BWCA - Offgrid Grouse & Shed Hunting 16 Days

- This was a 16 day trip at the end of September. This is the second year my wife has allowed me to go hunting & fishing while on our anniversary! I know that I am a lucky guy. I thank God for all that I get to experience in life, especially while out here. My connection with him is so much closer due to the isolation from everyone & everything that modern day gives us. I workout year round so that not only can I get to these places but also so that when I do, I still have enough energy to enjoy it while there. Every year my trips get a little more brazen & I plan on pushing it until I am not able to anymore. Having only myself to rely on while on these trips, makes it all the more special. When problems arise, I look forward to sitting down to figure them out. One day I will write a book or two of all my wild & often humbling experiences.

Best content I’ve found so far on exploring the boundary waters
Thank you so much! I get better each trip at recording/editing. I have my best one coming out this Sunday. And 2 month trips this year that will be wild. Stay tuned;)
Awesome video my man
Thank you VERY much. Watch some of my other videos;) I plan on posting MANY more as the years pass
Being sunk from those farm animal sausages sounds so gnarly. Nice finds on those sheds; I found one snorkeling up there once. Keep up the good times.
Thanks
Bummer.. I would have loved to see a full video of your trip from EP 37 up to Malberg Lake. We have the same route planned for this August
Full video? Like me paddling the whole way? Haha. When I come home from trips like I just did last week, I have over 100 hours of footage. I try to cut down to 45 min.
Love to hear as much feedback on what people would like to see so I can learn how to make this channel grow
The algorithm sent me here. Love the videos man!!!
Thank you very much!
Great video! Few highlights I enjoyed the most:
1. "The ground is solid until it isn't." Pulls foot out of a mudhole.
2. Roman's (spelling?) maps! The antlers and big fish are right where he says - uncanny! I need a copy of the map because I haven't found the Adams Lake Volcano yet. :)
3. Bow hunting through the woods while packing a blue barrel - rugged!
4. Cool wolf howls and prints.
5. Making a ton of kindling!
6. Big fish!
7. Plenty of grouse.
Thanks for sharing! New sub here.
Thank you so much! If this page takes off, I'll be making 6+ trips/videos a year instead of 2 out there:)
If you have time, check out some of my older videos. I hope my editing capability has progressed well.
@@MichealGrabosch Pretty much seen all of your videos! Impressed with your fishing prowess and your bold ventures deep into the PMAs. I love the BWCA but probably won't experience it the way you do. :) Wishing you the best in attracting more views.
That was an awesome trip!!!
Thanks for film it for us!
Thank you
A perfect trip! You're using public land to the max, with valuable lessons for the rest of us. If you have a sec, your brand of overboots and hunting setup would be appreciated.
Thank you! Artic shield insulators I used to slip over my boots/sandals. Also, I used a packable longbow by S.a.s called atmos :)
I seem to get sick about half the time I go to the boundary waters. It's never been food poisoning, always sinus infections/throat shit. Oh well, I still like it up there even if I get sick. Me and my cousin went grouse hunting with a wrist rocket and managed to get one!
I was contemplating using one. They make some pretty good ones I've seen now at days. Sights and all!
Great adventure there! Fires outside of FS grates are no go, though.
I had a primitive permit that allows me to travel to remote and camp/set up a fire pit wherever you seem to be a good place for it
I've heard about the primitive area permits, but I didn't realize that also allowed one to make an open fire. Thanks!
Looks like you had a blast man 💯!
Always!
Those last two grouse were young spruce grouse they have dark almost purple meat very cool birds. Awesome trip fall in the BWCA is the best.
Agreed. No bugs and no people
Nice video! Awesome content. When we go to the boundary waters it sometimes feels like roughing it, but we bring in great food and haul in a lot of unnecessary comfort items, you're way more hardcore than us! Do you ever eat fish? I've seen you eat grouse, and you seem to be a "live off the land" type of guy so I'm surprised to not see you eating fish.
Thank you! I leave in 2 days for a 3+ week solo. I do eat fish a lot. But I have not gone into recording as much as I should if I want this channel to grow, I suppose. Thanks for the feedback. I plan each 3-4 week trip with negative 7 meals to haul (a week of fish spread out)
@MichealGrabosch awesome! I'm also going soon, June 5th-10th we'll be on the kawishiwi river maybe we'll see you passing by
6th- 9th I should be going from Alice lake into kawishi river and north through beaver/adams/boulder. If you see me, I'll give you some secrets of kawishi river that I know of.
Looks like you got a couple spruce grouse as well. I’ve always heard people call them stone hens, cause they hold so close you could theoretically nail them with a stone. I think they used to be illegal to hunt in MN, reasoning didn’t really make sense, but I guess they thought it was a good survival resource.
They hold very still. I was told by some grouse hunters that the further in bwca you go, the less they are scared of humans. Their main predator is wolves. So they are used to just flying up to a low branch and being 100 ok. Same tactics do not work well vs my bow;)
When we were kids we used to hunt grouse with wrist rockets and taconite pellets much easier than a bow and arrow.
I agree. I would have but wanted to hone in on my barebow skills for deer season the following month with it:)
@@MichealGrabosch makes perfect sense 👍
I LOVED this! I've been there... being sick in the backcountry for days at a time with a fever, or food poisoning. It's 100x harder to do anything. What an amazing trip!
Question: I see you have a Wenonah canoe. What model is it? I'm just starting to get into canoeing, and I plan to bring my 75 lb golden retriever with me. Just curious. Thanks!
Thank you again for sharing. This was an amazing trip. I can't wait to get up there this next spring.
Thank you so much for watching:) Check out some of my other videos if you get time:)
I use an Aurora wenonah canoe. It's very rare to find one. I have never seen another myself. If you see a used one ever = grab it! But you can order them new. Very pricey:/ best canoe, in my opinion, for everything. Speed, balance, turning, space, etc etc. It is originally a tandem canoe. I convert it into a solo when I am not with my wife out there.
Your pup would love this canoe
@@MichealGrabosch Thank you so much! This really helps. Yes - I was looking at purchasing one brand new. I'll keep an eye out for a used one, if possible. Thank you again! Yes, I will watch your catalog of videos. Again, much appreciated!
What canoe is this? Or does that canoe have its type category? A boundary waters trip has been on my bucket list but there’s no way I would be carrying my sit on top kayak around there so I’m shopping around I guess.
Great video by the way. It was shot very well.
Thank you very much. This is a pretty rare canoe to find up there. It's an Aurora by wenonah. If you're shopping around for one, all the outfitters sell their 2 yr old canoes in winter. $3500 canoes sold for 1200. Just have a lot of scratches on the bottom, but nothing that is bad.
I highly suggest next summer, going to Canoeacopia in winsconsin. They let you try out every type of canoe there is before you make a decision to buy.
If you get more free time, check out some of my other videos:)
I love your videos. You’re the only person I know that has videos going as deep into the BWCA PMA’s as you do. And the fact that it’s a cast and blast, even better! Living my dream life man. Sure wish I lived up there or could get up there each fall, Heaven on earth.
There’s a ton of sections on that trip too, you never showed. I know it’s hard to get it all. But man, so much content 😜
Mind if I ask which portage that was about fifteen minutes in? The long uphill one. If you don’t want to share publicly, I completely understand.
Thank you so much! My gosh, yes, there is so much I don't video! Let alone I think close to 100 hrs of footage compressed to 40min.
I live 9 hrs away, so each trip is a bit of travel for me. Do plan on living up there for a few years soon. Once I do, there will be a lot more content. The portage, I believe, is Mueller Lake. I rearranged a lot of the videos not in order, necessarily as I try not to make the video too boring at times
@@MichealGrabosch thank you, I’ll have to check out that portage at some point on a future trip. For some reason I always have to find a way to make my trip difficult or challenge myself a bit 🤣
Looking forward to many more hours of your vids.
got any Little Sag fishing tips or best campsites you feel comfortable sharing?
