Half in the Bag Episode 160: Us and Paddleton

- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- Mike and Jay talk about Us, the biggest movie at the box office and the highest opening for an original horror film ever. They also talk about Paddleton, a movie that didn't get a theatrical release and that you've never heard of.
Reason you haven't seen Ray Romano all these years cause he was doing voice over work for all 500 Ice Age movies.
@TogoSasquatch ...Fun Fact: The "Ice Age" films from BlueSky Studios were a spinoff of "Land Before Time", the "Ice Age" films would have been Cel Animated and a bit more serious if "Titan A.E." didn't flops so hard..... I bring this up since "Land Before Time" currently has 14 movies and counting.
The show Get Shorty is solid!
Plus the TV show is COMPLETE garbage absolutely STUFFED with unlikeable characters, starting with Ray himself. It's supposed to be funny how wormy he is.
@@RamsTheNameCom titan ae flopped? Haven't seen it since I was a kid but I remember loving that movie. Nostalgia goggles?
@@RamsTheNameCom Hey I dont hate Ice Age it just got over saturated like Land before Time did. If it gives Ray Romano a paycheck then am sure he's not complaining. Am just saying thats what hes been doing when not in movies. It still is movies or was but only his voice.

It worked kind of the opposite way on me. I wanted to avoid spoilers for Us, so I only watched this to scrub past the Us review and see them rip on a pretentious Mark Duplass movie. Then it turns out they covered it first and it's good, WHAT A TWIST!

....Monkey's paw finger slowly curls
This is a genius comment
Damn, you beat me to it.
Fuck this is a top tier comment! Nice dude lol
I dunno after watching the Wish Upon video this seems more like a genies curse
Us is basically the same story as the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode where Bart discovers he has an evil twin that’s shackled in the attic and is fed fish heads
Or the invasion of the body snatchers
Which is basically the same as the subplot of Jane Eyre with Jane's evil twin Bertha chained up in the attic.
Don’t forget that the evil twin was actually IRL Bart so in the end he gets shackled in the attic
It's also the exact same plot as The World's End but with clones instead of Aliens
I felt like this was a easy movie to predict while doing a boring job to think about the trailer enough. It's a doppelganger movie so it's either demons or government experiment. It's a double movie so someone is going to be switched at some point.
So Paddleton isn't about a CG bear in a colorful fictional world?
Ah yes, the fictional town of London, UK
@@christopherlowery3797 It's definitely a fictionalised version of London. Paddington doesn't get stabbed at any point.

It’s interesting to me how positive Mike was about Us, given his repeated insistence that for horror to work for him, there need to be well-defined rules. The Tethered are highly inconsistent with what they can and can’t do.
The frauds discuss it during this review. To paraphrase it very loosely - for a good horror movie you need established rules OR you need to be a parable of sorts, a well-delivered metaphor
To be fair, Conan gets millions of hits on his remotes and basically anything non-talkshow-related. I'm glad he cut his show down to focus more on those aspects.

Well I watched Paddleton, I don’t think I want to watch the movies you recommend anymore, that got too real.
I don't know exactly how much absolute control Peele had over the production, but the exposition monologue felt like something that producers demanded he put in. Personally, I would have been 100% fine with no explanation whatsoever; it's clearly more about the metaphor and the imagery than it is about the logic. But I also understand that even an incredibly effective, well-crafted movie will put general audiences off if it leaves large portions of its plot unexplained. Great movie, tho. You guys didn't talk about the music or the sound. That was something I noticed and really loved while watching it.
That does make sense, but who knows, maybe it was him that thought audiences would be confused or annoyed without it.
That's what killed it for me. It was a solid 4-star movie to me until the plot sucked me out of it. There's just too much that doesn't make any sense.
I would have loved for a lack of explanation like Jay mentioned with the ...of the Dead series or the Silent Hill games.
I can't honestly see the metaphor for class struggle in the film. The fact that there was no interaction or exploitation of the tethered makes the argument for class metaphor to be impossible.
Brian Holmes
There IS a lack of explanation. Yeah, she tells them what they are but that’s all you get. There’s way more they could have delved into and I’m glad they didn’t. I actually think Jordan Peele did this himself. I saw a lot of dumbasses on Facebook and whatnot who tried way to hard to create fake theories for Get Out and it ruined the movie for a lot of people and turned off some from watching it. He even said himself that people were over analyzing it. This was his way of circumventing that.
I really think _Us_ would've benefited from being more vague in its explanation or having a supernatural explanation that didn't beg so many questions. I know it doesn't bother everyone, but for me, the logical problems are almost all I can think of when I think about _Us._ I think it really hurts the rewatchability of the movie. It's harder to take the tension and danger of the earlier scenes as seriously when you know the explanation doesn't make any sense.
I'm also of the opinion that's Peele's films, ironically, appeal to an audience that doesn't actually watch horror movies.
I’m with you. Especially that last shot
*SPOILERS*
With the chain of people crossing mountains, I just threw my hands up. I guess they do have a copy of everyone on the planet. And they all got matching jumpsuits, gloves, and scissors. I also don’t totally understand the “shadow” thing. Like sometimes you can control your opposite with movements and other times they give no shits. They also lost me a bit with the main family’s copy being very dramatic with their sit down, while the other family just walks in and stabs them all.
I'd be genuinely interested in your opinion of the rewatchability after you've seen it more than once.
@@afriendinthevoid6522 SPOILERS
Also, one thing that annoyed me most was the lack of stakes. Like, after they don't kill the dad multiple times when he clearly should have died, you know that nobody is ever in any real danger. It made me think of A Quiet Place and how, despite my issues with that film, they establish real tension and stakes from the very beginning. I never felt worried for any of the main characters in this "horror" movie.
OriginalMasters Ah yes. Yeah that works with *SPOILERS* for the rest of my replies if any. Spoiler thread.
With the twist reveal in the end. And the rest of the family followed her lead with that since she was obviously the coordinator. Good point.

This is for Mike. I just recently watched US and finally was able to watch this episode and I have to say thank you so so much for Paddleton. I am a 48 year old male and this one got me. I didn't think it was going to hit me as hard as it did by the end based off of the first 15-20 minutes. Ramanos character was really bugging me at first, but by the end, I was crying like a baby. Love Jay’s Shaun of the Dead tribute pocket stain. “You’ve got red on you.”
I like that Mike is miming smoking a cigarette when he does his impressions.
"Ambitious but sloppy" is an accurate description of Us. Peele did a great job using the originality of the premise to pull off some thrilling and suspenseful scenes. However, I felt that the material got out of control. It is one thing to nick-pick logical gaps in the story, it is quite another to point out that these gaps meant it was difficult to follow the narrative. There were times in which I was unable to relate scenes to the wider story, lessening the emotional payoff. It's a shame, too; I really felt this could have been something special.

Agreed, they should have left things more vague, once they explained the tethered world, it drove me crazy thinking about it.
Same. I don't care if the movie is a giant metaphor. If you place it in the real world and keep it realistic the entire way through, don't bitch when people point out how the logistics of the plot make no sense at all.
Yes because it was dumb & iknow yt fanboys wont believe me but im 2for2 on calling the plots to jordans peeles films tho i do enjoy their "aesthetic"so i say hes over hyped & everyone licking ass.
I'd have appreciated it much more if they'd keep it more vague. I liked thinking that those red clones were our dark halves or something - that's why the white guys had to die. They were too far gone, too spoiled, rotten. But no! They're just fuckin clones who live underground. And it opens up itself for so many plot holes!
I don't care what the themes are if the film's bad at surface level. And this one is 3,maybe 4 out of 10.
@@The1RealDarek I would have preferred it if they were like from a shadow universe like how Hell is depicted as being our world but broken in the Constantine movie. Or if it wasn't explained at all.
But they got you to keep thinking of the movie, even now your probably trying to think of possibilities in it's universe.
Something to be said for that.
Weird, Paddleton was all over my Netflix main page (Netflix Portugal) for a good while. Also Ray made baaaaaank by voicing Manny the Mammoth from the Ice Age movies.

Hands Across America was the Ice Bucket Challenge of its day.
I'm the complete opposite, I enjoyed Us until the twists and turns started happening. I was perfectly happy with this being a story about bizarro people that have come to torment their mirror selves. Once the twists started happening and things actually started being explained it became borderline tardid for me. It also, deflates all tension for repeat viewings while an ominous group of dark doppelgangers would still be just as scary.
Mike looks more youthful than usual in this video 🤔 he must have started using moisturiser.
Finally got around to seeing Us, and the twist was so obvious I'm honestly wondering if it was even intended to surprise the audience at all. I called it as soon as the opening scene closed with the two girls in the mirror house.
