of macro tubes and have not had much of a chance to use them. After seeing this video I am ready to go for it. Thanks for the vlog.
Great video. I've been salivating over the prospect of buying a macro lens for a while now and was building up to a purchase (possibly the Tamron 90 mm f2.8 or the Laowa 100mm 2 x1 macro) but the coronavirus pandemic , and its resulting economic consequences , have blown my plans out of the window. I think extension tubes are the way to go, at least until better times, when I can again think about buying a dedicated macro lens.
The use of extension tubes effectively reduced teh amount of light which hits the image plane. Most modern cameras can compensate for this pretty easily but some older ones cannot. Worth keeping that in mind. They are cheap though, which is great. If you are looking at the Kenko ones online, not all of them are EF-S compatible so also watch out for that.
Finally, an explanation of what extension tubes do and how they work. Looks like an inexpensive way to try macro photogophy be fore buying an expensive lens.
I have a tamron 75/300 with macro and what you have just showed me now that function on the lens all makes sense, as when in macro the lens extends to the full length and locks, I have also purchased a light ring which I will now put to the test, many thanks 🇬🇧
This is just what I was after. I saw you use these in an earlier video explaining what they do, and I have an interest in macro photography. On holiday in Cornwall last week, I wandered into a charity shop that had a cabinet full of camera bits. (None of the lenses fitted my canon EF-S) but I found a set of macro extension tubes that fitted my camera, for 5 quid. I was well chuffed.
Good information, I’m finding a 50mm is the smallest lens that works for me, anything shorter you just have to be too close and there is a light problem, I’ve also had good luck with an old Canon FD 85mm f1.8, no need to mess with auto focus and you can be farther from the subject. These rings are a good way to use old FD lenses without auto focus and have the Aperture setting on the lens, just shoot in manual .
Hi, I know that KENKO used to be a sub-brand of Hoya. I have purchased some of their lens filters in the past for the financial savings. They seemed to be good products. Thanks for this video, Paul.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Paul! I’m interested in learning about macro photography and these extensions will make it easy to get into! Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
Paul, please advise: If I use an APS-C camera with it's prime 50mm lens and 68mm of Kenko extension tubes, what magnification would I achieve? If I were to add to the above, a lens reversal adapter, what magnification would I achieve? Many thanks for your anticipated response!
I had a few years ago the basic extension rings without the electronics so manual focus only I still loved it but recently ordered these better style with AF
Help! I am not able to connect my JJC AET-CRF11 extended tube to my Canon Rebel T5. The box it came in reads “For Canon”. Yet the bayonet seems to big to fit the camera body. Surprisingly, I am unable to find a web site or fix fir this
I'm not familiar with that extender Jeff, but it sounds like it is designed for the Canon RF (mirrorless) mount which is larger than the AF mount found on the DSLR cameras.
Thanks, I'm stuck in a rather odd position, I have a full frame Cannon (6D) but as I am not currently working, so buying lenses etc is out, however some extension tubes look like an excellent solution.
Nice explanation, on crop sensor Nikon Z 50 - which lens will be best for macro - 20mm f/1.8 or 70-200mm f/2.8! and do I need ring flash too , I'm holding both these lenses including kit z 18-140mm f/3.5 -6.3
very informative video. thanks. camera gear is so expensive so these make a good alternative. im struggling with the DOF issue myself on macro photography but your tips on using manual focus and coming in to the subject flat is some really useful advice.
@@photogenius i brought the 80d and the Sigma Art lens 18-35 1.8 a few years back. Not state of the art, cost me about a grand in all, but i heard raves reviews about it (especially the lens). I got the nifty Fifty for about £50 and the tubes for macro. Lens are so bloody expensive so if I were to buy one more which would you recommend? or does the sigma cover it? thanks.
Question , I have 2 lenses from Izonix ( Pro Series 2.2x High Definition AF telefoto and 0.43 AF Wide angle lens).. I'm a new photographer. So I thought these were extensions tubes but these have lenses that can't be adjusted, rather it gets screwed to the end of my standard 18-55mm kit lens. My question is... What did I buy ? Would these accessories be considered a variation of extension tubes? Thanks again for the videos. Super helpful!👍
that was great thank you I am waiting for my Kenko tubes to arrive so I will be doing some shots indoors and out in the garden as we are on lockdown here and can't go far stay well down there all the best from trev in Sussex UK
great video , wish i'd found this video before , i kept looking at reviews on amazon & ebay & they were'nt good , one or two said that they'd got the tubes stuck once they'd got them on , so i went & bought a 24mm canon lens , it is very good but it would be nice to have some other distance lens too .
Hey Paul. Thankyou for a nice macro video. I have heard about kenko extention tubes before, but if you are using it then definetly I have to buy. I love macro photography and planning to start doing it. But I was confuse in lenses. Macro lenses are too expensive. Well again a big thanks .... 5stars to you sir.... big fan 👍🏻 And yeah buy her more M&Ms 😁
@@photogenius I got 1300d and 55x250, nifty 50, kit lens and a set of 21,13,33 mm tubes. Is there a way I can get no shallow dof when shooting with these extension tubes?
Hallo overthere. I use a Nikon D7100 and have the opportunity to get an old 55mm Manuel Focus AI Lens. Do the tubes work with this old Lens. Thanks so far.
Hello! I feel the need to know what lenses did you used and when, not just the extension tubes. At the beginning I see 18-55mm, then in the garden that seems a 35mm and the coin is at 50mm. Right? Now, those close close ups at 6:18 ? And what if we use these extension tubes in a 55-250mm for example?
Macro rings don't increase the focal length of the lens - this is not possible because it's a property of the lens themselves. What it does is it increases the minimum distance from which you can focus by extending the focal flange distance. It also takes light so you need to bump the iso or shutter speed or aperture in the lens.
Photo Genius , Thanks. I’m up in Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦 so I will be using the set to try and get closer focus on Snowflakes 😊 I ordered last night and it has begun shipping. It’s slated to get here on January 7th. I will let you know how it goes 👍
Can I use Extension tubes on a tele lens (70-300mm)? I want to capture macro from a distance for insects. Which one will be better: extension tube or macro filter ring adaptor? Thanks
Hi Paul, I have been thinking about extension tubes for macro. I have been looking on line and have not found many positive reviews. Mostly from bad quality, to tubes not fitting properly or falling apart. One review even claimed the tube shorted out the camera. I would like your thoughts on tubes. Any to stay away from and ones that are decent quality at a reasonable price.
Hello Paul. I would like to learn more about macro photography. Your images at the end of the video are fantastic. I have a reflex canon 1300d . In every camera there is a mode macro. What is the difference in the quality of image between extension Kenko and macro mode? I am a cook, can I take photos of my dishes with the extension tube ? Thank you
The macro mode is pretty useless to be fair, the extension tube will allow you to get much closer and capture more detail - however for food photography this may not be suitable. I would consider looking at the 50mm f1.8 prime lens or the 35mm prime, with these lenses you will get more of the food in, plus they will help give you a shallow depth of field so the emphasis is in the food.
Photo Genius hello Paul. I appreciate your quick answer. I have a nifty fifty, that's perfect. I don't see why investing for extension tube, unless if I decided to launch in micro photography one day . I wish I could take photography classes with you but it's impossible ! I live in France 😔 With your help, I saved money. Thank you so much for your tips.
Hello Paul Seeing your videos the last 2 months i have finaly jump into photoraphy and just bought 2 weeks ago a D3400 + AF-P 18-55 VR for 320 euros. I lke also animal and micro photography so my question what should i invest for lens for better micro or animal photography than the stock lens ? For Micro / Macro photography I would suggest getting some extension tubes which you can use with your standard lens. See link for my video on Macro photography : ruclips.net/video/7C65veWj2kQ/видео.html
Hi, your videos are really easy to understand and have helped me a lot! I have one question, with the extension tubes could this work with new born photography as well, taking pictures of their hands and feet etc.?
Paul, thanks for researching these three extension tubes. My fav lens is mu 50mm 1:18 STM. I can use it everywhere by just stepping close or back to get the best focus. Do you recommend the three extensions you demonstrated?
Paul Another excellent video, thanks for the tips on macro as I'm loving to photograph wildlife in the Garden. I went to the Goodwood Revival car event this week while I got some nice photos I have massive problems with shadows I use shutter Priority and Manual settings with auto ISO do you have any tips that might help me improve as it a ongoing problem for me.
I'm not a photo genius, but I found I had some problems with my holiday photos where they were blown out (white), they were way over exposed and I was using semi manual modes that I was used to. Anyways, same thing happened to me again at home, and someone said I needed a lens hood, so I experimented with that and it made a world of difference. If you're contrast is messed up by too-harsh light it will darken your shadows too I think, because your camera is working so hard to keep your exposure level by reducing the blinding light, it will also kill off your darks. I just shielded the top of the lens with my hand. im not saying that's your solution, but its something to think about.
Hi Suz, We are going to be visiting Melbourne soon for a few days and offerings some tuition but no plans to visit Perth just yet - sorry. Thanks for watching.
(Cute ending)...Wouldn't it make sense to buy the cheap $20 extension tubes without the electronics since most macro shooting doesn't seem to use the auto focus?
In theory the answer is yes - but I have not tried this myself so I'd be interested to know if any one has tried this and how things turned out. Thanks for watching.
While it is possible, it makes no sense to do so. Extension tubes are the better option, but I would personally browse Aliexpress or some other Chinese retailer to get the tubes. I got a set of plastic ones for my Canon for 10$. They work great, autofocus works, wouldn't switch for anything else.
@@filip1491 This is what i ordered too and it works very well. I also tested with the reverse ring and it doesn't make no sense like you said. With the reverse you have a super macro rig.

Thank you Paul. Im off again to Perth in February to see my son. Will certainly be taking my camera this time.
How about taking photo of moon at night? Is it possible to closer picture with this tube? (with zoom)
This is for macro only, not a substitute for a telephoto lens.
No. The tubes will shift the plain of focus, meaning you will only be able to shoot things that are close.
(Cute ending)...Wouldn't it make sense to buy the cheap $20 extension tubes without the electronics since most macro shooting doesn't seem to use the auto focus?
Thank you for the tutorial!
Whats the difference with a set extension tubes for $200 and extension tubes that do the same thing for $30?
I haven't seen extension tubes that cheap so I can't comment. For that price I would not have high expectations though!! Thanks for watching Mariyn.
Can I shoot extension tube with 70.200MM f.2.8 G master lens
Excellent video!
Is it possible to use a reverse ring with these extension tubes ? if yes what would be the result ?
@@DaroxxFR I am happy that you managed to figure it out :)
Enjoy your photography.
What’s a good brand for extension tubes for a canon t6
I recommend the Kenko ones, here's a link : amzn.to/2yAPc38
Incredibly helpful!!! Thanks :)
Can this be used in portrait?
Not really, with extensions tubes you have to be really close to the subject, so impractical for portraits.
@@photogenius thank you so much!!!! :)
I have a macro lens for my Canon EOS. Can I use extension tubes and my macro lens at the same time or is that overkill?
No use away man! If you need to get closer and that's the type of shot you want why not.
Thank You. Great video!!!
You are very welcome, thank you for watching and commenting.
